CL heads to sectionals on winning note

WESTFIELD — The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds baseball squad closed off its regular season with a 5-4 non-league win over the Westfield Wolverines Friday.

CL got off to a 2-0 lead early. Devin Pope walked in the top of the first, Kyler Majka singled to move Pope to third base, then Bryce Rowe hit an RBI single. Nate Engdahl’s sacrifice fly later scored Majka.

The Thunderbirds increased their lead to 4-0 in the second inning with a two-out surge. Brendan Rowe walked, a Pope double scored him, then a Majka two-bagger scored Pope.

In the bottom of the second, Westfield got within 4-2. Luke Kawski was hit by a pitch, Nate Culbreth singled, then Mike Johnson knocked them both home with a double. The Wolverines added another run in the next inning, when Brad Babcock walked, went to second base on a fielder’s choice, moved to third on a Brady Nusom single and scored on a Kawski single.

The Thunderbirds got that run back in the fifth inning when Zach Fischer singled, moved to second on a balk, and scored on a Pope single.

Westfield closed the scoring in the bottom half of the fifth when Kawski hit a double and Hayden Backus smacked another double to score him.

Cody Triana got the win for Chautauqua Lake, pitching two innings and allowing two hits, one run and striking out one. Pope got the save.

Majka wound up 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while Pope was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Chautauqua Lake starts the playoffs today at home against Falconer. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. Westfield plays Frewsburg in the playoffs on Tuesday.
