FHS golf teams lose on rainy course

The Fredonia High School golf teams lost to Southwestern on Tuesday at Shorewood Country Club on a rain-soaked course.

The girls team lost 28.5 to 26.5, while Southwestern was victorious in the boys’ event, 33.5 to 21.5.

“It was a great, great match,” said Alex Conti, the Fredonia girls’ coach. “It really was, especially considering the conditions.”

GIRLS

Fredonia’s Ashley Holt and Southwestern’s Molly Gustafson were each named medalists on the day, with a round of 56 for each girl. Fredonia also had a 57 from Caroline Cameron and a 64 from Hannah Christy. Claire Marshall had a 73 for Fredonia, as well.

“I was really proud of the girls,” said Conti. “Those were not bad scores for them in these conditions.”

Fredonia is in action again today against Ellicottville, prior to sectionals next week.

BOYS

Southwestern’s Max Vaughn was the medalist with a 43, with teammate Jake Hnatyszyn just a stroke behind with a 44. Fredonia’s top golfer was Lucas Hoffman, who was third place with a 45. Drake Bell of Southwestern shot a 48, and Brady Fye of Southwestern and Owen Nicosia and Thomas Degenhardt of Fredonia all shot 49s.

The match concluded the regular season for Fredonia (12-4, 6-4). Southwestern clinched the Section VI Division 1 championship with the win. Fredonia coach Ross Conti explained that in a new format this year, Southwestern will play the two other divisonal winners in a 9-ball tourney today to determine what team will represent Section VI at the state championships.

“They normally wouldn’t let us even play on the course (due to the wet conditions), but they let us because we had to get on the course and finalize our season before the league tournament and determine the league winner. So that was good of them,” Ross Conti said of Shorewood’s management.
