Dunkirk Senior League

Pro-Bats Yankees 4, Stericycle Athletics 3

The (3-0) Yankees rode two Justyn Vara home runs (3-run and solo) as their only offense, to edge the (0-2) Athletics.

Vara started the scoring with a three-run shot in the first inning. Bob Bankoski’s A’s battled back with one run in the third inning and two in the fifth, to tie the game. Key hits by Gib Stuart, Byron Keyser, Zach Nykula and Kevin Silk led the comeback. Vara came to the plate to lead off the bottom of the sixth, hitting what turned out to be the winning homer.

Matt Eaker (four innings, no earned runs) and Vara combined to pitch the victory for the Bombers, fanning 14 batters and walking two. Nykula and Keyser pitched admirably for the A’s, allowing only six hits, with three walks and strikeouts.

Evan and Allan Carmello, Jason Howard and Stony Woodard had the other Yankee hits. Brandon Shelters and Trevor Spicer (double) had the other hits for the A’s. Stuart was outstanding at first base for the Athletics, turning in several sparkling plays.
