Falcons’ fun

Annual First Ward Falcon Club softball tourney starts today

The 43rd annual First Ward Falcon Club Men’s Fastpitch Tournament will begin tonight with two games at Promenschenkel Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with games continuing on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Promenschenkel Stadium and School No. 7.

The 43rd annual First Ward Falcon Club Men’s Fastpitch Tournament begins today with a couple of games at Promenschenkel Stadium at Wright Park beginning at 6 p.m. The tournament has been well known for getting teams from all over the area to participate, including Canadian teams. However, similar to last year, this tournament will not feature any teams from across the border.

The Canadian dollar as dropped to 76 cents compared to the US dollar, which makes it understandable as to why they continue to stay away from the tournament.

“The dollar is killing it,” said co-tournament director Tim Wdowiasz. “That’s why the Canadians won’t come down. Either way, it’s still going to be a lot of fun this weekend.”

Wdowiasz along with Matt Herdzik are once again co-directing this year’s tournament.

Wdowiasz mentioned that even though there won’t be full Canadian teams this year, there will still be plenty of talent, including players from Canada, Puerto Rico, Czechoslovakia, and the Dominican Republic as well as locals.

“I can already say the competition is going to be a step up from last year,” added Wdowiasz.

Last season’s winner, Erie Bud, returns to the competition once again as they will play their first game at 9 a.m. at School No. 7 against the IAC Braves on Saturday.

As for the local teams, they’ll kick off the tournament tonight at Promenschenkel Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Dunkirk Fastpitch I will face G&E Tents first, and at the conclusion of that game, Dunkirk Fastpitch II will play Dunkirk Lakeside Club.

The tournament will consist of 10 teams this year in the three day tournament, and it will feature the top eight teams competing on Sunday in a single-elimination tournament. The championship game is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
