Westfield stays alive

Win over East Greenbush keeps team in 8-10 softball state championship tourney

Stafford Immediately following the final out, Westfield coaches and players review the team’s 10-2 victory over East Greenbush in the state Little League 8-10 softball finals Thursday at Karnes Field in Dunkirk’s Wright Park. Westfield stayed in the tournament with the win and will play again today.

Westfield (1-1) stayed alive and eliminated East Greenbush (0-2), 10-2, as action continued Thursday at Joe Karnes Field in Dunkirk at the statewide Little League championship tournament for 8-10 softball.

Winning pitcher Eva Gnadzinski recorded 13 strikeouts and walked one. She also had one hit, one RBI, and scored two runs. Jillian Miller had RBI singles as part of Westfield’s four-run fourth inning and three-run fifth inning. Lucy Gates also had two hits. She also had an RBI.

Other key offensive players for Westfield were Madyson Burgess with an RBI double, Molly Burgess with an RBI and two runs scored, and Renee Shuster with two runs scored.

For East Greenbush, Sydney Rogers was 3 for 3 (all singles) and Sophia Galligan drove in both runs. Mya Parkinson was the losing pitcher.

Westfield advanced to a game against Montgomery (1-1) today at 2 p.m.

Great Kills 5, Montgomery 4

Montana DiCecco left the tying run stranded at first in the last of the sixth by inducing a game-ending flyout to centerfielder Madeline Lanza.

Great Kills (1-0) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning. Down 1-0, Julianna Blann delivered the tying run with a single. Rose Joseph’s two-run single through a drawn-in infield made it 3-1 before Great Kills added two unearned runs.

For Montgomery, Kayla Fenner had an RBI single in the second and an RBI groundout as part of a two-run fifth. Anna Ferraro led off the second and eventually scored the first run of the game. She also had a bunt single in the sixth which resulted in the last Montgomery run. Mackenzie Hinespeter added an RBI and Elinor O’Neill had a single which figured into the scoring.

DiCecco (six strikeouts) was the winning pitcher and Audrey Conklin took the loss. Great Kills advanced to today’s 5 p.m. winners’ bracket final against North Shore.

North Shore 13, Oneida 1

Leading the way for North Shore with two hits was Isabella Zager. Tori Trypaulk had a home run and Laney Vomerd and Megan Halloran both had singles. Olivia Miller had a triple for Oneida.

Ava Zicchinelli pitched a one hitter for the win and Olivia Miller took the loss for Oneida, which will now face Massapequa at 11 a.m. today.
