Auxiliary Post 2522 to host golf tourney
IRVING — The Pine Valley VFW Auxiliary Post 2522 is sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit Gold Star Mothers and homeless female veterans this Saturday at Rose Brook Golf Course in Irving. Auxiliary Senior Vice President Margaret Sheldon of Cherry Creek is looking forward to holding the tournament for the first time and hopes that it becomes an annual fundraiser.
“I don’t know anything about golf or tournaments,” Sheldon laughed, “but I thought it would be a great fundraiser! I brought it up at our VFW meeting, and they thought it would be good for us to do. We talked to Rose Brook, and they were just so thrilled and willing to help us.” Sheldon is happy that the tournament will benefit causes near and dear to the hearts of auxiliary members, as all are indebted to the service of female veterans, and there are so many Gold Star Mothers in the area and across the United States. Gold Star Mothers are those who have lost a child in service to our country and is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1928 by Grace Darling Seibold, whose son died in combat during World War I.
The tournament is a four-person scramble and is open to male and female golfers for $60 per person. All participants must be registered by noon and tee-off is at 1 p.m. The tournament includes prizes for men and women, a luncheon, 50-50 raffle and basket auctions.
The auxiliary is still seeking prize and basket donations and invites individuals or businesses to sponsor a hole. Basket donations can be dropped off at Rose Brook anytime this week. Participants can register on Saturday before the tournament or this week. Those wishing to register, sponsor a hole or donate prizes can do so by calling Sheldon’s daughter, Jill, auxiliary president, at 287-3126 or daughter, Karen, auxiliary secretary at 287-4497.
“If you don’t play golf, you’re still welcome to come and participate,” Sheldon said. For $6, anyone can enjoy the luncheon, which includes hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and more. Sheldon said non-golfers are also welcome to participate in the raffles and basket auctions. “We wanted to have the tournament in Irving so that it would be central for Buffalo and Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties,” Sheldon explained. “We’re excited and hope to have a great turn out — and the weather is looking good!”
Sheldon credits Gary Cerne, Rose Brook’s new owner, with helping the auxiliary host the tournament, especially since many members have never organized such an event before. The auxiliary is also grateful to Can Kings of Irving for supporting their cause. Can Kings will have their trailer at Rose Brook on Saturday to collected returnable cans and bottles and is donating all proceeds to the auxiliary’s fundraiser.
