Fredonia girls swimming wins

OBSERVER Staff Report

The Fredonia girls swim team got off to a great start to their season on Friday, defeating the Salamanca swim team by a score of 110-49.

Fredonia swept multiple events throughout the night, including the 200 meter freestyle, the 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

“We’ve never had a meet start before the start of the school year so I was nervous about that,” said Fredonia head coach Joanne Lotter. “But overall I was pleased with our times. We just needed to get our first meet going.”

Victoria Spacciapolli had a big night in the pool, winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:22.79 and also winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:45.22. Also winning for Fredonia was Jenna Sherlock in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:12.15 and Kaelyn Zebraski won the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.20.

“Vic had a great time in the 200 individual medley,” said Lotter. “She’s been training year round and I expect big things from her this season.”

Lotter also said Sherlock’s time in the 200 freestyle was a great time for the first meet of the season.

Lotter said she’s looking to “develop the depth of our team,” as multiple girls are swimming multiple events throughout the season.

Fredonia (1-0) will face Dunkirk on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Dunkirk.
