Thunderbirds come back to beat Black Knights, 20-8
OBSERVER Staff Report
WESTFIELD — The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield Thunderbirds football team came from behind to beat the Silver Creek/Forestville Black Knights on Friday, with a final score being 20-8.
The Black Knights came out and started with a strong first half, taking the early lead on a late second half drive where an Austin Rott 7-yard touchdown pass to Jack Brennan put Silver Creek/Forestville up 8-0.
“It was an evenly matched first half,” said Silver Creek/Forestville head coach Sean Helmer. “We were able to put a drive together at the end of the first half but not much happened after halftime.”
Getting into the second half, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield’s Ryan Jafarjian ran in an 8-yard touchdown to get the Thunderbirds on the board. A key conversion was made on the extra point when quarterback Kyler Majka found Zach Fischer to tie the game 8-8.
Majka would strike again when he found Blaine Thomas for a 25-yard touchdown to extend the Thunderbird lead. Jafarjian would score again in the last minute of the game from 5 yards out to make the final score 20-8.
“Our kids played pretty physical, which was good to see because we haven’t done that in a while,” said Helmer. “I was proud of their effort. Unfortunately, we just didn’t execute at times.”
With Akron defeating Gowanda/Pine Valley tonight, Silver Creek/Forestville will be left out of the playoffs, but will still have a week eight matchup after the seedings get sorted out.
Silver Creek/Forestville finished their regular season 2-5, beating Royalton-Hartland and Akron.
For Chautauqua Lake/Westfield they finish in fourth place in the Class C South, locking them in to play Class C North champion Cleveland Hill in the playoffs next week. The Thunderbirds won four games in the regular season, and will look to continue add on next week.
