Westfield/Brocton beats Frewsburg

FREWSBURG — The Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines did something they had never done before in the 13 years of direction by coach Neil Huber — they beat Frewsburg. Friday night, the Lady Wolverines came away with a 1-0 win in Frewsburg in a varsity girls soccer league contest.

“They played their hearts out,” said Coach Huber. “After a really tough week, they showed up today.”

Westfield/Brocton (6-7-1, 5-5-1) was tied at halftime after a scoreless first half, but the Wolverines wasted no time getting on the board in the second half. Juli Smith found the back of the net on an assist by McKayla Wolfe just two minutes into the second half.

From that point on, it was up to the Lady Wolverines’ defense to earn the win — and they did just that.

Angel Busch tallied 19 saves in the contest to earn the shutout. Westfield/Brocton’s defense forced Frewsburg to shoot from distance all game, which is customary from the Lady Wolverines from a strategic standpoint.

“The way my team plays defense, my girls keep everything in front of them,” said Huber. “We let them shoot from 20 yards and it worked for us. … My defense was spectacular today. My whole team was lights out today.”

Westfield/Brocton now returns home to host Cassadaga Valley on the athletic field at Westfield Academy on Wednesday at 6 p.m. during Homecoming Week in Westfield.
