LECOM Health Challenge benefits local education

JAMESTOWN — The Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC), the host organization of the Web.com Tour’s LECOM Health Challenge, has donated $100,000 of recent tournament proceeds. Funds will benefit Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (LECOM) Student Scholarship Fund, Jamestown Community College Student Scholarship Funds and Mikey’s Way.

“For the past three years, the LECOM Health Challenge has provided an important platform to showcase and celebrate all that Chautauqua County has to offer, from our diverse recreation to the strength of our community,” said George Borrello, Chautauqua County Executive, “and we’re thrilled the tournament continues to create opportunities to give back to some of the groups that help our region thrive.”

“We have the privilege of supporting the remarkable work done by organizations like LECOM, Jamestown Community College and Mikey’s Way through charitable funds generated by the success of our third LECOM Health Challenge,” said Mark Geise, tournament spokesperson and CEO of the CREDC. “From scholarships that help students pursue higher education to helping children with cancer stay connected to friends and family during treatment, we’re proud to donate to these worthy benefactors that provide important services in our community.”

In three years since the inaugural tee-off at Peek’n Peak, the LECOM Health Challenge has generated $305,000 in charitable donations.

“This donation is a testament to the incredible work done by the CREDC, PGA TOUR and the volunteers. The LECOM Health Challenge not only brings world-class golf to the region, but also highlights our school’s commitment to health and well-being in the communities it serves,” said John M. Ferretti, D.O., LECOM President and CEO. “The scholarship dollars will support LECOM students pursuing careers in fields such as osteopathic medicine, pharmacy and dentistry.”

LECOM, a private, non-profit graduate school based in Erie, Pennsylvania, is the title sponsor of the tournament and a national industry leader in health care education.

“Jamestown Community College provides a quality education at an affordable cost for students looking to begin or continue their education,” said Daniel DeMarte, president of Jamestown Community College. “One of our core values is a commitment to community partnership, and the tournament’s contributions are a demonstration of a shared dedication and responsibility to the economic, social, and cultural well-being of our community.”

“The continued support from the LECOM Health Challenge and CREDC has helped further our mission of providing technology to children battling cancer and other life-threatening illnesses,” said Les Friedman, president and CEO of Mikey’s Way Foundation.

“Donations like this make it possible to help them cope by connecting them with family and friends using Wi-Fi ready technology during emotional and physical hardships resulting from their treatment.”

The LECOM Health Challenge marked its third year at Peek’n Peak Resort’s Upper Course in 2018. The tournament week calendar was filled with activities including July 4th festivities, a Junior Clinic and a Pro-Am followed by four official rounds of competition where Nelson Ledesma claimed his first Web.com Tour win. The 2019 LECOM Health Challenge will tee off on Independence Day at Peek’n Peak, with tournament play July 4-7.
