JAMESTOWN — Senior Quinn Conlan was his usual dominant self inside for the Frewsburg Bears on Saturday afternoon at McElrath Gymnasium.

But head coach Tom Nelson needed contributions from other players to rally past Chautauqua Lake.

Dan Reinagel, Nolan Brink and Peyton Hayes were more than happy to oblige.

The trio combined for 27 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals as Frewsburg overcame a poor start to beat the Thunderbirds, 68-59, in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West action that was part of the United Way Showcase.

Reinagel, a 6-foot-1 senior, had a career-high 12 points and five rebounds.

“Danny played a really good game,” Nelson said. “That was the best I’ve seen him play. I think he was a difference maker.”

Brink, a 5-foot-10 senior, had a career-high 10 points, four rebounds and two assists while Hayes, a 6-foot junior, came of the bench to score 5 points and grab eight rebounds to go along with two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

“He defends and he anticipates rebounds well,” Nelson said of Hayes.

Conlan led the Bears (4-2, 2-1) with 24 points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots while junior Brad Nelson chipped in 12 points, five assists, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.

“He is deceivingly fast. … I don’t think there is a big man in the league that can stay with him,” Coach Nelson said of Conlan, ” … and he’s the reason we can play zone, because you know you have Quinn back there. Just his presence, he can block them or contest them.”

Junior Nate Adams had 13 points and seven rebounds while senior Zach Fischer also had 13 points for Chautauqua Lake (4-3, 0-3).

Frewsburg rallied from a halftime deficit with a 17-5 third quarter before holding on for the win down the stretch.

The Bears led by as many as 14 when Reinagel converted a three-point play with 4:47 remaining as Thunderbirds senior Bryan Anderson picked up his fifth foul. Chautauqua Lake sophomore Luke Waters cut the deficit to nine on a 3-pointer with 3:22 left and then to six on another shot from deep with 1:48 remaining.

Adams made it a four-point game on a bucket with 53.3 seconds left, but Thunderbirds senior Kyler Majka was called for his fifth foul on the ensuing possession and then assessed a technical foul, which ended up giving Frewsburg six free throws after a deliberate foul on the inbounds play. Brink and Nelson made three of the free throws and Chautauqua Lake missed 3-point attempts on its final three possessions to end it.

“That was an unfortunate circumstance,” Putney said of the technical.

The Thunderbirds, down several players due to disciplinary action to start the game, went up 12-1 in the opening four minutes in part thanks to 3-pointers from freshman Devin Putney and senior Trey Sauerland.

“Those guys work very hard in practice. … I was very happy with our start to the game. They came out and gave us a nice push until we got some of the other guys back in,” Putney said. “Unfortunately, it just didn’t seem like we had that chemistry down the road.”

Another 3-point from senior Anderson gave Chautauqua Lake a 15-1 lead before Nelson broke the Bears’ field-goal drought when he drained a 3-pointer with 2:05 left in the quarter. That shot sparked a 10-2 run to close the quarter that made it 17-11 in favor of the Thunderbirds after eight minutes.

Adams hit a pair of 3-pointers while Sauerland, Fischer and Majka also hit 3-pointers as Chautauqua Lake’s first 15 points of the second quarter came from beyond the arc. Frewsburg again closed the quarter strong, cutting a 12-point deficit to just six at halftime with a run that included putbacks from Hayes and Conlan.

“Nate has been battling some injuries,” Putney said of Adams. “Quinn being as powerful as he is … even on a healthy night he is very tough to play. He’s a phenomenal player.”

Brink hit a pair of 3-pointers and Reinagel also had 6 points during Frewsburg’s third quarter that turned the game around.

“We turned the ball over six times in the first couple of minutes. We weren’t getting shots … it was a bad start,” Nelson said. “That shows character to come back from that. We bounced back and didn’t hang our heads. I was proud of them.”

NOTES: Frewsburg was 24 of 42 from the foul line while Chautauqua Lake was just 10 of 14. … The Bears were 20 of 54 from the field, including 4 of 12 from 3-point range while the Thunderbirds were 19 of 69, including 11 of 31 from long range. … Frewsburg turned it over 18 times while Chautauqua Lake gave it away 15 times. … Anderson finished with nine points, five rebounds and four steals while Sauerland had eight points, six rebounds and three steals.
