The Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association (CCAA) has approved the inaugural Cheerleading Championship to be held on Thursday, Jan. 24, hosted by the cheerleaders at Dunkirk High School.

The event is open only to competitive high school varsity cheerleading teams within the Chautauqua and Cattaraugus county lines. The teams will perform their two minute and 30-second routines that consist of a cheer and music performance, which must include jumps, tumbling, dance, pyramid and stunting.

“We are very excited for this to be happening in our area,” said CCAA cheerleading chairman Tami Faraci. “Most counties have their own championship, so this is a big step in our area in the sport of cheerleading.”

Awards will be given to the top three in each division (Small Varsity; Large Varsity and Coed). There will also be one Grand Champion, which will go to the team that has the highest score out of all the divisions combined. Specialty awards such as best jumps, best tumbling, best stunts and choreography will also be presented.

“We hope we can make it bigger and better every year and get other teams in our area to become competitive and also represent the CCAA at the Section VI Sectionals,” said Faraci, noting the sectionals are held at Buffalo State College on Feb. 3.

Admission to watch the competition is $5 for ages 3 and up. The competition begins at 5:30 p.m. followed immediately by the awards presentation.
