Fredonia edges by Randolph, 67-63

The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies traveled to Randolph for a Section VI, non-league girls basketball game, at Randolph High School. The Lady ‘Billies held off a rallying Lady Cardinals, powered by Sydney Hvizdak, for a 67-63 win.

Despite leading for the majority of the game, Fredonia was never able to pull away from the Lady Cardinals, only maintaining a narrow lead right to the end. Randolph’s late push came up short when Fredonia made a trip to the free throw line and went 2-2.

The Lady ‘Billies were led by Kazlin Beers who scored 21 and had five steals to go along with four assists. Fredonia saw Anna Buchanan score seven and grab 11 rebounds, and Sydney Bigelow scored seven in the winning effort. Fredonia showed up big defensively as they grabbed 27 steals.

“It was one of our best played games of the year. Both teams played really hard,” said Fredonia head coach Mark Putney. “Our pressure defense did well. It was one of our better games at putting the pressure on. We came back after a tough loss to Olean the other night, a great non-league win.”

The Lady Cardinals effort was led by Hvizdak who scored 35 points while Savannah Rhodes scored 16.

“Savannah Rhodes ran the floor really well, she gave them a boost when they needed it.” said Coach Putney.

Randolph (2-6, 0-1) looks to turn their fortunes on Wednesday when they play host to Portville.

Fredonia (4-2, 0-1) will travel to Maple Grove on Monday as they look to get another win.
