Gernatt leads Panthers to win over Marauders

GOWANDA — The Gowanda Panthers were missing four of their 11 wrestlers on Wednesday, but were still able to come out on top against Dunkirk, 36-30, in a high school varsity wrestling match at Gowanda High School.

In a contest filled with forfeits and double-forfeits because of a lack of available competitors for both schools, the match came down to just two matches, at 182 pounds and at 195 pounds. After starting at 220, the final two matches were set up with Gowanda needing a win in just one of the two to come away with the win.

Ryan Gernatt of Gowanda came out on top in the match at 182, with a pin of Dunkirk’s Scott Karzenski at 1:29 to give the Panthers the victory, at home.

Dunkirk’s Owen Fred picked up a victory of his own in the final match on Wednesday, at 195 pounds by pinfall, just over a minute into the match.

Gowanda’s next match is next week, at home on Wednesday, against Southwestern. Dunkirk finishes off the league portion of the season at Fredonia next week, on Wednesday, as well.
