Fredonia earns opening round win over Depew

DEPEW — Another CCAA Div. 1 West school strikes again.

The Fredonia Hillbillies (13-8, 9-seed) used a 14-4 first quarter run to open their playoff run with an upset win over Depew (12-9, 8-seed) in a Class B1 prequarterfinal game on Wednesday, 51-43.

Fredonia grinded out themselves an 11 point lead at the break, then were able to get key buckets down the stretch to help preserve their lead through the end of the game.

“It felt like for a little bit we’d get a huge bucket then we’d come down and give up a wide open look to them,” said Fredonia head coach Nick Bertrando. “Defensively we did a really nice job securing rebounds and gave an overall concerted effort to get it done.”

Brayden Myers led Fredonia with a double-double, including 12 points and 11 rebounds while Alec Schrader added 10 points to help secure the victory.

As a team, the Hillbillies dished out 15 assists, displaying their ability to share the ball in order to get some easy buckets.

Sophomore Tyler Putney drilled two 3-pointers and senior Nate Shuart finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Matt Martin led the Wildcats with 18 points despite the loss.

The Hillbillies will move on to face the No. 1 seeded Medina Mustangs on Saturday at 1 p.m.

“They’re a tough team — they are the No. 1 seed for a reason,” said Bertrando. “They have really good size and aggressive guards who run the floor on offense.”
