Lady ‘Billies top Falconer, 17-5

OBSERVER Staff Report

FALCONER — The Fredonia Lady ‘Billies capped off their busy week with a big CCAA Division 1 West softball win, 17-5, over Falconer (5-5, 10-7), in a game at Falconer High School, on Saturday. Fredonia (8-2, 8-2) ran away with the game after a seven-run second inning, scoring all of their runs with two outs.

Maddy Marsh was in the circle for Fredonia and pitched all seven innings. Marsh gave up just three earned runs, on nine hits and no walks, while striking out one.

“Maddy did a real nice job in the circle today,” said Fredonia head coach Jesse Beers. “Falconer is a real good hitting team. We could see they were sitting on the fastballs, so we worked on the offspeed pitches.”

Along with the strong performance in the circle, the Lady ‘Billies offense provided more than enough run support for the win. After scoring two runs in the first inning, the Lady ‘Billies had a monstrous second inning — scoring seven runs, all with two outs. Caelin Holt led the way by going 2-for-3 with two doubles, including a bases clearing, three RBI double — Holt ended the day with four RBI. Grace Mrozcka went 3-for-5 with three RBI, Kelly Gullo added a 2-for-4 game with two RBI and Erin Schrantz went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“We were disciplined at the plate,” said Coach Beers. “Even if you make an out, just make quality at-bats. I think we did a really nice job today, we took 10 walks altogether. It’s nice to see offensively we’re hitting our stride, we’re priming up at the right time.”

Falconer went with three different pitchers in the loss, but it was Ashley Pierce who was dealt the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched.

Offensively for Falconer, Alex Rivera stood out in going 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Both Falconer and Fredonia are back in action against each other again on Monday, when the Lady ‘Billies play host to the Lady Falcons.
