NYC poised to reinstitute school zone speed camera program

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is poised to reactivate 140 speed cameras in school zones after city leaders and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo figured out a way to circumvent the state Legislature.
The program expired last month after the state Senate failed to pass legislation renewing the cameras.
On Monday, Cuomo used an emergency executive order to reactivate the devices for 30 days.
The City Council is expected to formally authorize the program on Wednesday so the cameras are operational when school begins next week.
Cuomo says he can continue to renew the cameras every 30 days but that it would be better if the Republican-led Senate reconvenes to pass a longer-term measure.
In his remarks, Cuomo thanked his frequent nemesis, Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, for his work on the issue.
