Oh, baby! Buffalo Zoo rhino pregnant, due in 2019
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Zoo says a new addition is coming to join its rhinos.
The zoo says Tashi, a greater one-horned rhinoceros, is pregnant and expected to give birth in the summer of 2019.
Tashi was artificially inseminated by Suru, who makes his home at Zoo Miami.
The zoo says it used the same procedure for a baby in 2014, and that rhino, Monica, now lives in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
The greater one-horned rhino was critically endangered and almost extinct until conservation efforts helped the population rebound to about 3,500 in India and Nepal. It is still considered vulnerable.
