Westfield/Mayville Rotary gets visitor

WESTFIELD – Newly installed Rotary District Governor Marlee Diehl visited the Westfield/Mayville Rotary Club recently and announced the club’s 2016-17 goal this year – “Rotary Serving Humanity.”

Two of her favorite undertakings during her visit were recognizing long-time members and exceptional associates of Rotary. Those who were “pinned” for their 50-plus years were Jim Mead, Steve Elliott and Jack Dean.

Noting that there always is an “unsung hero” in Rotary, Diehl recounted reasons why one member who joined in 1939 “served about everything. His efforts were steadily increased in this club.”

Among his contributions to Rotary, his 2010 visit – along with his wife Sue – to Niger was to observe the completion and dedication of water wells in 17 remote villages near the capital city of Niamey. Two of the wells were sponsored by the W/M Rotary Club through a district grant.

That man was Jim Wakeman, Rotary Club’s Foundation chair, who promotes giving to the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Program Fund.

Also recognized was Adele Harrington, who became an assistant representative to the district, having spent the 2015-16 year as president of the Westfield/Mayville club.

Diehl continued with a video-showing of her “hopes and dreams of what she would like to see happen in all district clubs during her tenure. We are going to grow,” she said, noting that the way to do that is for every Rotarian to invite a non-Rotarian to join a club.”

There will be a big party at headquarters Oct. 21 to 23 to celebrate 100 years of Rotary, she concluded, adding that a memory album of 100 special events is expected to also be a distinct District 7010 proof of activity.
