Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds monthly meeting

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Nov. 8, with 12 members present. President Bev Speelberg welcomed everyone and opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary preamble, a moment of silence for fallen soldiers, and in the absence of Chaplain Paula Pattison, an opening prayer was given by Pat Hayward.

No previous meeting minutes were available for this meeting. The treasurer’s report was given by Sue Degolier; accepted as read. Correspondence was read by Secretary Carol Baker. Bonnie Vari read a letter from the Batavia VA, thanking Unit 1280 for the purses filled with toiletries that the Unit donated to the Batavia facility. New member Lauren Sharp was introduced and welcomed into the Unit and to the meeting.

Children and Youth Chairperson Hayward reported that the children’s Halloween party was attended by over 50 children, plus parents. Everyone had a great time playing games, doing crafts, and of course, parading around in their costumes. The children’s Christmas party is set for Sunday, Dec. 18; more information will be offered soon.

For constitution and by-laws, Sally Lawson noted that she would update information and send it in concerning the monthly meeting time change to 6:30 p.m. and the 2018 dues increase to $25.

Membership chairperson Lawson reported that Unit 1280 is at about 50 percent membership for 2017. Unit 1280 members’ dues are $20. Mail them to Lawson, or stop by the Post and pay them. The hope is to get the Unit to 100 percent.

Under old business, the County Joint Legion, Auxiliary, Sons meeting that was at the Post on Oct. 28 went well, and the food the Unit prepared was much liked and appreciated by the group.

The annual “Vendor Showcase” and bake sale that was held Oct. 29 was a great success, with 22 different vendors selling their wares.

For “Make a Difference Day,” Oct. 29, Scout Pack & Troop 219 and Unit 1280 collected over 700 pounds of food plus monetary donations for the Cassadaga and Sinclairville food pantries.

Unit 1280 still has green light bulbs for sale at the bar for $3 each. Get them today and let the green lights shine through the night to show support for veterans everywhere!

For new business, Unit 1280, with the help of the Legionnaires and Sons, will be decorating the Post for the holidays on Sunday, Nov. 27, starting at noon. Everyone is encouraged to come help make the Post holiday festive and to bring a snack to share with everyone.

Unit 1280 will be ringing the Salvation Army bell at the Cassadaga Shur-Fine Dec. 9 and 10. If interested in helping with this worthy cause, the sign-up sheet is at the Post.

Unit 1280’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 13, at a new time: 6:30 p.m., at the Post. Plan to attend. Help is needed to further the Unit’s commitment to fulfill projects to benefit the American Legion and the veterans. New members and new ideas are always welcome! With no other business at hand, Hayward gave a closing prayer, and Speelberg adjourned the meeting at 8:15 p.m.

Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for its overseas families; “Labels for Education;” “Pennies for Hospice;” “can tabs” and “cancelled postage stamps.”  Unit 1280 also sells nice corn brooms for $10. Anyone interested may call the Post at 595-3145.
