Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds informal meetings

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary recently held two informal gatherings.

On Sunday, Nov. 27 Unit 1280, with the help of some of the Legionnaires and sons, decorated the Post for the holidays. Everyone brought a snack to share, after the work was completed. A short meeting was held to tie up some loose ends for a few of the upcoming events.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Unit 1280 met again for an informal meeting, snacks and conversation. President Bev Speelberg led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary preamble, and a prayer was given by Chaplain Paula Pattison. Homemade gifts made by Unit member Anna Lisa VanCuren were given to all members present.

The minutes from the two previous meetings were read by Secretary Carol Baker and both were accepted as read.

Linnea Nichols gave a report on the most recent meeting about the upcoming Cassadaga Community Winterfest, to be held the first weekend in February. Post 1280 will be hosting a “Cornhole Tournament;” and a dance is also planned. More details to follow as the event gets closer.

Charyle Tyler gathered items together for the veteran family; a mom and two children, which Unit 1280 “adopted” for Christmas.

It was noted that Unit member Sue Lehnen sent out Christmas packages to some local servicemen and women; a small gesture to let them know the members are thinking of them and appreciate their service to our country.

It was also noted that many members of Unit 1280 helped ring the Salvation Army bell at the Cassadaga Shur-Fine, Dec. 9 and10.

Carol Baker reminded members that Thursday night, Dec. 15 would be Unit 1280’s Empire Girl’s State selections; Baker signed up ladies to help her choose the young lady (and alternate) to represent Unit 1280 at SUNY Brockport next June.

There are still “Green Lights for Veterans” for sale. Get some today and let the green lights shine through the night to show support for veterans everywhere!

Unit 1280’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m, at the Post. Auxiliary members are asked to plan to attend. The unit needs everyone’s help to further the group’s commitment to fulfill projects to benefit the American Legion and the veterans.

New members and new ideas are always welcome!  With no other business at hand, the meeting was closed at 7:50 p.m.

Unit 1280 continues to collect coupons for overseas families; “Labels for Education;” “Pennies for Hospice;” “can tabs” and “cancelled postage stamps.” Unit 1280 also sells nice corn brooms for $10.
