Audubon to host First Friday Lunch Bunch

Jamestown – “Never Home Alone” will be the subject Tom Erlandson addresses at the First Friday Lunch Bunch at Audubon Community Nature Center, this Friday at 11 a.m.

There is a wide variety of life that tends to live alongside humans, from spiders and centipedes to smaller things that are rarely noticed. Discover what lives in your home, why they are there, and what services they may provide that you never realized you needed.

Based on the book “Never Home Alone: From Microbes to Millipedes, Camel Crickets, and Honeybees, the Natural History of Where We Live,” by Rob Dunn, Erlandson will explore the ecology of the home and discuss what animals live with us and why.

The retired Jamestown Community College biology professor observed, “Reviewers of Never Home Alone have suggested that after reading it ‘You’ll never take a shower again in the same way,’ and that it is an elegant argument why we all should ‘roll in the dirt, open the windows, get a dog, and change your showerhead, but do not kill your spiders.'”

A PowerPoint program will use examples from the book and from Erlandson’s own experience.

With an MS in Entomology and a PhD in Zoology, Erlandson taught at JCC for 27 years. Since retiring, he has written articles for Audubon Community Nature Center and Roger Tory Peterson Institute as well as co-authored “Figure 8 the Lake: A Driving Tour of Chautauqua Lake.” Erlandson was the administrator for the Ohio River Consortium for Research and Education and served as an environmental consultant for Forecon, Inc. Over the years he has shared his vast knowledge with the Audubon Community Nature Center through various presentations and workshops.

You are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and relax afterward in the company of the speaker and fellow participants.

The fee for attending is $8 or $6 for Nature Center members. Registrations are accepted online on the Programs page at audpage at auduboncnc.org through Thursday, Feb. 28. Walk-ins are welcome.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren. To learn more, call 569-2345 during business hours or visit the Programs page at auduboncnc.org.
