JAMESTOWN — Animal exhibitors at local county fairs, as well as the New York State Fair, are invited to come learn about New York State animal health and identification requirements for the upcoming year. The event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Frank Bratt Ag Center located at 3542 Turner Road in Jamestown.

Dr. Shannon Carpenter, the New York state veterinarian who is assigned to our local region, will be speaking on identification and health requirements for common species and the potential for required radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for cattle and swine.

New York State Agriculture and Markets regulates animal tracking as well as required testing that animals must receive before they can travel. This is monitored by the local state vet as animals arrive at local and state fairs. This information ensures that all animals are healthy and do not pose a risk to other animals, exhibitors, or fairgoers.

Anyone who exhibits animals at a New York county or state fair is encouraged to attend the meeting on Feb. 13. The meeting will be broken down into different species and exhibitors do not have to stay for the entire duration of the meeting. Swine will be covered first at 6:30 p.m. followed by sheep and goats at 6:55 p.m., cattle at 7:20 p.m., and horses, dogs, poultry, rabbits, and any other species at 7:45 p.m.
