Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary Post 1280 issues updates

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary Unit 1280 held its regular monthly meeting at the Legion Post on March 10 with five officers present and eight senior members.

President Lauren Sharp opened the meeting in regular fashion with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Preamble, & a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers. In the absence of Chaplain Paula Pattison, Sharp gave the opening prayer, and read the previous meeting minutes; a change was made, an award request that was sent to national was determined to be under Children & Youth, not Community Service. Treasurer Sue DeGolier gave the financial report; referred to the audit committee.

Reports by the committee chairs:

¯ 100th Anniversary Public Relations chairperson Ranee Kaus reported that posters are still hung up around the Post and she and other Unit members have posted notices on Facebook.

¯ Americanism: There was discussion that for Americanism, we could count the village American flags that are sponsored by Unit 1280 members. Kaus will go over the list and get a count.

In the absence of Pattison, Sharp said Pattison has sent out ‘Sympathy’ & ‘Get Well’ cards to Unit members. Unit member Lucile Marsh recently passed away; a luncheon was held for her family.

¯ Children & Youth chairperson Karen Ulrich reported that the children’s Easter party was scheduled for March 29th, but then canceled due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

¯ For Community Service Charyle Tyler made an American flag afghan and donated it to be raffled at the Jacob Johnson benefit that was held March 14.

¯ For education, Sharp reminded the members “Box Tops for Education” are now submitted with a phone app. Once downloaded into your phone, it is easy to use and you can send the points to the school of your choice.

¯ For Empire Girls State, chairperson Brandi Meacham, along with Sharp and unit member Stefanie Penhollow, interviewed junior Sarah Meder, and she was chosen as our 2020 representative. Her fees and tuition have been submitted to the county chairperson.

¯ The Juniors were given various craft items that they donated to the Sinclairville Free Library “Makers Space”.

¯ Membership for Unit 1280 is getting close to 100% for the year! Letters & Facebook messages have been sent out to our Units unpaid members encouraging them to get their dues paid soon. Dues can mailed to: Cassadaga Auxiliary Unit 1280/ PO Box 497 / Cassadaga, 14718.

On National Security Pat Hayward reported that we continue to cut & categorize “Troopons”. She did recently discover that they had been accepting expired coupons for 4 months, but the coupons should be no more than 2 months expired to be acceptable for our deployed Troops & families. Pat also did some research on what can be reported for National Security and found that blood donations, having a homecoming party/celebration for a Veteran, helping families that have a deployed family member, and doing POW-MIA ceremonies, are acceptable events, to name a few.

Hayward reported that she received a list of items that the Erie VA needs. Monetary donations can also be made & designated to specific departments. Pat also did some research and found Kevin’s Guest House in Buffalo. They will take lap blankets and more. On the order of the Ronald MacDonald House, Kevin Guest House was founded by Claudia and Cyril Garvey, whose son, Kevin Garvey, passed away in January 1972 at the age of 13 after an eighteen-month fight against leukemia.

During his treatment at Roswell Park Memorial Hospital, the Garveys became aware of many other families, traveling for the care of a child, that were unable to find affordable lodging. Shortly before Kevin’s death, Mr. and Mrs. Garvey purchased the property located at 782 Ellicott St. and with the help of Roswell Park, renovated the house with the support of volunteers and donations from the community. Kevin’s Guest House welcomed their first guest on July 26, 1972; just six months after Kevin lost his battle. The Kevin Guest House is the only option that welcomes families and patients of any age and for any type of treatment at all area hospitals including Roswell Park.

Scholarships are due in March; four ladies from our Unit attended the Department visitation at Post 62 in Dunkirk.

It also was noted that the April County Auxiliary meeting was canceled due to COVID-19

With no further business at hand, Sharp gave a closing prayer.
