Audubon has summer opportunities for area high school students

Audubon Community Nature Center has summer volunteer opportunities for high school–aged young people to share their love of the outdoors with children at day camps in July and August.

Every year Audubon Community Nature Center offers volunteer positions, such as counselor-in-training and junior counselor, that help high school-aged individuals discover and develop their passion for environmental education.

Those who are between 15 and 18 years of age old and want experience working with children in informal settings can apply. Applicants list which weeks they would like to volunteer, and Audubon officials try to match their preference. However, available slots are first-come, first-served.

Volunteers help counselors to teach nature-based lessons, supervise campers, maintain supplies, play games with campers and help set up and clean up the classrooms and activities. In return, they gain experience working with children of varying ages, develop responsibility, and learn soft skills that help lead to employment in the future. Many often go on to become Audubon Nature Education Interns.

Full details for the position and an application can be found at AudubonCNC.org/DayCamp. Anyone interested can contact Sarah Hatfield, ACNC education coordinator, with questions at 569-2345 or SHatfield@AudubonCNC.org.
