Bolshoi Ballet coming to Opera House screen

Submitted photo Spartacus will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fredonia Opera House.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present one of the world’s greatest ballet companies – the Bolshoi Ballet – dancing one of the staples of its repertoire, Spartacus on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be presented in high definition, captured live via satellite from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, as part of the Stage On Screen Series of programs.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “due to the continued high positivity rate of COVID in Chautauqua County, and in accordance with CDC and State guidelines, we are requiring all patrons to wear masks before, during and after Opera House events.”

In Imperial Rome, led by Crassus, Spartacus and his wife Phrygia are reduced to slavery and separated by slave dealers. His love for her and his desire for freedom lead him to revolt against the Roman army with the help of other captives. But the treacherous Aegina, who seeks to conquer Crassus and gain power, will get in the way of Spartacus’ plan.

Huge in scale and spectacular in effect, Spartacus is a tour de force of a ballet, set to Aram Khachaturian’s superb score. With an incredible display of might from the four leading dancers to the entire corps de ballet and its passionate pas de deux, Spartacus is the ultimate spectacle of virtuosity and lyricism born at the Bolshoi Theatre.

The ballet runs two hours, 50 minutes with two intermissions.

Individual tickets to Spartacus are $15, ($10 students). A special Stage on Screen Series flexible subscription of eight tickets that can be used however you want – one at a time to eight different Series events, all at once for eight people, or anything in between – is $116. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org
