Lighthouse sets

35th Memorial Day service

The Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum, will be celebrating its 35th annual Memorial Day Service on Monday. The service will be co-sponsored by The Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum and the Knights of Columbus. The service begins at 8:30 a.m. on the Lighthouse grounds, 1 Lighthouse Point Drive, Dunkirk. The flags will be flown in memory of former County Executive John “Jack” Glenzer, James J. “Turk” Murphy and Lawrence J. Haase Sr. The public is welcome to attend this ceremony.

Woman’s historical story

to be presented in Leon

LEON — The Leon Historical Society will present “Mary Jemison, White Woman of the Genesee” in the Leon Church at Route 62 at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

In the spring of 1755, 14-year-old Mary Jemison was captured by Shawnee Indians then later adopted by the Seneca and taken to the Genesee Valley of New York where she became fully adapted to the Seneca culture.

Leon Historical Society educator, Tina Scherman, will portray this remarkable woman and tell her story. A story that creates a historical and cultural perspective of the Senecas during a time period that includes both the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars.

FORESTVILLE — Forestville community yard sales will be June 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents may still sign up to participate at Evans Bank or Cave’s Market. List of sales locations will be available at Cave”s Market on the day of sales.

sewer district meets June 2

There will be a meeting of the board ofdirectors of the Portland Pomfret Dunkirk Sewer District on Thursday, June 2 at 3 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Town of Dunkirk meeting room at 3747 Willow Road. The meeting is open to the public.

Historic cemetery

tour set for Saturday

CHERRY CREEK — A historic cemetery tour in Cherry Creek will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Those attending should park at the gravel pit. A walking tour guide is provided.
