City Pier boxing event postponed

Youth boxing fans will have to wait a while for a Dunkirk Pier event.

The 2XL Showdown on the Pier, originally set for Saturday, June 10, “has been postponed to a future date due to lack of certified officials to oversee (the) event.” That’s according to an email sent out by Scott Mekus, city of Dunkirk events specialist.

The event was to be part of Dunkirk’s “Fired Up For Summer” June 8-10. The rest of the events planned are still on the schedule.

Poppy Day

proclaimed in city

City of Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas has proclaimed Friday as National Poppy Day. The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War 1 to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and represented the hope that none had died in vain. Dunkirk American Legion Auxiliary Unit 62 will have poppies available to purchase at various locations throughout the city from Friday to Sunday, and citizens are encouraged to donate to this most worthy cause and to wear a poppy to honor and remember the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Rosas urges “all residents and visitors to join in observing this day to honor every service member who has died in the name of liberty, freedom and democracy, while also showing their support for living veterans, servicemembers and their families.”
