The Big Read

This March and April, look for events promoting poetry old and new, as Chautauqua and Cattarau-gus counties participate in the Big Read of SUNY Fredonia featuring the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

This National Endow-ment for the Arts-sponsored program features a wide range of events inspired by Dickinson’s work, including poetry slams, discussions, children’s crafts and activities, a musical performance, and more.

One unique event, Echoes of Emily, is an original play written by SUNY Fredonia students, alumni and faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance. This creative collaboration is “filled with humor, tragedy and the questions we all face,” with a refreshing look at Dickinson’s timeless work from a contemporary perspective.

Recently Gabrielle Leo, a B.F.A. acting major portraying Dickinson in the show, got together with SUNY Fredonia’s President Horvath and Dr. Emily VanDette to share their excitement over the upcoming performance and events.

There are two chances to see this performance – one at SUNY Fredonia in McGinnies Hall on March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and another at the Reg Lenna Civic Center, 116 E. 3rd Street in Jamestown on April 3 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

A discussion of Dickinson’s life and work will follow the SUNY Fredonia performance, and both events are free and open to the public.
