Second season

WESTFIELD – A former train station will be open to the public for the second time as a newly renovated art gallery.

On Saturday, the Station Art Gallery in Westfield will open its doors to display the artwork of area resident Katherine Galbraith.

Galbraith – who was born in Memphis, Tennessee and spent much of her life in Atlanta, Georgia – is an award-winning artist who has made a name for herself through her various types of works, including: landscapes, plein air, portraits and her signature train paintings. Many of her landscapes and plein air pieces feature Chautauqua County hamlets and the surrounding countryside.

The Station Art Gallery is housed in the restored New York Central Passenger Railway Depot, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The property was later purchased in 1988 by Dr. Randall Swanson, a former Jamestown resident, who embarked upon a more than 20-year quest of restoring the building and its grounds to their former glory.

Galbraith and her husband, who is a Chautauqua County native, purchased the building from Swanson’s widow in November 2012 and subsequently opened the gallery in May of last year for its inaugural season.

“I’ve been an artist all my life, and I love being an artist,” Galbraith said. “I love painting and drawing, and I love trains; so it’s a good fit.”

A number of selections from Galbraith’s long and distinguished career are on display, and her more recent works from the past year are available for purchase.

“I’ve done quite a lot of new work recently, so the gallery features primarily new pieces,” she said, adding that only a select few paintings that went unsold last year will also be available for purchase.

The Station Art Gallery will officially open Saturday, and will remain open for the summer season through Labor Day. An opening gala will also be held Friday from 6-8 p.m.

The gallery is located at 11 English St. in Westfield. For more information, contact Katherine Galbraith at 770-366-1448, or visit www.thestationartgallery.com.
