Dr. Carrie Pawelski to conduct The Chautauqua Concert Band

JAMESTOWN – The Chautauqua Concert Band will be performing its 22nd annual concert at Jamestown High School, 350 E. Second St., on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. The concert will feature the music of Spain including “The Quest,” “Fuego del Alma,” “Andalusia,” “Amparito Roca,” “The Old Pirate’s Tale,” “Pirates of The Caribbean” and the “Man of La Mancha” under the baton of founder, John Cross.

Joining the Chautauqua Concert Band for the second half of the concert will be talented middle school musicians from 16 area schools. The seventh grade musicians under the direction of Robert Chagnon III will perform “Coronado,” “Los Braziles” and “Echoes of Spain.”

The eighth-grade musicians under the direction of Dr. Carrie Pawelski will perform “Capriccio Espagnol,” “El Spiritu de Valencia” and “Kingdom of The Sun and Moon.”

A native of Jamestown, Pawelski graduated from Jamestown High School in 1997. She completed her undergraduate music education and applied trombone degrees at the Eastman School of Music. She has collaborated with film score composer John Williams and pop star Bobby McFerrin.

Dr. Pawelski studied wind conducting with Dr. Paula Holcomb at SUNY Fredonia and after receiving her master’s degree and moved on to the doctoral wind conducting program with Professor Gary W. Hill at Arizona State University in Tempe. While at Arizona State, Dr. Pawelski researched and wrote about music education for social justice: music education being used as a catalyst for social change in local communities. Because of her research, she was named chair of the newly formed committee within the College Band Directors National Association, Music as a Social Force.

After receiving her doctorate from Arizona State, Pawelski was hired as Director of Bands at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark. At Henderson, she led all administrative aspects of the 180-member band program and also directed the summer series of Henderson Band Camps, which brought over 1,000 students and 40 directors to campus over a three-week period each summer. She directed the Wind Ensemble, Marching Band and Concert Band, taught courses in conducting, supervised student teachers and was responsible for auditioning and awarding scholarships to all incoming band members.

An advocate for new music, Dr. Pawelski took part in commissioning projects for new works by Brenda Kayne, David Maslanka and Frank Ticheli. She also helped host the 2015 Society for Composers, Inc. conference at Henderson State where her wind ensemble gave the world premieres of works by three young American composers.

Dr. Pawelski began her career as a trombonist at Jefferson Middle School and is so excited to be back home teaching in the district that raised her and in the music department that shaped her early life as a musician.
