Schubert Mass No. 2 performance slated for Sunday

The Hannah Hasbrouck Petersen Memorial Concert Series has announced an upcoming performance of Franz Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G Major, on Sunday evening, April 28 at 7 p.m.

This is the best known of Schubert’s three shorter Mass compositions, composed in 1815. This piece was originally scored more simply than his other Masses, requiring only string orchestra, organ, three soloists, and choir. Subsequent revised scores were more elaborate, including parts for woodwinds, brass, and timpani. However, this performance will adhere to the original score.

Soloists for Sunday’s performance will include Kim Mancino and Kate Huff, sopranos. Both are staff members of the Fredonia School of Music, and regular members of the Fredonia First UMC Chancel Choir. Tenor soloist Stephen Maynard is a graduate of Fredonia School of Music, and bass soloist Jason Rober is currently a student there.

Accompanying instrumentalists are members of WNYCO, and organist Barb Faxlanger, longtime organist and choir accompanist at the Fredonia First FUMC.

This concert will be directed by Dr. Vernon Huff, Coordinator of Choral Ensembles and Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at Fredonia School of Music, and beloved choir director of the Chancel Choir of Fredonia First United Methodist Church.

As always, the HHP Concert Series is free and welcomes all. Donations are always gratefully accepted.

The Fredonia First United Methodist Church is located at 25 Church St. in Fredonia, and is handicapped accessible.
