Opera House to host BBQ, bake sale, basket auction fundraiser

New will be entertainment provided by Chautauqua Brass, a Fredonia-based brass ensemble. The group will perform, weather permitting, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will hold a chicken BBQ fund-raiser on Sat., June 1, in Fredonia’s West Barker Common near the Gazebo. A Bake Sale and Basket Auction also will be a part of the event. All proceeds benefit the Opera House’s 24th annual Bach & Beyond Baroque Music Festival.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis says that the event is the fifth Bach BBQ event in as many years. “For something a little different, our BBQ will have a Spanish flair this year,” he says.

BBQ by Hector Alverio will provide the food for the event. Each meal includes a half chicken with blackened mole BBQ sauce, Spanish rice, green beans and a roll with butter. BBQ tickets are $11 in advance and can be purchased from Opera House Board and staff members, at the Opera House Box Office and online at www.fredopera.org. They also will be available for purchase in the park on the day of the BBQ at a cost of $12.

A variety of delicious baked goods also will be for sale at the June 1 event. And 10 baskets containing a variety of goods and services will be raffled off using a Basket Auction format. Examples of items in the baskets include: a stove-top popcorn popper with movie-themed items and Family Video gift card; a leather planner and dichroic art glass paperweight; a pair of framed Amish-themed watercolor prints; a collection of cheese knives and serving board with a bottle of wine and gift certificate to Reverie Creamery; an original watercolor painting by Vermont artist Gary Eckhart; a 58-piece collection of glass Christmas ornaments and matching tree skirt; and a Botswana agate stone necklace handcrafted by Erika Lynden of Moonstruck Designs, among others. For a $10 donation, supporters receive 26 tickets they can put into the basket raffles. Businesses/organizations donating baskets include Feather Your Nest Interior Design, Moonstruck Designs and Moosewalk Studio & Gallery.

West Virginia-based violinist Jennifer Wood is one of the outstanding musicians who come from throughout the continent to perform in the Opera House’s annual Bach & Beyond Baroque Music Festival.
