‘Little Women’ set for Opera House screenings

Submitted Photo The Fredonia Opera House is screening “Little Women” Saturday and Tuesday.

The next feature film in the Fredonia Opera House Cinema Series is Greta Gerwig’s interpretation of the classic American novel, “Little Women,” starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothie Chalamet and featuring Meryl Streep. It will be screened on Saturday, Feb. 8, and Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

“Little Women” draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March (Ronan), reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In writer-director Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms — is both timeless and timely.

Chris Hewitt, in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, calls the film “lovable, kind and funny … a movie you want to hug.” Christy Lemire, on NPR, calls it “an absolutely lovely film that will make you feel so extremely good walking out of it.” A.O. Scott, in the New York Times, calls it “a story that feels at once entirely true to its 19th-century origins and utterly modern.” Brian Truitt, in USA Today, calls it “a tremendously resonant, sometimes heartbreaking and always entertaining hoot.” Rated PG (for thematic elements and brief smoking, “Little Women” runs two hours, 15 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org. For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716-679-1891.
