The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will present one of the world’s greatest ballet companies — the Bolshoi Ballet — performing “Giselle” on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. It will be presented in high definition, captured live via satellite from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, as part of the Stage On Screen Series of programs.

The ghost-filled ballet tells the tragic, romantic story of a beautiful young peasant girl, Giselle, who falls for the flirtations of the deceitful and disguised nobleman Albrecht. When the ruse is revealed, the fragile Giselle dies of heartbreak, and Albrecht must face the otherworldly consequences of his careless seduction.

Upon her death, Giselle, against her will, joins the Wilis, the spirits of maidens who died after being betrayed by their lovers, and who take revenge in the night by dancing men to death by exhaustion. Led by Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, they summon Giselle from her grave and target her lover for her death, but Giselle’s great love frees him from their grasp. And in saving Albrecht from the Wilis, Giselle also saves herself from becoming one of them.

In this brand new production of “Giselle,” world renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky brings a fresh perspective to one of the oldest and greatest works of classical dance, giving the audience an opportunity to discover this iconic ballet anew.

Individual tickets to “Giselle” are $15, ($10 students). A special Stage on Screen Series flexible subscription of eight tickets that can be used however you want — one at a time to eight different Series events, all at once for eight people, or anything in between — is $116.
