Audubon part of July 29 to 30 nature festival at Panama Rocks

PANAMA — With the opportunity to celebrate nature and all things inspired by it, plus fun and activities for all ages, the staff and volunteers at Audubon Community Nature Center are looking forward to being part of the inaugural Wild America Nature Festival.

The two-day event on Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30, is hosted by Jamestown’s Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) and Panama Rocks Scenic Park. Panama Rocks is the amazing natural wonder where Wild America is being held.

The Festival will feature wild animals, a juried fine nature art and craft show and competition, a local food cook-off competition and farmers market, and classes, workshops, music, and talks by well-known speakers and artists. It is planned to raise awareness of nature and the environment, encourage sustainable enjoyment of the environment, promote conservation of our natural world, and have fun celebrating Wild America.

All are invited to visit Audubon’s booth to explore natural artifacts, learn about the fun patch for Scouts and other youth, and chat with Audubon volunteers.

Among the fun and learning experiences Audubon Community Nature Center will be offering are:

Nature Hike Fun Patch: Complete a selection of activities to earn the right to buy this classy patch ($3; check or exact change appreciated).

Forest Talk, 10 a.m. to noon both days: Meet retired Jamestown Community College (JCC) biology professor Dan Anderson along the trails to learn about some of the trees at Panama Rocks.

Rock Talk, 10 a.m. to noon both days: Find retired JCC biology professor Tom Erlandson on the trails where he will teach about the geology of Panama Rocks.

Touch a Turtle: Lincoln, Audubon’s captive-bred hybrid box turtle, had such a fun time at Panama Rocks last year, he can’t wait to return.

Nature Touch Table: furs, bones, rocks, antlers, and more will be out for visual and tactile discovery.

Festival hours on Saturday are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission each day is $10 for ages 13 and up, $5 ages 6 to 12, and free for 5 and under.
