Jamestown Community College students Kendyl Austin of Lakewood and JoElla Lane of Dunkirk were among 210 State University of New York students honored recently with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence for their academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

“This year’s award recipients emerged from their campuses as the top scholars, athletes, performers, and achievers, as well as a tremendous source of inspiration,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. “These students made the choice to be leaders on their campuses, prioritize their studies, and serve their communities.”

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

Austin, who graduates with an Associate in Science in individual studies, was captain of the two-time regional champion women’s volleyball team that competed at the national level two consecutive years. She received multiple athletics honors and served as president of the Jayhawks Athletic Association.

Austin is an active volunteer on campus and in the community. She served on JCC’s Student Senate and Club Council and assisted with the coordination of various student life and athletics programs.

Lane, who attended classes at JCC’s Jamestown Campus and North County Center, graduates with an Associate in Science in liberal arts and sciences: mathematics and science. A recipient of the Vera Varmee Pre-professional Health Scholarship, Lane founded the Health and Wellness Club at JCC’s North County Center.

Lane, a Phi Theta Kappa member and student tutor, attained dean’s list status for six consecutive semesters. She has also been active in community service.
