BRANT – A 20-year-old Tonawanda man is dead and another has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI after a Friday evening crash involving an intoxicated driver in the town of Brant.

According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, around 6:30 p.m., Robert Mooney, 20, of Kenmore, was traveling eastbound on Erie Road in an SUV. Mooney lost control of his vehicle, causing it to flip several times.

His passenger, Joseph Cavalleri, of Tonawanda, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Mooney was transported by Mercy Flight to the Erie County Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. He was charged by the Brant Police Department.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Cherry Creek man accused of BAC three times legal limit

ELLICOTT – On Wednesday, Frank Cartalano, 57, of Crestview Drive in Cherry Creek was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a class E felony.

Cartalano was stopped by a state trooper from Jamestown for reportedly moving from a lane unsafely on Route 60. He reportedly failed field sobriety tests. He was transported to state police barracks in Jamestown where he provided a breath sample that was reported as .24 percent, three times the legal limit.

Cartalano was released with traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Ellicott Town Court on June 26.
