Salamanca man dies in crash

NEW ALBION – A 42-year-old Salamanca man died Friday night after he lost control of his vehicle on state Route 353.

Cattaraugus County sheriff’s deputies say James E. Brown of 20 Orchard St. was driving south shortly before 7:30 p.m. when his vehicle crossed over the center of the road, almost striking an oncoming vehicle head-on before driving off the right side of the highway and striking two trees. The impact cut the vehicle into two pieces. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Brown was transported to Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving by ambulance where he was pronounced dead. An investigation is continuing. Cattaraugus Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office

SHERMAN – Janet M. Mitchell, 52, of Sherman was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, failure to signal a turn and moving from lane unsafely on Tuesday. Mitchell was stopped on Hart Street for allegedly violating a vehicle and traffic law at 9:12 p.m. She was allegedly found to be intoxicated during the traffic stop. She will appear in Sherman Town Court at a later date.

LAKEWOOD – Joshua D. Vanord, 19, of Jamestown was charged with failure to keep right and fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana on Thursday. Vanord was stopped on Fairmont Avenue for an alleged traffic violation at 10:49 p.m. He was allegedly found to be in possession of a quantity of marijuana. Vanord will appear in Busti Town Court at a later date.

BROCTON – Raymond L. Dotson, 44, of Portland was charged with failure to appear on a warrant on Friday. Dotson allegedly failed to appear in Portland Town Court for a previous DWI charge. He was arraigned in Portland Town Court and sent to the Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of bail.

PERRYSBURG – Donald J. Pfaffenbach, 32, of County Line Road was taken into custody on an arrest warrant from the Cherry Creek Town Court. Pfaffenbach was then turned over to the New York State Police.

Westfield Police Department

Connor M. McGrorey, 21, of Erie, Pa., was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana on Nov. 6. McGrorey was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for speeding on West Main Street and he was allegedly found to be in possession of a large quantity of marijuana and cash. He was arraigned in Westfield Village Court and released on his own recognizance to appear in court at a later date. Additional charges are pending.

Robert E. Honaker, 28, of Dunkirk was charged with having inadequate headlights on Nov. 8. Police stopped Honaker’s vehicle for an alleged traffic violation on North Portage Street. During the stop, it is alleged passengers Sebastian L. Hazelton, 22, and Erika J. Furman, 22, both of Brocton were in possession of marijuana. Both were charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. All were released on appearance tickets for Westfield Village Court.

Jason M. Tomkiewicz, 37, of Fredonia was charged with felony driving while intoxicated, crossing hazard markings and failure to keep right on Nov. 9. Tomkiewicz’s vehicle was stopped on East Main Street for alleged traffic violations. During the traffic stop, Tomkiewicz was allegedly found to be intoxicated, and he had previously been convicted of DWI making this charge a felony. He was arraigned in Westfield Village Court and sent to the Chautauqua County Jail in lieu of bail.
