Jamestown teen charged after burglary, fighting police

OBSERVER Staff Report

KIANTONE – A 19-year-old Jamestown teenager has been handed multiple charges after police say he was caught in the process of burglarizing a house in the town of Kiantone Saturday morning, and then fought with police afterward.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, around 2:30 a.m., a resident on Busti-Stillwater Road was awoken and found an intruder in his home.

The subject, who was later identified as Steven Schrecengost, allegedly refused to obey orders from the resident to leave until it was made known that police were on their way.

Deputies located footprints leading away from the residence, so a K-9 unit responded to assist with tracking down Schrec-engost, who was allegedly located at a residence on Norby Road. He was discovered in a shed he had forced his way into.

The suspect reportedly fought with police and kicked the K-9 in the nose. The dog responded to the attack by biting the suspect, thus ending his actions.

Once Schrecengost was placed in a police vehicle, he allegedly began kicking the car door, causing damage. He was subsequently restrained further and transported to WCA Hospital in Jamestown for evaluation.

Schrecengost was handed over to the Jamestown Police Department on existing warrants they held for him.

Deputies filed charges in Kiantone Town Court for one count of second-degree and one count of third-degree burglary, two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal trespass, two counts of obstructing a governmental administration and resisting arrest.

Deputies were assisted by the Lakewood-Busti Police, New York State Police, Carroll Police and the Kiantone Fire Department.
