City pursuit leads to charges

A vehicle pursuit earlier this month led to charges for two individuals in the city on Dunkirk.

City of Dunkirk police officers reported Friday they observed a dirt bike with no lights on traveling on Lake Shore Drive East around 1:10 a.m. June 14. Officers attempted to stop the dirt bike which failed to comply, leading officers on a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit the dirt bike accelerated to a high rate of speed and due to the increasing erratic operation of the operator the pursuit was terminated.

A short time later, the bike was located on the train tracks near Middle Road again leading officers on a pursuit.

After losing sight a perimeter was established and officers located the subjects after they abandoned the bike. The operator was detained while the other subject he was with fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after.

The subject who fled on foot was identified as Joshua Heimerel, 25, of Angola. He was determined to have an outstanding warrant through the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and was turned over to that agency. The operator of the dirt bike was identified as Dakota S. Sugg, 27, of Dunkirk.

After an investigation, the dirt bike was determined to have been stolen from a residence in the town of Sheridan earlier in the night during a burglary.

Sugg was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, reckless driving, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and several vehicle and traffic law infractions.

Sugg and Heimerel were also facing additional charges through Sheriff’s Department for the alleged burglary that occurred.
