LERHSNY adds general surgeon to staff

Officials at Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York are announcing the addition of board-certified general surgeon Rabie N. Stephan, MD, FACS, to its active medical staff.

The newest medical staff member will provide services at Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving and Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. J. Gary Rhodes, LERHSNY interim chief executive officer, said the addition of Dr. Stephan to the staff is an important key in the future plans for the organization.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Dr. Stephan’s qualifications join the health care system at such a critical time in our history,” Rhodes said. “The range of experience that Dr. Stephan brings to our region is a key ingredient in ensuring the continuing growth of our health care system, as well as enhancing quality services for our patients.”

Dr. Stephan is accepting new patients at his offices located at 268 W. Main St., Suite 3, Fredonia and the Medical Office Building, Suite 5, 849 Routes 5 & 20, Irving. Patients should contact their physicians for referrals for appointments with Dr. Stephan, or call 672-4040 for more information.

Dr. Stephan obtained his medical degree at the University of Bonn, School of Medicine, Bonn, Germany. He completed residencies in General Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn., and at the SUNY Buffalo. Dr. Stephan was also a fellow in transplantation surgery at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pa. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in surgery and critical care.

Most recently, Dr. Stephan served on the medical staff at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia and at Rochester General Hospital, Rochester. He has served in the surgical intensive care unit at Kaleida Health/Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo and as surgical director, division of transplantation, Kaleida Health, Buffalo. Dr. Stephan’s professional experience also includes renal transplant surgery at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo and at North Shore University Hospital, Manhassett, Long Island. He has also served as assistant professor of surgery at the SUNY Buffalo.

He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Transplant Physicians and American Society of Transplant Surgery. Dr. Stephan has authored and published numerous surgical articles and has made presentations at meetings including those held at Yale University School of Medicine, the American College of Surgeons in Chicago, Ill., and the annual meeting of the Society of University Surgeons in Richmond, Va.
