Community Relations Director Roxanne Wendling said, “Race to a Furever Home provides a timely theme and provides an interactive way for our Facebook followers to help the dogs get adopted. We have found that our Facebook group gets very excited and offers great support when we announce pet adoptions on our site and we are hoping they get involved and participate in the action all week. The Pittie Party gives a fun focus on a breed that can be more challenging to find permanent homes for because they are often misunderstood. We are also trying to increase awareness about our ongoing “Fix-a-Bull Program” which provides free spay/neuter surgery to any pit bull or pit mix dog from the 14701 zip code area.”

Public invited to Open House at Camp Gross Sunday afternoon

Camp Gross will hold an Open House Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Everyone is invited to explore and appreciate the site as an opportunity to see what the facility holds for youth organizations.

Many people think that Camp Gross is just for Scouts. It did start out as a Boy Scout Camp in 1929 when Mr. Gross gave part of the camp property to the Lake Shore Council Boy Scouts of America with a provision that if the BSA no longer wanted the property it was to go to the boys and girls of Chautauqua County. Later, in the mid 1930s, Ann Miller’s family also gave land to the camp.

In 1987, the Boy Scout Council decided it could not afford the upkeep of the camp. A not-for-profit 501(c) (3) Corporation was set up by interested men and women. Most notably Ed Hamlet was the driving force of the organization that has preserved and improved the site. There is now a heated bath house, flush toilets and hot showers. The cabins have been modernized.

Camp Gross is part of Chautauqua County’s charm. For the camp to grow and prosper, support is needed from the community. This open house will showcase the camp. Tours will be given and there will be a silent auction and bake sale. If you would like to volunteer to help with the open house, or like to donate baked goods or prizes for the silent auction, call Marie Tomlinson at 679-7145 or email her at MCJTomlinson@hotmail.com.

Free rabies clinic Saturday in Poland

The Chautauqua County Department of Health announces that a free rabies vaccination clinic will be held on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Town of Poland Highway Building, Grubb Hill Road, Kennedy.

Dr. Mary Fales is the attending veterinarian.

Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older.

All pets must be on a leash or in a cage, and you should bring rabies vaccination records for each animal receiving a shot. It is helpful for the veterinarian to know the previous immunization status of each animal to ensure proper and effective vaccination.

New York State Public Health Law requires each dog, cat and domesticated ferret over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies.

For more information on the clinic and rabies in general, see the Health Department’s website at: www.myhealthycounty.comor contact the Health Department at 753-4481.
