programs to appear

on Access Channel 5

“Who is Doing What” is the title of a television program filmed recently at the Prendergast Library in Jamestown. The program is a forum of groups working to improve Chautauqua Lake and its watershed. It will air from Saturday to Tuesday in two parts. Part one will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. with Part 2 showing at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.. The program was taped by Jeff Zook.

Another lake quality program, “Need to Upgrade Wastewater Treatment Facility” will air during the same week at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. This program features Tom Cherry, director of the Chautauqua Utility District, who gave a presentation to the Chautauqua Home-owners Association. The program was taped by John Viehe.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television that has been recently autoscanned.

Silver Creek to hold yard sale day Saturday

The Hanover Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Silver Creek and 14136 Yard Sales Saturday throughout the Silver Creek area from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maps to the sales will be available in the park and at 29 Oak St.

Sales will be held rain or shine, and prices will be reduced for the last two hours of the sales.

First Friday to be held in Westfield Friday

The Westfield-Barcelona Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring First Friday on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., which will be held on Route 20 in front of the shops on Main Street.

Many businesses will be open late. There will be shopping, food, music, art and vendors set up along the sidewalk.

MaryAnn Spanos

to appear on Senior Report Saturday

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have MaryAnn Spanos as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Dr. Spanos is director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995.

The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cas-sadaga, Chautauqua, Fre-donia, Mayville, North Har-mony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forest-ville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville.

National Marina Scout Lake Day Saturday

The National Marina Scout Lake Day celebration will be held Saturday at the Chautauqua Marina. The event is hosted by the Mayville Cub Scout Pack 126. A free youth fishing contest will start at 10:30 a.m. with 10 a.m. for children aged 3-12. The marina will supply the bait and it’s limited to 50 participants. Lunch and awards will be at noon. A demonstration on how to tie a fly knot will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. presented by Ted Pappas and Nancy Kadunce of Craftsmen of Fishinfeather. A free musky fishing seminar will be presented by Mike Sperry at 1 p.m. and is limited to 50 participants. Registration is required for the seminar and the youth fishing contest. Email boatsafety@aol.com or call the marina at 753-3913. Free safe boat checks will also be provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary throughout the day.

This day will also be the last safe boating class of the season. The class will be held Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required and the event is limited to 60 participants. The cost is $39 plus a $5 material fee. All events will be held at the marina, 104 W. Lake Road, Mayville.

Gas unchanged

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.83/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 19.0 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 18.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 14.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 15.0 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on it’ campus at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as GED classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in Certified Nurse Aide, Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing and Electrical are available as well as the Advanced Training for Licensed Practical Nurse.

The Academy will accept young adults, age16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Applicants can apply for on-center living or off center living, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

There is still time to register for Fall Youth Soccer in Westfield. Application forms can be picked up at the Eason Hall, Village of Westfield window. The fee is $20 for the first child, $15 for the second and $10 for the third (max. of $45 per family), but scholarships are available. Games will begin mid-August and end mid-October. Trip to the WWII Reenactment at Conneaut, Ohio

Join the Westfield Rec-reation Department for the largest D-Day Conneaut ever. With nearly 800 re-enactors from all over the U.S. and Canada it has become one of the largest WWII re-enactment in the country.

Brocton seeking

homeowners interested in repair program

The Village of Brocton is applying for Community Development Block Grant funds through the New York State Office of Community Renewal to assist low- and moderate-income homeowners in the Village of Brocton with home repairs.

Using CDBG funds, the village provides grants to eligible homeowners for necessary repairs such as roofs, windows, furnaces, insulation, electrical upgrades, etc.

The village is looking for homeowners who would be interested in participating. To be eligible, you must be a homeowner in the village of Brocton, be current on your property taxes and be low to moderate income. The maximum income for a household of one is $32,350, for a household of two is $36,950, for a household of three is $41,550 and for a household of four is $46,150. Income limits continue to increase as household size increases. Rental properties will not be eligible for assistance.

30th Annual Tour of Chautauqua Bike Ride

The 30th annual Tour of Chautauqua Bike Ride will be held on Aug. 10, originating and finishing in front of the Eason Hall, 23 Elm St. Westfield. The mass start begins at 9 a.m. Water and refreshment stops and sag wagon services are provided. Helmets are required. Recreational tours of courses of 25, 40, 62, 75 and 100 miles are offered, with a meal at the finish. Entries postmarked by July 19 are $18 and include a T-shirt. Entries for the ride are $20 and include a Tour of Chautauqua water bottle. Call 326-4243 for more information.

The village of South Dayton will host a 30th anniversary in honor of the film “The Natural.” Vendors and antique cars from prior to the 1940s are being sought for the event which will be held Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 at the South Dayton Village Park. Road closed

The City of Dunkirk Department of Public Works is advising motorists that the contractor working on the west end waterline project will have Brigham Road closed from Lake Shore Drive West to West Second Street today and Tuesday.

Perrysburg Town Clerk Tamara A. Utley announces that her office is an E-ZPass retail location. E-ZPass is an Electronic Toll Collect-ion that prepayment of tolls. An E-ZPass tag can be purchased for $25 at the Perrysburg Town Hall, 10460 Peck Hill Road. The tag is active for immediate use.

With the E-ZPass tag, users receive a 5 percent savings on Thruway tolls and E-ZPass discounts on other roadways. The tag is acceptable in 15 states in the E-ZPass network.

Each account can have up to four E-ZPass tags. Those with an E-ZPass account can purchase a tag to add to the existing account.

Reed announces Wednesday FEMA resource workshop

for local groups

Rep. Tom Reed an-nounced an upcoming Federal Emergency Manage-ment Agency workshop in Dunkirk to help local fire departments and EMS organizations better care for and meet their firefighting and emergency response needs and enhance those capabilities.

The workshop will be held Wednesday at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator in Dunkirk.

The workshop is being held in conjunction with the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Traveler advisory

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion announced that a highway paving project is scheduled to begin today on Route 76 in Sherman. Motorists should expect to encounter daily lane closures on Route 76 between Route 474 and Sherman, between 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Traffic will alternate the use of one lane controlled by flaggers in the vicinity of the work zone. This project is expected to last two weeks.

This work is weather dependent and will be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Bridge open

The Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities has announced that Chautauqua County Bridge No. 134, on County Route 4, Marks Road, in the town of French Creek, between Bush Road and County route 7 (French Creek-Mina Road), is now open.

Training session on identification and reporting of child abuse to be held

A state-mandated training session for professionals on identifying and reporting child abuse, maltreatment and neglect will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 8 at the LoGuidice Educational Center, E Building, Coordinated Health Conference Room, 9520 Fredonia-Stockton Road, Fredonia.

The training is required for all persons applying for a provisional or permanent certificate of license valid for administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service, or school service. Therefore, in addition to teachers and school administrators, the mandate affects school physicians, nurses, therapists and others in the fields of healthcare and education.

Participants should bring their licenses or certificate numbers with them if possible. A State Education Department certificate of completion will be provided for each course participant. Arts and Crafts Festival today and Saturday

The YWCA Westfield’s annual Arts and Crafts Festival will be held today and Saturday in Moore Park in Westfield, corner of Route 20 and 394. Vendors open each day at 9 a.m. Today they are open until 6 p.m., Saturday until 5 p.m.

The show has a 41-year history and goes on rain or shine. Visitors are offered free parking, free shuttle service and free admission to the park. Signs are posted throughout the village to point out the parking areas and provide directions.

More than 150 vendors display a variety of quality, hand-crafted items for sale. Jewelry, pottery, decorative and functional wood items as well as home decor and clothing are just a few of the items customers will find.

Several area churches, service clubs and other community organizations offer food and beverages in the park and many area restaurants are within walking distance. Westfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is returning with its popular pie tent and Welch’s Juices will be available at the YWCA tent.

Academy Heights neighborhood meeting Monday evening

On Monday at 6:30 p.m. in St John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Dunkirk, 16 W. Fourth St., members of the community will meet to discuss neighborhood issues.

Objections to the huge lighted billboard scheduled to be placed at the corner of Fifth Street and Central Avenue by Lake Erie Health Systems will be one of the agenda items. Community members interested in preserving the historic integrity of their neighborhoods should come to discuss alternative ways for Brooks Hospital to announce its rebranding effort.

The main speaker of the evening will be Leesa Rittelmann from SUNY Fredonia, who will present a powerpoint program and discuss Yarn Bombing.

This meeting is open to anyone who wants to learn more about this artistic splash and how we might incorporate it into various Dunkirk neighborhoods as a festive temporary display of creativity.

Music on the Pier

Jackson Rohm makes one of his final appearances in the area today at 6:30 p.m. at the Dunkirk Festivals Committee’s Music on the Pier series pier, sponsored by Matt’s News and Ralph’s Pennzoil.

Rohm will be moving to California at the beginning of August. Come see Chautauqua County’s own bring his original music from seven full length albums, as well as some covers by Tom Petty, Cat Stevens and Train.

‘Dialogues’

to appear on Access Channel 5

“Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia. Hosted by Tina Zboch, the program will feature guest Dr. Virginia Horvath.

Horvath is president of SUNY Fredonia. Some of the topics include reflections of her first year as president as well as plans for the future.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 2.

Chautauqua County Bridge No. 29 to be closed for construction

Chautauqua County Bridge No. 29 on County Route 25 in the Town of Chautauqua will be closed to all traffic Monday.

This closure is due to replacement of this structure. A detour will be posted.

This closure shall remain in effect until the replacement structure is completed.

Fun Fest Saturday at Lily Dale Auditorium

Plans for the annual Fun Fest sponsored by the Church of the Living Spirit call for an event bigger and better than ever. The church fundraiser is scheduled 7-10 p.m. Saturday at the Lily Dale Auditorium.

Admission at the door is $5, and each one paying the fee will receive five tickets for the basket auction. Those ages 16 and under may attend free of charge. 4-H event encourages county raised beef

Chautauqua County Beef Producers sponsor an incentive show for beef cattle each year at the Chautau-qua County Fair. It is open to any child currently en-rolled in Chautauqua Coun-ty 4-H and the 4-H Beef Program. All beef steers and heifers entered in this show were bred and raised in Chautauqua County.

Money raised from Chautauqua County Beef Producers and local businesses is paid out to the top winners. This year’s top steers belong to Kayla Schauman, Makayla Keefe, Kayla Schauman, Sarah Osborne, and Kim Walker. The top heifers results were: Sarah Osborne had the Grand Champion Heifer, and Rachel Ecklund had the Grand Champion Female.

Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser at Angola Library Friday

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills announces that this year’s Angola Public Library Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the library, 34 N. Main St., Angola.

Sahlen’s hot dogs will be sold for $1 and Italian sausage for $2; both meals include a bottle of spring water. The event is held rain or shine.

The event will also feature a bicycle raffle, clown performance and bake sale. Bicycle raffle tickets are $1 each or $5 for six. The drawing will be held during the Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser.

Legislator Mills has been hosting Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers in his district for seven years with nearly $40,000 raised. Proceeds from the fundraiser directly benefit the host library, helping to support its mission of supplying quality programming and materials to patrons.

Gretchen Gaede to appear on Senior Report Saturday

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Gretchen Gaede as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Gade will discuss art in photography. She has a studio in the Chautauqua Institution.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995.

The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest.

Schibetta memorial to be held Friday

The Schibetta family, in conjunction with the Fredonia Beaver Club, will host a memorial for Jim Schibetta at the club’s’ Banquet Hall, followed by a performance at the outdoor pavilion, on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m.

The free event will be in honor of the late Jim Schibetta, who passed away in February.

The Schibetta Brothers Band will perform with special guests.

Come and see them play one last time in honor of their older brother.

‘Dialogues’ to appear on Access Channel 5

“Dialogues” is a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia.

Hosted by Tina Zboch, the program will feature guest Dr. Virginia Horvath. Horvath is president of SUNY Fredonia. Some of the topics include reflections on her first year as president as well as plans for the future.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 2.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, West-field and Portland areas.

Fredonia brush collection under way

The village of Fredonia is currently in the process of picking up limbs and yard waste. Collection began on Monday and continues until every village street has been collected once.

Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than four feet in length with bundles no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The dropoff area will be available until further notice.

The cooperation of residents is greatly appreciated.

The next scheduled pickup will start on Aug. 26.

Church invites families to ‘Adventure Land, the Valley of Choices’

Children ages 4 to 11 are invited to the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church at 252 E. Main St. in Westfield for the program “Adventure Land, the Valley of Choi-ces,” a Western-themed program from Wednesday until the end of the summer that meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

The Chautauqua County Humane Society will hold a rabies vaccination clinic Thursday at the Strunk Road Adoption Center in Jamestown from 5 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for the rabies vaccine that will be available for cats, dogs and ferrets. Attending pets need to be leashed or in a pet carrier.

The same evening distemper shots will be available for dogs only at no charge for Chautauqua County residents. People seeking the distemper vaccine are asked to provide proof of county residency in the form of a driver’s license or utility bill. This is made possible by a grant from the Chautau-qua Region Community Foundation.

Gas up 8 cents

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 8.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.82/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.68/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 19.8 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 14.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 9.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 19.0 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

The Fredonia Village Board will hold a public hearing today at 7:30 p.m. in the Trustees Room of the village hall. The hearing will be in regard to two proposed local laws. One is regarding the prohibition of the consumption of alcoholic beverages or drugs by anyone under 21 years of age on private property. The other proposed law is regarding the prohibition of trailers or trailer trucks parking on village streets.

Festival of Grapes Pageant looking for participants

The Festival of Grapes Pageant is accepting participants for this year’s Festival of Grapes Pageant to be held on Sept. 14 at 6:15 p.m. in the Silver Creek high school auditorium. There are three age categories: ages 7-9, 11-13 and 14-18. All contestants must be enrolled in a school in the grape belt region, which includes all of Chautauqua County and as far as Eden in southern Erie County, to qualify.

There is a mandatory orientation meeting Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Silver Creek high school auditorium where contestants and their parents will meet Pageant Director Diana Carpus and receive important information on this year’s event and its requirements. All potential contestants and parents must attend this meeting to participate, no exceptions.

Lily Dale Pet Remembrance Celebration Tuesday

Bring your pets and take part in the second annual Lily Dale Pet Remembrance Celebration. The event op-ens at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lily Dale Pet Cemetery.

Rev. Joanne Copley-Nigro, founder of the event, invites pets and their human companions to take part in a brief program of music and prayer.

Pets will be blessed and animals that have passed on will be remembered and honored. The cemetery, located off East Street on the path to the Inspiration Stump, was established in 1900, and is believed to be one of the oldest municipal pet cemeteries in the country.

Former companions of animals that have passed but are not buried in the cemetery, may bring a photograph, or share a story or prayer during the service. Also, a pebble or flower may in left at the cemetery in memory of pets.

History Days to feature Civil War Medicine display with ‘Dr. Joe’

Included in this weekend’s Fredonia History Days are the Civil War Medicine presentations by “Dr.” Joe Bolivard from Forestville. “Dr. Joe” will have a huge display of authentic Civil War artifacts used by surgeons during the Civil War and discuss with visitors how the medical staff dealt with the task of caring for the soldiers during the conflict.

“Dr. Joe” will also have a limited supply of his own personal collection of rare Civil War books for visitors to see, as well as purchase in some cases.

“Dr. Joe” is assisted by his nurse for the day, Miss Lynanne Woolley, herself a re-enactor and soon-to-be senior at Forestville High School.

Visitors may visit the Civil War Medicine tent of “Dr. Joe” between 1 and 5 p.m. today in the park adjacent to the Fredonia Farmer’s Market.

Traveler advisory issued for Friday

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion announced that intermittent lane closures are scheduled to begin Friday on NY Route 5 eastbound and westbound, between Pleasant Avenue and Dela-meter Road, in the towns of Hamburg and Evans to conduct road resurfacing. The lane closures will occur daily from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. for about three weeks.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

Missing playground equipment returned

The playground climber removed from the property of the Assembly Of God Church, Silver Creek and featured in the OBSERVER July 11, has been recovered. It was seen in the bed of a pickup truck traveling on Bennett State Road early in the morning of July 11 and was found to be on the church property after 10:30 a.m. “Thank you so much for your assistance in the recovery of this property,” church officials wrote in an e-mail to the OBSERVER.

The Veteran’s Park and Lighthouse Museum in Dunkirk will set up a booth to honor all Vietnam veterans from the area during Fair Week.

With this memorial, John Fedyszyn will recognize all Vietnam veterans, both living and deceased. Fedyszyn is asking that any Vietnam veterans in the area, or family members or friends of area Vietnam veterans, gather photos, letters, stories, or other memorabilia and bring them to the Lighthouse or Fedyszyn’s home. The items will be displayed and then returned at the end of the fair. This is a wonderful opportunity to remember loved ones or to proudly proclaim that veterans served their country during Vietnam. This booth will also give fair attendees a glimpse of how service members from the area viewed the war at the time it was happening.

The 2013 Fredonia History Days are coming Friday and Saturday in Barker Common. One of the main attractions this year are the Historical Carriage Tours narrated by Pomfret Town Historian Todd Langworthy. The tour is close to an hour long, featuring a beautiful evening horse-drawn carriage ride around the Village of Fredonia with Langworthy as your guide. Learn about Fredonia’s past and enjoy the ride as you visit many historic sites found throughout the village. Tickets are $10 each and available.

Saturdays at the Festivals Fredonia booth at the Fredonia Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to1 p.m. Tour times for both Friday and Saturday are 7, 8, 9 and 10 p.m. with departure from the Information Booth. Local author to visit Ahira Hall Memorial Library Wednesday

Local author Yvonne Park will be at the Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as part of the library’s ongoing “Wednesday Writ-er’s Workshops.” Park is the author of “Murder for Hire: My Brother’s Story” in which she writes of the 1980s contract murder of her brother in South Dayton, and the subsequent investigation.

The Chautauqua Walk to End Alzheimer’s which supports the free services, classes and outreach of the local Alzheimer’s Association Chapter, is set for this fall, with a big kickoff party.

This year’s Chautauqua County Walk will take place Sept. 7 at the Chautauqua Institution. A kickoff party to welcome new and returning walkers, offer advice on recruiting team members and raising money, and an opportunity to learn more about the disease and the chapter’s services, is set for today from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Louis Ferreri Park in Jamestown.

Town of Hanover water bills are payable at the Town Clerk’s Office in the Hanover Town Hall, 68 Hanover St., Silver Creek. The last day to make payment penalty-free is July 19. After that date, a 10 percent penalty will be added.

Festival of Grapes

pentathlon searching for contestants

The Festival of Grapes pentathlon will be held Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Silver Creek School parking lot. The rain date for the pentathlon is Sept. 17.

Boys who are ages 7-8 before the event takes place and reside in the grape belt region, which encompasses all of Chautauqua County and as far as Eden in southern Erie County, may participate in the event.

The boys have fun testing their skills in sports-related activities as part of the competition and are judged based on their abilities, skills and sportsmanship.

The winning prince and runners up will be announced at the Festival of Grapes opening ceremony Sept. 19 and will be able to stomp grapes and participate in the Sunday Parade.

Sunset Auxiliary holds chicken barbecue fundraiser today

The Sunset Bay Fire Auxiliary is in summer fundraising mode. Every year, the auxiliary holds three major fundraising events. The Father’s Day Breakfast was held on June 17. This is an annual event and always well attended and supported. The next event is the third annual chicken barbecue. This event will be held today from 1 to 5 p.m. and is the biggest of the three major events. The cost is $8.50 and there is the option to eat-in or drive-thru. As soon as the barbecue is over, plans for the final breakfast will be finalized. This event is usually held the third Sunday of August.

The auxiliary is always looking for new members to help support the firefighters. To be eligible, potential members must be willing to work on all events. Sunset Bay Fire Auxiliary meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the fire hall at 7 p.m. The auxiliary is on call to assist the firefighters whenever needed.

The auxiliary appreciates the community’s support of its fundraisers.

Fredonia History Days nearing

The 2013 Fredonia History Days are coming on July 19 and 20 in Barker Common. One of the main attractions this year are the Historical Carriage Tours narrated by Pomfret Town Historian Todd Langworthy. The tour is close to an hour long, featuring a beautiful evening horse-drawn carriage ride around the Village of Fredonia with historian Todd Langworthy as your guide. Festival of Grapes Pageant looking for participants

The Festival of Grapes Pageant is accepting participants for this year’s Festival of Grapes Pageant to be held Sept. 14 at 6:15 p.m. in the Silver Creek high school auditorium. There are three age categories: ages 7-9, 11-13 and 14-18.

All contestants must be enrolled in a school in the grape belt region, which includes all of Chautauqua County and as far as Eden in southern Erie County, to qualify.

There is a mandatory orientation meeting July 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Silver Creek high school auditorium where contestants and their parents will meet Pageant Director Diana Carpus and receive important information on this year’s event and its requirements.

All potential contestants and parents must attend this meeting to participate, no exceptions.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office in partner with New York State Police will host a child passenger safety seat check.

The Fredonia Village Board will hold a public hearing on July 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Trustees Room of the village hall.

The hearing will be in regards to two proposed local laws. One is regarding the prohibition of the consumption of alcoholic beverages or drugs by anyone under 21 years of age on private property.

The other proposed law is regarding the prohibition of trailers or trailer trucks parking on village streets.

Harrington Road to be closed Monday

The Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities has announced that railroad crews will make repairs to the Harrington Road railroad crossing located in the town of Sheridan.

Harrington Road will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday until about 3 p.m. on Thursday.

A detour will not be posted. Motorists should plan alternate routes.

Music on the Pier tonight features group 25 or 64

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. today, 25 or 64 brings its musical talents again to Music on the Pier with a unique tribute to Chicago. Sponsored by the Moni-uszko Club, 25 or 64 will bring you back to the greatest hits of the ’70s and ’80s.

Summer camp has openings

The Summer Better Than Others Day Camp, operated by the city of Dunkirk and held at Camp Gross, has openings: six slots open in Camp Session III the week of July 22-26 and 17 slots open in Camp Session IV the week of July 29-Aug. 2.

The cost per week for city residents is $40 for the first child and $30 for each additional child. The cost per week for non-city residents is $50 for the first child and $35 for each additional child. Lunch will be provided as are snacks. Games, nature hikes, lifeguard sup-ervised fishing and swimming, arts and crafts, sports and sing-a-longs will be featured to provide fun for children ages 5 through 11.

CJCA will accept young adults, age16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 1.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.64/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester.

Summer food program feeds kids for free

With summer beginning, it’s time to think about keeping children healthy while school is out. Forestville Elementary School provides free lunches to all children during the summer who are 18 or younger. This is an open site, so children do not have to be students from the District.

This summer, meals will be served at the Forestville Elementary School Cafeteria, Monday thru Fridays beginning July 8 and ending on Aug. 9. The time lunches will be served will be 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A snack will be available also at 3:30 p.m. For more information, contact Karen Giardina at 965-6530.

Each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like Forestville Central School to provide free meals and/or snacks to children when school is out for the summer. Society of artists to meet July 9

The Chautauqua County Society of Artists will be meeting at the Celoron Community Building on Tuesday, July 9 at 6 p.m. The agenda will include final arrangements for the July 13 and 14 “Art in the Park” art festival which will be held at Mayville’s Lakeside Park. Dayton Town Board meeting change

The Dayton Town Board will meet on the second Wednesday of the month. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the town hall, 9100 Route 62. The date change will continue until further notice.

County Planning Board to meet Tuesday

The Westfield-Barcelona Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring First Friday Westfield this Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. by the Main Street shops. The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Independence Day. Normal playground hours and in-struction resumes Monday.

Registration under way for summer session

Jamestown Community College’s second summer session, July 8 to Aug. 15, will offer day and evening courses as well as online learning opportunities at JCC’s Jamestown, Cattaraugus County campuses, North County and Warren centers.

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Ruth Lundin as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Lundin is president of the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary.

Blood drive in Cassadaga Wednesday

The Cassadaga Fire Department Auxiliary will host a Community Blood Drive Wednesday at the Mill Street Community Building from 3 to 6 p.m. The auxiliary will award a $25 gas card to a local winner. Land Bank meeting set for Wednesday

The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development will hold an official meeting of the Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the CCIDA Board Room, 200 Harrison St., Jamestown.

This general meeting of the CCLBC is being conducted to discuss business associated with the disposition of Land Bank Properties and other official business as required (agenda will be provided at the meeting).

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.65/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.50/g

“Hidden in the Hills – The 20th Annual Great Blue Heron Festival” is airing on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, running through Friday.

If you’ve never been to the festival, this documentary will give you a taste of what The Great Blue Heron Festival is all about. The program was produced by Mark Kiyak.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Westfield, Chau-tauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Ripley and Portland.

Members of the Dunkirk Class of 1993 are proud to be hosting the annual DHS Alumni Pub Crawl on Friday in honor of the 20th anniversary of their graduation. Jackson Lecture July 9

Charles Fried, Beneficial Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, will deliver Chautauqua Institution’s 9th annual Robert H. Jackson Lecture on the Supreme Court of the United States. Professor Fried will give the Jackson Lecture on July 9 at 4 p.m. in Chautauqua’s Hall of Philosophy.

Fried is a leading jurist, scholar, teacher and litigator. From 1985-1989, he served as Solicitor General of the United States under President Reagan. From 1995-1999, he served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts. Except for those periods of public service, he has been teaching at Harvard since 1961.
