Andrew Goodell on Senior report Saturday

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Andrew Goodell as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Goodell is the New York State Assemblyman for the 150th District.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995.

The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest.

The guest is subject to change.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19.

The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time War-ner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television that has been recently autoscanned.

Area blood drives scheduled this month

SUNY Fredonia will host blood drives on Oct. 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in the Williams Center, rooms 142-144.

A blood drive will be held on Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Clymer Central School in the auditorium/gym on East Main Street.

Throughout October, all are invited to donate blood at the American Red Cross at 325 E. Fourth St., Jamestown. Blood drives will take place every Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding Oct. 23 and 24.

Chautauqua Suites will host a blood drive on Oct. 3 from noon to 4 p.m. in Ball-room 4. The Chautauqua Suites are located at 215 W. Lake Road, Mayville.

A blood drive will be held in the gym of the Cassadaga Job Corps Recreation Building from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 4. at 8115 Glasglow Road, Cassadaga.

The Blessed Mary Angela Roman Catholic Parish on 324 Townsend St. in Dunkirk will host a blood drive on Oct. 21 from noon to 6 p.m.

A blood drive will be held in the Portland Fire De-partment’s social hall on Oct. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6481 W. Main Road, Portland.

Parings and Pairings at JCC Oct. 10

Parings and Pairings, a culinary adventure with Chef Tim Mills and Johnson Estate Winemaker Jeff Murphy, will be held Oct. 10 at JCC Jamestown CSCE 113/114 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Habitat for Humanity meeting Thursday evening in Jamestown

The Jamestown Satellite of the Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Jamestown Prender-gast Library Fireplace Room.

Anyone interested in participating as a volunteer in any capacity in the organization is welcome. Current-ly, Habitat is seeking individuals to work on the Family Partner Committee, Construction Committee, and/or Community Out-reach Committee.

The Jamestown Satellite has the good fortune to have a donated house to restore on Tew Street. Work there will include updating and modernizing this family home. This work can begin as soon as a volunteer base and organization is established in the Jamestown area.

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 431 E. Chestnut St. in Dunkirk.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus, located at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as GED classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in Certified Nurse Aide, Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing and Electrical are available as well as the Advanced Training for Licensed Practical Nurse.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Applicants can apply for on-center living or off-center living, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted. Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 5.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.70/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Saturday steak fry to benefit Relay for Life

The Kosciuszko Club/-Paper Factory Relay for Life Team will hold a fundraising steak fry at the Kosciuszko Club, 225 Nevins St., Dunkirk, on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m.

The Forestville American Legion will host its annual Steak, Ham and Turkey Raffle Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the J. Dinner fundraiser to be held Saturday at VFW Pine Valley Post 2522

The Chautauqua County Council of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Sr. Vice Commander Tom Rabb and Sr. Vice President Robin Richmond will host a dinner fundraiser at the Pine Valley Post 2522 in Cherry Creek Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes meatloaf, salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables, bread and dessert. Upstate New York Chapter of Train Collectors Association train show Nov. 16

The TCA Upstate New York Chapter of Train Collectors Association will present its annual TCA Toy Train Show at the former Erie-Lackawanna Train Sta-tion Nov. 16. It will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 211-217 W. Second St. in Jamestown.

There will be a wide array of trains and related items for sale. Toy trains and accessories will be available and vendors are required to have at least 50 percent of items for sale be train- or scenery-related. Tables will be available for vendors at a small fee.

Model trains and scenery will be set up for people and their children to enjoy. Many of these trains will be fully operational.

There will be a small admission charge for adults and children with children under 12 free.

The Northern Chautau-qua Community Foundation is offering a Fall Social Media Webinar Series for non-profit organizations. Ice skating classes begin Tuesday at SUNY Fredonia

Ice skating classes will be offered at SUNY Fredonia in Steele Hall beginning Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Classes will run for 10 weeks and are open to anyone four years old and older. Classes will be offered two days per week – Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. – and participants may attend one per week or both.

Figure skating classes will be available on Sundays at 2:15 p.m. for those who are badge level 7 and up. Classes will culminate in a Christmas recital.

Foster parenting info meeting scheduled Tuesday

The Chautauqua County Dept. of Social Services will host an informational meeting for those interested in becoming foster parents on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at Jamestown Community College’s Training Center, North Campus on Bennett Road in Dunkirk.

The South Dayton United Methodist Church is having a rummage sale on Oct. 4-5.

On Friday, it will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 5, it will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bag sale begins Saturday at noon.

Gowanda village to host last recycling event Saturday

The electronic recycle event on Saturday will be the last for Gowanda. The village announced at a board meeting due to new laws, municipalities cannot accept electronics. The event will run from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the sewer plant on Aldrich Street. All proceeds will be donated to the village youth recreation program.

Valley Historical Society meets Tuesday

The next regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sinclairville Free Library Main St Sinclairville.

First ever Music on the Shores Saturday

On Saturday, the Dun-kirk Camp and Conference Center will hold its first ever Music on the Shores event at 3602 East Lake Road to raise money for the “Send a Kid to Camp” program.

The event starts at noon with live music by The Untouchables. There will be a beer tent, raffles, giveaways and food vendors all day. Willow Creek Winery will be on site as well.

From 3-8 p.m., other musical performances will include SUNY Fredonia’s A Cappella group, Much More Chill, Everett Lee and the Underground Stampede, and Black Widow who will perform from 8-11 p.m.

For children, there will be bounce houses, face painting and carnival games.

Julie LaGrow, executive director of the program said, “Our goal is to get as many children to summer camp as we can. It’s such a special experience.”

Music on the Shores is sponsored by Advanced Production Group, Star Printed Graphics and Casella Waste Services. All proceeds will benefit the program.

Church workshop Saturday afternoon

White Dove Crow, one of the most popular lecturers at the Universal Unity of Spirit Church will share more Native American wisdom and teachings at a workshop, “Medicine Wheel Teachings” 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. In her presentation she will compare the intricate design of the medicine wheel of Sun Bear’s teachings – which appears in the famous Chippewa medicine man’s, book, “Dancing With the Wheel,” – and how that wheel balances and harmonizes with the simplistic design of the Woodland Cree Medicine Wheel. The event will be hosted at the church at 89 N. Main St., (Route 60). Donation $20.

In addition to that event, the Woodland Cree medicine woman will be guest speaker Sunday at Universal Unity of Spirit services, scheduled 1:30 p.m. At that time she will address “The Miracles of Saint Kateri,” the first Native American female to be canonized.

The medicine woman spent years of study under a Hopi elder and has studied at The Association of Research & Enlightenment. She has shared sacred teachings of Native American spirituality to groups and individuals in appearances through the country and Canada. She will be available for private consultations by appointment on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. each day. D&F Meals on Wheels announce winners from Farm Festival

Many individuals stopped by the Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels booth at this year’s Farm Festival and contributed to the organization. The organization would like to thank the community for stopping by its booth and purchasing raffle tickets to fund Meals on Wheels. Purchasing these tickets also gave individuals a chance to win one of four donated baskets filled with PartyLite products, lottery tickets and other items as well as learn a little about Meals on Wheels.

The winners are Judy Morris of Sheridan, Rox-anne Sobecki of Brocton, Karen Kwiatkowski of Fredonia and Jan Jarvis of Silver Creek.

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels has been delivering meals to home-bound seniors for 43 years now and is always looking to help more seniors and their families in the community. It is also always seeking volunteers to assist with its mission.

Pomfret to read water meters soon

The town of Pomfret will read water meters at the end of this week and the beginning of next week. This includes Chestnut Street and Berry and Van Buren roads, as well as all roads in the North End Water District that are tied into the municipal water supply.

Erie 2 BOCES to hold identification, reporting of child abuse training session

The Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES School & Societal Perspectives Program is offering a training session for professionals concerning identifying and reporting child abuse, maltreatment and neglect. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 3, at the LoGuidice Educational Center in the Coordinated Health Conference Room in Building “E,” located at 9520 Fredonia-Stockton Road, Fredonia.

Individuals applying for provisional or permanent certificates of license for administrative, supervisory, classroom and general school positions are required to take this course by mandate of the New York state Education Department. In addition, school physicians, nurses, therapists, and individuals in other health care and education fields must also complete the program.

The cost of the workshop is $30, and participants are asked to bring their current license or certificate number if possible. A State Education Department certificate of completion will be issued to all attendees. Veterans luncheon today in Cassadaga

Today at the American Legion, 228 Maple Ave., Cassadaga, a veteran’s luncheon will be held at noon. There will be an introduction of WWII and Korean War veterans and recognition of their membership lengths with the legion. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and stories and comments from the veterans will follow.

A meeting of the Dunkirk Local Development Corp-oration scheduled for today at 11 a.m. in City Hall has been postponed. The Planning Board meeting scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. has also been canceled.

Fredonia Healing and Learning Center to offer spiritual workshops

The Angels of Hope Healing and Learning Center at 8 Park Place in Fredonia is hosting two workshops on Sunday. “Healing Methods,” presented by Colleen Vanderzyden from 2 to 4:30 p.m., is an overview of various healing methods and techniques that can be used to heal yourself and others. “Intuitive Investigation: An Informational Evening with Linda Kay deJesus” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. explores the field of psychic investigation, including a look at some of the cases deJesus has worked on herself with various Massachusetts law enforcement agencies. Jaime “Shaggy” Flores, a New Nuyorican poet, will be performing at SUNY Fredonia Wednesday night at 8:30 in McEwen Hall room 202. The multicultural affairs department is bringing him to campus for Hispanic Heritage celebration.

Street closing set to begin Monday

The Dunkirk Department of Public Works has been notified by Norfolk & Southern Railroad of the temporary closing of Townsend Street between Courtney and Doughty streets for repairs to the railroad crossing beginning Monday and lasting through Oct. 4.

Vehicles should use the marked detour or other alternate routes around the work zone and expect some delays in the construction area. Please use caution during this maintenance.

Registration is being accepted for the 29th annual Rotary Blood Screening program.

The program includes a clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit, and T4 Thyroxing test for $45. A PSA test is an additional $25.

Appointments are from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Dunkirk High School with a free blood pressure screening and test results sent to your personal physician within one week.

Informational meeting set on Forestville water districts

There will be an informational meeting for the residents on Creek Road and Bennett State Road affected by the village of Forestville decommissioning the springs in Arkwright in March 2014. This meeting will take place on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Forestville Village Hall. Discussion of forming water districts and other options will be the topics.

An engineer from the firm running the water project in Forestville will be there as well as the Chautauqua County Department of Health Water Recourse Specialist to answer questions and explore options in this matter. Forestville Attorney Michael Sullivan and Deputy Mayor Kevin Johnson will also be in attendance.

Sheridan holding tire amnesty program

The town of Sheridan is holding a tire amnesty program and will continue to collect old tires until Sept. 30 or until full capacity has been reached. The town is limited to 500 tires. Tires must be 19 inches or less with no rims and can be delivered to the town barns for pickup. Residents may call the Sheridan Highway Department at 673-1806 to schedule a time to drop off tires.

Westfield Community Chorus cancels season

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Westfield Community Chorus will not be performing this year. The choral leaders are hopeful that the group can reform next year. They wish to thank all choir members and supporters who have been so faithful over the last 40 years.

Outreach committee to hold fundraisers

The Mayville United Methodist Church Community Outreach Committee will be holding a car wash, can drive, yard sale and hot dog sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the church located at 81 South Erie St., Mayville. In the event of rain, the yard sale and hot dog sale will be held inside. The proceeds from this event will help fund the outreach activities planned for the community.

The village of Gowanda will host an electronic recycling event on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The event will take place at the sewer plant on Aldrich Street.

Fredonia to pick up yard waste starting Monday

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning Monday. Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once.

Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than four feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice.

The cooperation of residents is greatly appreciated.

The next scheduled pick-up will start on Oct. 21.

Roundabout, traffic pattern change

The New York State Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that the new roundabout at the intersection of routes 5, 20 and 438 on the Cattaraugus Territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians is now open to traffic. Travel restrictions remain in effect in the vicinity of the roundabout.

Route 5 from Milestrip Road to Route 438 will be closed to all traffic in both directions. Motorists traveling on Route 5 will be directed to follow a posted detour using Milestrip Road and Route 20.

A temporary traffic signal will control traffic at the intersection of Milestrip Road and Route 20 while the detours remain in effect.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limits along the detour routes. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

The railroad tracks on Alleghany Road leading into Sunset Bay in the town of Hanover will be serviced beginning today at 7 a.m. to be finished by 7 p.m. Friday. Motorists are advised to use the access road. Hanover Highway Superintendent Steve D’Angelo said detour signs will be posted and the school district and emergency personnel have been notified of the situation.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser for Ashley Gagola

Ashley Gagola, 25, suffers from gastroparesis which is a medical condition that means paralyzes stomach. She has to be fed through a feeding tube. She also suffers from mitochondrial disease. Mitochondrial are responsible for creating more than 90 percent of energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail less and less energy is generalized within the cell causing them to die. Cell death leads to the organs shutting down. Ashley has a 3-year-old son.

From 5 to 8:30 p.m. today, local law enforcement officers will trade their uniforms for aprons at the Dunkirk Applebee’s restaurant located at 3908 Vineyard Drive.

As part of Applebee’s “Law and Orders” fundraiser, officers will team up with the wait staff to serve customers, bus tables and hopefully collect tips – all in hopes of raising funds for Special Olympics Athletes across New York.

So many veterans feel confused about benefits and services they’ve earned. There is so much to know and so many changes from one year to the next.

That is why the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans and the Harley-Davidson Foundation have teamed up to offer help.

Blood drives Friday, Monday

The Community Blood Bank of Western New York is holding one last promotion to end the summer and it’s going to be a blood bath.

Fall is here and usually the students returning to the class rooms (and schools holding blood drives) raise the blood supply until the holidays and this promotion was designed to ensure a smooth transition for the blood supply, although we are struggling right now and have two blood drives locally where people can help.

Everyone who donates in September is entered to win 4 tickets to the 1 o’clock Sunday NFL game on Nov. 10 when the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Buffalo Bills in Pittsburgh. The tickets are valued at about $1,000.

Antique tractor pull, flea market and car show Saturday in Busti

The Busti Volunteer Fire Department and Southern Tier Classic Chevy Club will present their annual antique tractor pull, flea market and car show Saturday at the Busti Firemen’s Grounds on Lawson Road.

This rain-or-shine event begins at 10 a.m. with car registration. The show is open to all cars, trucks, motorcycles and special interest vehicles. The first 100 owners to register will receive a free dash plaque. Registration is $7 per vehicle. Awards will be given at 3:50 p.m.

The tractor pull will begin at 11 a.m. Hot food and snacks will be available throughout the day.

Festival of Grapes Pentathlon still

accepting participants

The Festival of Grapes Pentathlon is still accepting participants for the event.

The Pentathlon will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at the Silver Creek elementary school parking lot. The rain date is Tuesday.

All boys who live in the Grape Belt region and are 7 or 8 years old before the event can participate. Participants will have fun testing their skills in sports-related activities and will be judged on their abilities, points earned and sportsmanship.

‘Walk For Wellness 5K Run/Walk’ Saturday

On Saturday, the West-field Memorial Hospital Regional Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor the 26th annual Dr. Robert E. Storms Walk For Wellness 5K Run/Walk. This event benefits the WMH Cardiac Re-hab and Physical Therapy departments. Over the past 25 years the community support for this event has enabled both departments to add new services and equipment. Again this year all funds raised will be used to purchase exercise and physical therapy equipment.

The 5K run/walk will begin at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at 9:30 a.m. in the hospital lobby to register and pick up maps and T-shirts. Auxiliary members will monitor water stations along the route. Pledge sheets may be obtained prior to the event at the WMH lobby, ER desk, or PT department.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as GED classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse. The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Fredonia Place to hold Homemade Happiness baking contest Friday

On Friday, Fredonia Place will hold its Homemade Happiness baking contest. The cost of entry is $5, and all proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. To enter, bakers should drop off their homemade baked goods that include apples before 1 p.m. on Friday and fill out entry forms. Contest rules are as follows: Baked goods can be made in any form (pie, cookies, cake, etc.) but apples must be included in the recipe; this contest is for non-professional bakers and is open to the community; all entries must be homemade; contestants are responsible for submitting a written (typed, please) recipe to go along with their baked goods; winning recipes will be published on the Fredonia Place website and Facebook page; all baked goods will be judged on presentation, taste and creativity – participants will be scored 1 to 5 in each category.

Judges will then decide first, second and third place winners based on the highest scores. Judging will take place at 3 p.m. at Fredonia Place. Bakers need not be present to win.

Gas price unchanged

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.81/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester.

DFD run report

The Dunkirk Fire Depart-ment reports going on 174 runs in August, with 138 of those EMS runs which resulted in 50 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. There were 24 still alarms, eight box alarms and four mutual aid calls the DFD answered, according to Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

Group to host Reed

Southern Tier TEA Party Patriots will sponsor a town hall with Congressman Tom Reed at 7 p.m. Friday in the Fireside Room at Jamestown Prendergast Library, 509 Cherry St.

Town hall events provide an opportunity for ex-changes between Reed and his constituents. Reed has been asked to address questions submitted to him on defunding or repealing Obamacare; his level of support for the Fourth Amend-ment, especially after the NSA scandal; his views on a select committee to investigate the Benghazi scandal; immigration; elimination of the IRS to be replaced by a Fair Tax or Flat Tax; and his view of a conservative Republican.

Antique tractor pull, flea market and car show in Busti Saturday

The Busti Volunteer Fire Department and the Southern Tier Classic Chevy Club’s antique tractor pull, flea market and car show is Saturday at the Busti Firemen’s Grounds on Lawson Road.

This rain or shine event begins at 10 a.m. with car registration. The show is open to all cars, trucks, motorcycles and special interest vehicles. The first 100 owners to register will receive a free dash plaque. Registration is $7 per vehicle. Awards will be given at 3:50 p.m.

The tractor pull will begin at 11 a.m. Hot food and snacks will be available for purchase.

drawing course begins Tuesday at JCC

A charcoal portrait drawing course will be taught Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 10, at Jamestown Community Col-lege’s Jamestown Campus.

Training session on identifying, reporting child abuse Thursday

A state-mandated training session for professionals on identifying and reporting child abuse, maltreatment and neglect will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hewes Educational Center in the Large Group Room, Route 394, Ashville.

The training is required for all persons applying for a provisional or permanent certificate of license valid for administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service or school service. Therefore, in addition to teachers and school administrators, the mandate affects school physicians, nurses, therapists and others in the fields of health care and education.

Participants should bring their licenses or certificate numbers with them if possible. A State Education De-partment certificate of completion will be provided for each course participant. program on Access Channel 5

Coverage of the Town of North Harmony Fundrais-ing Pig Roast for the Veterans Memoria is airing on Access Channel 5. The 10-minute program will air through Friday at 1:50 p.m. and 7:50 p.m.

The event was held at the Hadley House on Stow. Interviews with Frank Stow, Gary and Connie Carlson, Rox Saxton, Mike Swanson, Penny Best and Nancy Thomas are included in the program.

The current memorial is between Fardink Road & County Route 43 in Ashville and is in desperate need of repair.

The program is part of the series “Destination Chau-tauqua County” that airs on Channel 5, available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Westfield, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Ripley and Portland areas.

Ferry history program on Access Channel 5

Jim Roselle’s visit to the Bemus Point Stow Ferry for his show, “Times of Your Life,” is airing on Access Channel 5. The hour-long program will air through Friday at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily.

Roselle’s visit to the ferry that crosses the narrows of Chautauqua Lake between Bemus Point and Stow is a historical look through the eyes of past, present and potentially future captains of the Ferry. Roselle rode back and forth across the narrows doing his live show on WJTN, 1240 on Aug. 31. He interviewed many people, including but not limited to: John and Betty Cheney, Roger Miller, Peachy Wagner, Chris Flanders, Martha Anderson, Roberta Schriss and Bill Locke.

The program covers the 202 years of ferry history running between the narrows. The program also mentions the book, “A Ferry Tale,” by the late Art Thomas. Special Thanks to Jim Roselle, Russ Dietrich, Andrew Hill and Brynne Deppas of Media One Radio Stations.

The Elvis Show tonight on city’s Music on the Pier

The city of Dunkirk will host Music on the Pier series today and Friday.

Today, The Elvis Show starring Patrick Johnson, will take over the pier. And Friday, on a special night, Stone Row will bring some Celtic Rock to the Pier. Both shows start at 6:30 p.m.

Patrick Johnson makes his debut in Dunkirk, marking the first time an Elvis performer takes the stage on the Pier.

This performance is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. On Friday, Stone Row makes their first appearance in Dunkirk since 2009.

Sheridan tire amnesty program Sept. 19-31

The town of Sheridan will begin holding a tire amnesty program Sept. 19 and will continue to collect old tires until Sept. 31 or until full capacity has been reached. The town is limited to 500 tires. Tires must be 19 inches or less with no rims and can be delivered to the town barns for pickup. Residents may call the Sheridan Highway Department at 673-1806 to schedule a time to drop off tires.

New York Spelling Bee calls for contestants

The New York Spelling Bee will celebrate 25 years of conducting bees for students in grades one through eight on May 3 at Weeds-port High School. Each grade has its own bee. Parents interested in having their children participate should contact program director Michael Ricci, who notes that there are a limited number of openings.

Pine Valley Elementary parking lot closed

The elementary school parking lot will be closed until October for construction. Parents will be able to drop off students between 7:30 and 7:50 a.m. and will be able to pick them up after school at 3 p.m. Before or after those times, parents will be directed to park elsewhere due to buses being at the school. The staff will park at the end of the building like in years past.

Blood drive Saturday

There will be a blood drive at the Ellington Fire Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This blood drive will be threw Community blood bank of Erie. Donate that day to be entered to win four tickets to see the Steelers vs. Bills on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

The Pine Valley Board of Education has changed the time of its regular board meeting on Thursday. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the board conference room, room 5, in the elementary school.

Dayton Volunteer Fire Co. chicken dinner fundraiser Sunday

The Dayton Volunteer Fire Company is sponsoring a chicken barbecue Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until they are sold out at the Fire Hall, 9512 Route 62. Meals are $9 for adults and $5.50 for children younger than 12. Meals each include half a chicken, salted potatoes, macaroni salad, coleslaw, a roll with butter, homemade dessert and a beverage. Take-out is available. All proceeds benefit the new fire hall fund.

Anniversary of ‘The Natural’ celebration

to be held this weekend

The 30th anniversary celebration of “The Natural” will be held in the South Dayton Village Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be train rides, model train display, amusement rides, food, games, crafts and antique cars.

On Saturday, the Slim Griffin Band will play from 3 to 5 p.m. and a spaghetti dinner will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the fire hall.

On Sunday, a beef on weck dinner lunch will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. with entertainment from the Mountain Railroad Band from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, call 988-5975.

Farm Festival events

to be re-aired tonight

The events that took place on the first night of the Fredonia Farm Festival in Barker Common are set to air on Public Access Channel 5 in Fredonia tonight, starting at 6 p.m. At that time, the kids’ tractor pull and various bands will be broadcast on the television station. Afterward, starting at 7:30 p.m., the Beatle Mania Now concert will air. Additional events of the Farm Festival are set to air in the coming days.

Meet, greet event planned for city high school on Friday

On Friday, the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Team at Dunkirk High School will host their second annual “Meet, Greet and Eat” event. Students, parents and community members are invited to come visit the high school.

There will be building tours, information booths featuring student extracurricular and club activities, community resources, games and food. Come spend some time getting to know your community and school while enjoying a light snack. The event, slated to begin at 1:45 p.m., is free and open to the community.

Community agencies attending include: the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County, Dun-kirk Police Department, SUNY Fredonia, Upward Bound, WIC, Jamestown Community College, Community Care, COI (TILP/SAFE HOUSE), Chautauqua Works, Dun-kirk Free Library, Pro-bation, Chautauqua County Educational Coalition and ZUMBA.

Charity walk Sunday to benefit lupus patients

Join the Lupus Alliance of Western New York for the Walk Along for Lupus Sunday at the Walden Galleria Mall.

The registration fee is $20 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12 and free for children younger than 5. Use the yellow parking/Regal Cinema entrance. Registra-tion will begin at 8 a.m. with the walk at 9 a.m.

Walkers will walk in the mall, so weather is not a concern. The event will feature a post party with music, face-painting, kids’ crafts and lunch, as well as information tables with volunteers available to answer questions about lupus.

Reed in Dunkirk Wednesday

Congressman Tom Reed will hold listening sessions this week before returning to Washington next week to debate President Barack Obama’s request for consent from Congress to launch attacks on Syria.

“While we have had many constituents calling our offices with their thoughts on whether or not the U.S. should get involved in this civil war, I also want to hear people’s thoughts in person,” Reed said.

Reed will be available in person Wednesday in Dunkirk City Hall at 3 p.m., after meetings in Hornell and Olean earlier in the day. Reed is scheduled to be in Big Flats, Owego and Geneva today for listening sessions.

“While this is short notice, I hope that people will be able to stop by and share their thoughts,” Reed said. “Of course all of our offices will continue to receive calls of those who cannot make one of the listening sessions.”

The program includes a clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit, and T4 Thyroxing test for $45. A PSA test is an additional $25.

Appointments are from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. on Sept. 14 at Fredonia High School and Sept. 21 at Dunkirk High School with a free blood pressure screening and test results sent to your personal physician within one week.

As of July 23, Time Warner Cable has moved public, educational and government access channels to a digital-only format on its cable systems. Cable subscribers with HDTV boxes will see no change. Newer flat screen televisions have digital converters built in. Subscribers with these televisions and no HD box can view Gateway Access 12 by using scan or autoprogram to locate the channel. Westfield Community Chorus begins rehearsal

Charcoal portrait drawing course begins Sept. 10

A charcoal portrait drawing course will be taught Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 10 through Oct. 10, at Jamestown Community College’s Jamestown Campus.

The course, taught by retired school art instructor Jim Vincent, meets from 6-7:30 p.m. The $89 tuition includes a charcoal kit.

Students will learn about the relevant characteristics of the human face, accurate proportional relationships, and effective shading techniques.

Festival of Grapes Headquarters open

The Festival of Grapes Headquarters, located in the Penny Saver Office on Main Street in Silver Creek, will be open every Tuesday in September from 3 to 6 p.m.

Headquarters will also be open during the festival on Sept. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m., on Sept. 20 from noon to 8 p.m., Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bridge to be closed Wednesday

Chautauqua County Bridge No. 853 on County Route 72 (Bard Road) will be closed to all traffic Wednesday.

This closure is due to the replacement of the bridge and will remain in effect until the replacement structure is completed. A detour will be posted.

Forestville brush

pickup first, third Tuesday of month

The residents of the village of Forestville are reminded that brush pickup is the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Brush must be cut in 4-foot lengths and piled neatly at the curb one day prior to scheduled pickup.

Leaves must be bagged and placed on the curb. Please do not rake leaves or place brush in the ditches.

Also, do not put pet waste in the leaf bags. Your cooperation is appreciated.

On Sept. 4, the Steel Plant Museum of Western New York’s Heritage Discovery Center will again host “First Wednesday,” a free monthly series.

Valley Historical Society to meet Tuesday evening

The next regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the museum at the corner of Main and Lester streets in Sinclairville.

The Dunkirk Town Board has scheduled a workshop and special meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road.

The purpose of the meeting and workshop is to begin budget discussions and review a proposed local law regulating parking in the town.

special meetings Tuesday evening

The Gowanda Planning Board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at village hall.

The meeting will be in regard to the Urgent Care expansion at 42 Commer-cial St. The Gowanda Village Board will host a special meeting immediately following the planning board meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the village hall.

Both meetings will be held in the board room.

The village board’s regular meeting will be Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. in the board room.

Festival of Grapes Pentathlon searching for contestants

The Festival of Grapes Pentathlon will be held Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Silver Creek School parking lot. The rain date for the Pentathlon will be Sept. 17.

Boys who are ages 7-8 before the event takes place and reside in the Grape Belt region, which encompasses all of Chautauqua County and as far as Eden in southern Erie County, may participate in the event.

The boys have fun testing their skills in sports-related activities as part of the competition and are judged based on their abilities, skills and sportsmanship.

The winning prince and runners up will be announced at the Festival of Grapes opening ceremony Sept. 19 and will be able to stomp grapes and participate in the Sunday Parade.
