The Hanford Bay CSX railroad crossing will be closed for repairs Tuesday, Dec. 3 and will reopen Wednesday, Dec. 4. The access road will be open.

Hospice tree lighting ceremony Friday

The Brocton Hospice Light a Life Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Village Commons.

Lily Dale Holiday Bazaar to be held Saturday

Lily Dale Children’s Acre will be participating in the Lily Dale Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lily Dale Fire Hall, where they will celebrate “The Joy of Giving.” Children and families are welcome at this all-ages event.

There will be a table for children to make holiday crafts, baked goods and more. Donations of non-perishable food items and gently used toys will be accepted and distributed to local charities. Donations of pet food and items will also be appreciated. Four-legged family members can appreciate the holidays, too. Come and see all of the other Lily Dale organizations’ wonderful holiday items and crafts for sale.

PAYCHEX Inc. free Health Care Reform seminar Dec. 11

Johnson, Mackowiak & Associates, LLP is sponsoring a free Health Care Reform seminar presented by Paychex, Inc. on Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator located in Dunkirk.

Wreaths for sale to benefit Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels will sell fresh wreaths and centerpieces as a fundraiser to help them provide services to those in need. Each 12-14″ fresh wreath is a mix of Frasier, white pine and Douglas greenery; includes one red bow, three white-tipped pine cones and a cluster of red berries; and costs $20. A larger 20-22″ wreath with added berry clusters is $25. They may be picked up on Dec. 6 at the Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels, 200 Lake Shore Drive W. in Dunkirk.

Fresh evergreen centerpieces, each approximately 15 x 12 x 6″ with a mix of Frasier, Douglas and white pine greenery; two red candles, two red bows and two groupings of artificial red berries, costs $22. Town calendars still available in Fredonia

Town of Pomfret Histor-ian Todd Langworthy has announced that the last quantity of his 2014 Fredo-nia-Pomfret History Calen-dars is now available at The Paper Factory on East Main Road in Fredonia.

The calendars feature a different historical picture and description each month, to provide a brief glimpse of our area’s past throughout the coming year. The calendars make great holiday gifts for anyone interested in local history and eager to learn about the past.

Elks to hold annual memorial service

The Dunkirk Elks Lodge 922 will hold its annual Memorial Service on Sunday. The service will be held at the Lodge at 428 Central Ave. in Dunkirk at noon. All members are invited to attend. Coffee and donuts will be served following the service.

Silver Creek garbage pickup to be delayed

Garbage pickup in the village of Silver Creek will be delayed from Thursday to Friday due to the Thanks-giving holiday. The village clerk’s office will also be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of the holiday.

Silver Creek Village Board workshop

The workshop of the Silver Creek Village Board will begin earlier than usual Monday. The board will host Kelly Borrello, a member of Chautauqua County Executive-elect Vince Horrigan’s transition team, at 6:30 p.m. in the village hall. The regular workshop and meeting will immediately follow this presentation.

Fredonia Elementary Chorus concerts planned for December

The Fredonia Elementary Music Department will hold its annual Winter Concert on Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Fredonia Central Schools District Auditorium.

You will hear musical selections performed by the 3rd grade, 4th grade, and Select Chorus members.

There will be an additional concert performed by the 2nd grade chorus students on Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. in the FCSD Auditorium, with a special appearance by the 1st grade chorus students.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Stockton Board to hold holiday lighting contest

The town of Stockton Planning Board is holding a townwide community Christmas lighting contest, including the village of Cassadaga.

There is no entry fee. Applications are available at the Stockton and Cassadaga Library and at the town clerk’s office.

Applications must be returned by Dec. 19 to the Stockton Town Hall or the Stockton and Cassadaga Library building, or the book drop-off.

Contest judging will take place at 6 p.m. on or after Dec. 23.

Vietnam Veterans of America 459 to meet

The Cops, Community, Kids and Christmas Toy and Clothing Drive will held in the village, sponsored by the Gowanda Police Depart-ment in cooperation with the Gowanda Central School and the community. Cherry Creek Fire Auxiliary Holiday Auction Dec. 12

The annual Holiday Auction to benefit the Cherry Creek Fire Auxiliary with auctioneer Ron Hennigh will take place Dec. 12 at the Cherry Creek Fire Hall at 6 p.m.

Refreshments will be available for purchase.

At the auction, food items will be collected for the Food Pantry, and new toys will be collected for the Salvation Army.

to hold special meeting

The Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3, at the Town Hall on Willow Road.

The purpose of the workshop and meeting is to continue discussion of a comprehensive plan and any other business lawfully before the board.

Town of Dunkirk offices closed Thursday

The Town of Dunkirk town offices and Justice Court will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The offices will reopen on Monday at 9 a.m.

South Dayton Holiday Craft Show & Turkey Biscuit Lunch to be held Dec. 7

The South Dayton Holiday Craft Show & Turkey Biscuit Lunch will be held at the South Dayton Firemen’s Activity Hall at 34 Maple St. on Dec. 7.

A craft show will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Santa visits from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (bring your camera for pictures); and the turkey biscuit lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The cost for lunch is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Fredonia Middle School Winter Concert Dec. 4

The Fredonia Middle School will hold its annual Winter Concert on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Fredonia Central Schools District Auditorium.

Musical selections will be performed by the M.S. Jazz Ensemble, the Choraliers, the Junior Orchestra, the Concert Orchestra, the Mixed Chorus, Beginning Band and the Concert Band.

Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Vendor tables available at upcoming Dunkirk Senior Center

Plans are being made for an indoor rummage/bake sale to be held at the Dunkirk Senior Center on Feb. 15.

City Hall closed Thursday

Dunkirk City Hall will be closed Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

There will be no rubbish pickup on Thursday. The Thursday rubbish pickup zone will be collected on Friday and the Friday pickup zone will be collected Saturday.

‘Cooking with Nick’ presents ‘Pasta Puttanesca’ this weekend

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns for an all-new second season of cooking programs. The upcoming show is entitled “Pasta Puttanesca.”

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, beginning Saturday and ending on Dec. 6.

Rizzo makes fresh spinach and white bean salad, pasta ala puttanesca, 3-cheese spicy garlic toasts and mini-fruit trifles for dessert. Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

The cable program is carried in the following communities: Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield.

All cable viewers in the mentioned area can receive Access Channel 5, which is now digital, at channel 5 on a converter, or channel 21.4 on a flat-panel TV with no converter.

In the event that the channel no longer comes in, the subscriber should contact Time Warner Cable.

Access Channel 5 programming is also aired each evening in the town of Hanover on Cable Channel 12 or Digital Channel 98.3.

County Antique Equipment Association meets tonight

The Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association will meet today 7 p.m. at the Laona Methodist Church, Porter and Wilson Streets, Laona. This will be the election meeting.

Pomfret water district residents reminded to inform town of status

Town of Pomfret residents connecting to the North End Water District waterlines, including West Main Street, Route 60, East Main Street, McAllister Road, Wilson Road, Porter Road and Webster Road, are being advised that their outside and inside plumbing must be inspected and approved by the town in order to have their water turned on and a meter installed.

The installation will be performed by the North End Water District Contractor, S. St. George Enterprises. Final connections are being made during the weeks of Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.

Pomfret offices to be closed for Thanksgiving

The Pomfret Town Clerk’s office will be closed Wednesday. The entire town hall will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 4.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.59/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester.

This compares with the national average that has increased 5.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.26/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 25.0 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 0.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

The national average has decreased 5.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 17.4 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Non-credit courses for personal and professional enrichment begin soon at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Wind turbine to be considered at Pomfret ZBA public hearing

The Pomfret Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the town hall to consider a special use permit at 10277 Christy Road for the purpose of constructing a wind turbine, which will be used to generate power for agricultural on-site use.

Magician performs today at Anderson-Lee Library

The Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek will host magician David Jeffers (“Mr. J”) for a presentation today at noon. Jeffers will recount “Turkey Tales,” the story of Albert the turkey. Shoptauqua Week begins Monday

Fredonia Mayor Stephen Keefe has released a proclamation for “Shoptauqua Week,” which will begin Monday and will conclude Dec. 1.

Shoptauqua Week provides a time to support locally owned and operated businesses. The village hall will fly the Shoptauqua Week banner during that week.

“The health and well being of our local economy depends upon our support of our friends and neighbors who own and operate those businesses,” the proclamation reads. “Many items on your Christmas shopping lists can be found in the businesses downtown, and … our local businesses are here year ’round and offer quality products and friendly service.”

WCA Home to hold ‘Gently Used Christmas Sale’

Forestville regular monthly leaf and brush pickup resumes

Today will be the last time for bulk leaf pickup for the residents of the village of Forestville.

After that the regular schedule for leaf and brush pickup on the first and third Tuesday of each month will resume starting Tuesday, Dec. 3. With the return to regular schedule, brush and leaves will need to be prepared appropriately to be picked up. Brush must be cut in 4-foot lengths and piled neatly at the curb one day prior to scheduled pickup. Leaves must be bagged and placed on the curb. Ditches are to be kept clear of leaves and brush.

Also, do not put pet waste in the leaf bags. Residents’ cooperation is appreciated.

Blood drive in Ellington Saturday

There will be a blood drive at the Ellington Fire Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This blood drive will be through Community Blood Bank of Erie. All donors needed that day to help with the upcoming shortage during the holidays.

Helicopter flight sparks concerns

Area residents may have noticed a helicopter hovering over parts of the city of Dunkirk on Wednesday, particularly in the vicinity of power lines.

National Grid told the OBSERVER the company contracts with a firm to monitor its lines and towers looking for broken or damaged insulators, clamps, cross arms and other equipment with the use of helicopters.

In addition, infrared scanners are also used to look for hotspots that might indicate a problem.

North Collins Board of Ed will hold special meetings

The North Collins Board of Education will host two special meetings this week. Today, the board will enter into executive session at 5:45 p.m. to conduct employment interviews for interim superintendent.

The board will also meet again at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday in executive session to conduct interviews. Both meetings will be held in the Library Media Center in the junior-senior high school at 2045 School St., North Collins.

Overnight parking ban in force

The winter overnight parking ban is in effect in the village of Silver Creek until April 1, 2014. Drivers are asked not to park on the street between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. This ban will be enforced by law enforcement.

Residents reminded about leaves

Silver Creek residents are reminded not to rake leaves into the road. The highway department will pick up brush along with the leaves as long as it is put in a separate container or bundled separately. Residents are asked not to mix leaves and brush.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on it’s campus, located at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m. Openings currently exist for residential and non-residential students seeking a career in healthcare or construction. The academy will accept young adults, age16-24, that are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career! Turkey party planned for Stockton Fire Company fundraiser Saturday

Stockton Volunteer Fire Company on Route 380 in Stockton invites the public to attend its annual fundraising Turkey Party on Saturday. The event starts at 8 p.m. and offers free refreshments including popcorn, sandwiches and cold beverages, along with a chance to win a huge turkey for a door prize. These are usually over 20 pounds. Stockton is the only fire company in the area to offer large fresh – not frozen – dressed birds as prizes.

Holiday Craft Show Saturday at the Moose Lodge in Gowanda

The Star Recorder Committee of the Gowanda Women of the Moose will host a Holiday Craft Show on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Moose Lodge 1382 located on 201 Aldrich St., Gowanda.

Some of the crafts featured this year will be quilting, fabric crafts, pen and ink, tole and decorative painting, gift baskets, ceramics, embroidery work, jewelry, chocolates, kitchen items and soaps.

Northern Chautauqua Landlord Association meeting Thursday

The NCLA will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at Bell Towers, 10 Ruggles St. in Dunkirk. Parking is available at the senior center on Franklin. Dunkirk Court Marshall Rick Mazurek will be the guest speaker. He will discuss proper eviction procedures, rules and the law. He will be glad to take questions. Membership in the association can be arranged at the meeting, which is open to all area landlords. There is now a path to membership in the Jamestown landlord group, which will be coordinating information about resources and tenant profiles on the Internet. This new development will make for stronger networking and reference checking. We encourage wide participation to discourage undesirable tenants and support responsible renters.

Chadwick Bay NYS Women meet Tuesday

On Tuesday, Chadwick Bay NYS Women, Inc. will host a program open to the public about palliative care and Hospice of Chautauqua County. The program will be held at the Dunkirk Moose Club located on Lake Shore Drive West. Light refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the program will start between 6:45 and 7 p.m. At that time, a representative from Hospice will explain what palliative care is, the services available through their organization for this type of care, and how it can be used in relation to concurrent treatments for those patients in need of such care.

Railroad crossings closing scheduled for repairs

Railroad crews will be making repairs to various crossing in the area during the next two weeks.

The town of Pomfret will have two crossing closed beginning Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 a.m. until Friday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. Van Buren Road and Berry Road will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossings for the repairs. Detours will not be posted.

The Middle Road crossing in the city of Dunkirk will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing beginning Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 a.m. until Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. A detour will be posted until the road is repaired.

JCC non-credit courses begin Dec. 3

Non-credit courses for personal and professional enrichment begin soon at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Courses include: Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, Part II, 6-8 p.m., Dec. 3 and 5 ($43); OSHA Hazard Communication Training for Supervisors, 8 a.m.-noon, Dec. 4 ($75); and OSHA Hazard Communication “Right to Know” Training for Employees, 1-3 p.m., Dec. 4 ($35).

A point/insurance reduction course is offered from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The fee is $35.

On Tuesday, Chadwick Bay NYS Women, Inc. will host a program open to the public about palliative care and Hospice of Chautauqua County. The program will be held at the Dunkirk Moose Club located on Lake Shore Drive West. Light refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the program will start between 6:45 and 7 p.m. At that time a representative from Hospice will explain what palliative care is, the services available through their organization for this type of care, and how it can be used in relation to concurrent treatments for those patients in need of such care.

Fredonia Police Chief Bradley Meyers is reminding village residents of the winter parking ban, which takes effect early Friday morning and ends on April 15, 2014. Pursuant to the parking ordinance, no individual may park on any public highway within the corporate limits of the village between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.

to hold 14th annual Craft Bazaar on Friday

The public is invited to attend when The Resource Center holds its 14th annual Craft Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at its Michael J. Raymond Center, 75 Jones & Gifford Ave. in Jamestown.

Crafts, baked goods and specialty coffees will be featured, and lunch items will be available for purchase. There will be prize drawings and a silent auction. ‘Dialogues’ to appear on Access Channel 5

“Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia. Hosted by Eileen Mowrey, the program will feature guest Andrew Dickson, a consultant with Chautauqua County Health Network and Creating Health Places who does walkability studies in local municipalities.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on Nov. 22.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

DFD run report

The Dunkirk Fire Department reports going on 155 runs in October, with 119 of those EMS runs which resulted in 50 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. There were 25 still alarms, nine box alarms and two mutual aid calls the DFD answered, according to Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Chuck Brininger as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Brininger is president of the Jamestown Coin Club. John Hamels will guest host.

The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television that has been recently autoscanned.

‘Cooking with Nick’ to air on Access Channel 5

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns for an all-new second season of cooking programs. The upcoming show is titled “Vegetables Up Front” and will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, beginning Saturday and ending on Nov. 22. Rizzo makes apples and mixed greens salad, garbanzo bean burgers with dill sauce, roasted vegetables with balsamic glaze and strawberry cream with chocolate drizzle for dessert. Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

The cable program is carried in the following communities: Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield. All cable viewers in the mentioned area can receive Access Channel 5, which is now digital. In the event that the channel no longer comes in, the subscriber should contact Time Warner Cable.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.53/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 5.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.20/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 34.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 11.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 17.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 26.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Leaf pickup in city starts Tuesday

The city of Dunkirk Public Works Department has announced leaf pickup will begin with a citywide sweep beginning Tuesday.

Leaves can be in bags or barrels or loose at the curb. If leaves are left loose at the curb, residents are asked to keep leaves clear of receivers and utility poles and out of the street. If leaves are in bags, residents are asked to leave the bags untied.

Leaves in bags or barrels will be picked up first and a crew will follow to pick up the loose leaves. Crews will begin in District C and go on to districts D, A and B.

Balloon Crew event today

The Balloon Crew Walk MS Team will hold a basket raffle fundraiser at The Holiday Craft and Gift Show today at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. This is the second year that the Balloon Crew will fundraise at the craft show. The Balloon Crew Walk MS Team is a friends and family team, sponsored by The Paper Factory. The Jamestown YMCA announces an upcoming date for the next YMCA babysitting clinic for boys and girls, ages 11-16. Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus, 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as GED classes to those in need of a diploma.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career;

Applicants can apply for on-center living or off center living, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Lupus meeting

The Lupus Alliance of Upstate New York will hold a new patient orientation meeting on Wednesday 6 at the Lupus Alliance office, 3871 Harlem Road in Cheektowaga from 6:30 to 8 p.m. All newly diagnosed lupus patients, their families and friends are welcome. Dunkirk Free Library

to host annual auction

The Dunkirk Free Library is preparing for its 23rd Annual Library Auction on Nov. 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Dunkirk Moose Club. The auction has been a popular event for the community and an important part of the library’s fundraising program.

Professional auctioneer Jim Tofil will again volunteer his time for the auction.

Donations will be accepted until Nov. 15. All proceeds from the auction go to support the Dunkirk Free Library and ensure community members access to books, DVDs, magazines, technology, computer classes, children’s programs, special events and much more. Join bookworms, library-lovers, and other community-minded locals at the Moose Club for a great night with an important purpose!

Fred Croscut to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Fred Croscut as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Croscut is a Chautauqua County legislator. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems for the following communities: Brocton, Cassada-ga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Fal-coner, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lake-wood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19.

The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television that has been recently autoscanned.

‘Cooking with Nick’ to air on Access Channel 5

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns for an all-new second season of cooking programs. The upcoming show is entitled “Marvelous Marsala.” The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, beginning Nov. 9, and ending on Nov. 15. Rizzo makes chunky vegetable soup, pork marsala, couscous salad and tortoni ice cream cups for dessert. Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

The cable program is carried in the following communities: Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield. All cable viewers in the mentioned area can receive Access Channel 5, which is now digital. In the event that the channel no longer comes in, the subscriber should contact Time Warner Cable.

‘Kidz Night Out’ set for Saturday

Family Martial Arts Center, 355 Central Ave., Fredonia, is hosting its monthly “Kidz Nite Out” on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. This activity is open to the community and is free to all children ages 5 and up.

“Kidz Nite Out” will include arts and crafts, a movie and refreshments. This month’s feature presentation will be Monsters University. All children must be dropped off by a responsible adult and the responsible adult must sign a release waiver prior to the event. Children should be picked up promptly at 8 p.m. at the conclusion of the event. “Kidz Nite Out” is sponsored by Family Video, Dunkirk Rent-a-Center and Dunkin’ Donuts.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 1.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.57/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.26/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Forestville Central to present ‘Brigadoon’

Lerner and Loewe’s “Brigadoon” is this year’s musical at Forestville Central School.

It is the story of two Am-erican hunters who stumble upon a quaint Scottish village that does not appear on their map. This time-traveling fantasy includes songs such as “Come to Me, Bend to Me” and “Almost Like Being in Love.” Kilts, bagpipes, swords and Scottish accents add to the show’s authenticity.

The elements of comedy, romance, dance, drama and suspense make for an enjoyable production suitable for all ages.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Forestville High School Auditorium on Academy Street.

All tickets are $7 at the high school office (965-2711) during school hours.

Tickets can also be purchased at the school before each performance.

North Collins board will meet tonight

A special meeting of the Board of Education of the North Collins Central School District will be held in the Library-Media Center Office in the Junior-Senior High School Building of the district, 2045 School St., North Collins, today at 6:30 p.m., for the purpose of resignation and appointment of personnel.

Town of Dunkirk to hold hearings

The Dunkirk Town Board will hold three public hearings Wednesday beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the Willow Road Town Hall. The first two hearings will be in regard to fire contracts with the West and East Town Fire Departments while the third hearing at 6:45 p.m. will be on the town’s preliminary budget. The hearings will be followed by a regular meeting of the Town Board at 7 p.m.

‘Skate Against Stroke’ at SUNY Fredonia Nov. 10

SUNY Fredonia will host “Skate Against Stroke” on Nov. 10 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Steele Hall Ice Arena. Proceeds will benefit The American Stroke Associa-tion. Admission is free for SUNY Fredonia students; $3 for children; and $4 for adults. Ice skate rentals are $4.

SUNY Fredonia to host handmade pottery sale today

Students and alumni from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at SUNY Fredonia will stage a sale of handmade pottery at the Williams Center Multipurpose Room today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The one-of-a-kind gift items have been glazed and are both dishwasher and microwave safe.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit current students and alumni, who will use the sale to raise money to meet living expenses, as well as the Dunkirk Friendly Kitchen. The sale is open to campus and community members.

Turkey Dinner Tuesday

The United Church in Ellicottville will hold an Election Day Turkey Dinner Tuesday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Take-outs are available. Diners are asked to use the Elk Street entrance to get to the church hall.

The village of Fredonia is starting bagged and loose leaf collection.

Loose leaves may be raked to the curb and bagged leaves placed at the curb. No brush or limbs will be collected at this time.

Residents are reminded that leaves may not be raked into the street at any time and fines for doing so are possible.

Fredonia Winter Farmers’ Market begins Saturday

The Fredonia Winter Farmers’ Market begins its indoor season Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. offering an abundance of locally grown and produced vegetables, fruits, herbs, meats, baked goods, maple syrup, honey, jams and jellies, as well as artisan quality craft goods. It is held in the Masonic Forest Lodge located at 321 W. Main St. (Route 20) in Fredonia.

The popular community pancake breakfast will again be sponsored by DeGolier’s Maple Products.

WMH Auxiliary Soup Supper Tuesday

The Westfield Memorial Hospital Regional Auxiliary will host a Soup Supper on Election Night (Tuesday) at the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield from 5-7 p.m.

On the menu will be 15 delicious homemade soups prepared by the WMH Auxiliary Board members. Those who attend may try one or all the soups. Refills are not limited, and members guarantee that no one will leave hungry! To round out the meal there will be bread, a beverage and homemade pie for dessert.

The cost of this “Chill-Chasing” meal is $7 for adults, $3 for children and $20 per family. All proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary’s ongoing projects at WMH.

Love INC to hold banquet Saturday

The sixth annual “Love in the Name of Christ Banquet and Live Auction” will be held on Saturday at the American Legion Post 409, 100 Legion Drive, Gowanda. This banquet and auction benefits the ongoing good works of Love INC of the greater Gowanda area. St. Joseph’s Church to host multiple-choir concert Sunday

The 23rd annual “The Harvest is Plentiful” Concert will take place at St. Joseph’s Church, 145 E. Main St. in Fredonia on Sunday at 6 p.m.

This concert is a joint effort of St. Joseph Church Voice and Handbell Choirs from Fredonia and Saints Columbia/Brigid Gospel Choir from Buffalo. The performance will be fun and inspirational for all ages. All are welcome; admission is free.

SUNY Fredonia Days of Service Nov. 2-9

One week, 20 projects, 500 volunteers. That is the slogan for SUNY Fredonia’s upcoming Days of Service Program, which is slated for Nov. 2 through 9.

Thousands of hours throughout the entire week will be spent by people giving back to local agencies who help others.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to volunteer.

The Silver Creek Village Board will begin its regular meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. for a public hearing on permit fee changes. A workshop and meeting will immediately follow.

Budget hearing on Tuesday

The Dunkirk Common Council has scheduled a public hearing on Mayor Anthony J. Dolce’s proposed 2014 budget for Tuesday at 5:20 p.m., prior to council’s regularly scheduled 5:30 p.m. meeting. Council meets today at 9 a.m. to start its review of the 2014 proposal. Councilwoman-at-Large Stephanie Kiyak will chair today’s meeting and said the public is allowed to attend.
