Meet the candidates for Fredonia Board

of Education May 15

The League of Women Voters will hold a Meet the Candidates Night on May 15 at 7 p.m. for the three people running for two Fre-donia Board of Education seats. The event will be held in Fredonia’s high school library.

Incumbent R. Thomas “Tom” Hawk, Cristina Geg-enschatz and Daniel Ihasz are the candidates running in this year’s election.

This event is free and open to all. Come question the candidates and decide how to vote.

Becky Jo Summers

certified as registered municipal clerk

Becky Jo Summers of the Town of Collins has been awarded Certification as Registered Municipal Clerk by the New York State Town Clerks Association for achieving its high educational, experience and participatory requirements.

Summers has been serving as Town Clerk since 2001, and is a member of the NYS Town Clerks Association.

She attained her designation as registered municipal clerk through a combination of numerous hours of education and leadership in various professional and civic organizations.

This statewide Certifica-tion Program was launched in 1997 in conjunction with the NYS Association of City and Village Clerks. The program aids municipal clerks in improving job performance and recognizes the professionalism of the Municipal Clerks office. Specific education and experience requirements must be achieved before this prestigious designation of Registered Municipal Clerk is awarded.

Qualifications of applicants are reviewed and approved by the NYS Town Clerks Certification Committee.

Jazzy Derby Party scheduled Saturday

The Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity will hold a Jazzy Derby Party Saturday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Samuel Cimino Silver Creek VFW Post 6472.

Tickets are $20 and include an evening of fun and chance, a barbecue meal prepared by Chef Matt Brunner, a run for the roses raffle with great prizes, live music by SUNY Fredonia Latin Jazz Ensemble and cash bar featuring well drinks, mint juleps, wine and beer. Be sure to wear your Derby hats and attire.

Jog for Jimmy Saturday

The fourth annual Jog for Jimmy will be held Satur-day at 10 a.m. The 5K fun run and walk will start at the Pine Valley Elementary School.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $10 for pre-registration and $15 the day of the race. A 50/50 drawing and silent auction will be held immediately after the race.

All proceeds will go directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Association for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research.

Spring rummage sale on Friday

The First United Presby-terian Church of Dunkirk Ladies’ Guild will hold its spring rummage sale Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at Westminster Hall, 410 Eagle St., Dunkirk.

Parking is available in the parking lot next to the church.

Money raised from the rummage sale will be used to support local, national and world missions.

Crouse 5K Challenge pre-registration

due by May 5

The 15th annual Crouse 5K Challenge is scheduled for May 9. The time for the 5K is 6 p.m. A 1/2 mile fun for children and a tot sprint will follow after the 5K is finished.

Participants must pre-register by May 5 to receive a shirt. Entry forms can be received through the website: gtownfit.com or contact Jennifer Gernatt (cell 860-8782) or email jengrnot@yahoo.com.

On the day of the race, registration and packet pickup starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Gowanda American Legion. The 5K is a U.S. Track & Field certified course.

Proceeds from the Chal-lenge benefit the Gowanda Central School Dennis Crouse Sr. Scholarship, Blue By U.(youth track club) and the Gowanda Sports Boosters.

Spring Fling Craft and Vendor Show Saturday

A sure sign of spring in the area is the return of the Spring Fling Craft and Vendor Show on Saturday at the Sheridan Community Center (formerly St. John Bosco Hall), 2773 Main Road, Sheridan, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will have a mix of hand-crafted gift booths and small home businesses from about 30 western New York vendors. Vendors will sell everything from jams to jewelry, blankets to beach glass, candles to candy, paper, wood glass and more. Small home business vendors include Tupperware, Thirty-One Gifts, Papa-razzi, Tastefully Simple and Mary Kay Cosmetics.

A $1 admission fee will benefit the American Can-cer Society. Refreshments will be available and will benefit the Lakeshore Humane Society.

Gowanda accepting recreation applications

The village of Gowanda is accepting applications for the summer recreation program. Applications can be picked up at the Gowanda Village Hall and must be returned by May 15.

United Senior Citizens monthly luncheon meeting May 12

The United Senior Citi-zens will hold their regular monthly luncheon meeting May 12 at the Fredonia Bea-ver Club at noon.

The menu is meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, bean casserole, bread, mixed tossed salad, coffee and dessert. The cost is $8 per person.

A representative from the Red Cross will be the guest speaker.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 3.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.83/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 13.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 10.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

Road closing

County Route 71 (Bard Road), between Griswold Road and Rood Road, is closed to all traffic until further notice due to road construction.

A detour will be posted as soon as possible.

Benefit fundraiser for Sylvia Corbett Mawhir Sunday

A benefit fundraiser is being planned on behalf of Sylvia Corbett Mawhir on Sunday at the John W. Dill Legion Post on Main Street in Brocton. Sylvia has been battling Adrenocortical Carcinoma since 2011.

The benefit includes a 2-mile walk for fun and a basket raffle. Participants are encouraged to design a T-shirt to wear to the walk incorporating the color teal, an awareness ribbon and the slogan “Strides for Sylvia.”

Prizes will be awarded for the most creative shirts. Walkers will receive a “Strides for Sylvia” wristband and a light lunch. Music will be provided by The Untouchables from 2 to 4 p.m. Face-painting will be available for the kids.

Walkers can pre-register by picking up a form at the Green Arch Restaurant in Brocton or by sending an email request to stridesforsylvia@gmail.com. You can also register the day of the benefit.

Registration will begin at noon at the Legion, and the walk will begin at 1 p.m. The registration fee is $10 per person and kids under 12 walk free. Donations can also be made at any Lake Shore branch for those unable to attend.

Sylvia, a Dunkirk High School graduate, currently resides in Brocton with her husband, Steve. They have two daughters, Kara and Katie.

Horse Plowing Festival Sunday

The 32nd Annual Horse Plowing Festival, sponsored by the Collins Draft Horse, Ox and Pony Club, will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wheater Road and Route 62, town of Collins.

The festival will feature working draft animals, a baked goods sale auction to benefit youth programs, crafts, a petting zoo, wagon rides, pony rides, a log skidding contest, sheep herding, demonstrations, stick horse races, a chicken barbecue catered by Wendel’s and live country music. No dogs are allowed on the premises.

Nina Morrison’s Chautauqua lecture to

air on Access Channel 5

Nina Morrison’s Chau-tauqua lecture “Freeing the Innocent” will be shown on Access Channel 5.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on May 9.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman and Westfield areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. Green Ribbon Gala Family Fun Fair Saturday

A Green Ribbon Gala Family Fun Fair is scheduled for Saturday at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, 219 Central Ave., Fredonia.

The free open house will be held from noon – 4 p.m.

Features will be door prize giveaways including a girl’s bike, a boy’s bike, and a handmade afghan; a free basket raffle; games; face painting and free food. Help recognize mental health awareness month and stamp out stigma.

Taylor Pancoast to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Taylor Pancoast as the guest on Saturday’s television program.

Dr. Pancoast will discuss the chemistry of high volume horizontal fracking. He is a chemistry professor at Jamestown Community College. The program will be guest-hosted by retired journalists Karen and Roy Harvey of Snowshoe Films.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Senior Report was conceived by Reed Powers and has aired on Access Channel 5 since 1995.

The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest.

Murray Hose Co. 4 meeting Monday

Murray Hose Company 4 will hold its monthly meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend. After the meeting, there will be the Swienconka (Easter food and blessing) at the Kosciuszko Club.

Services for all deceased members of Hose Company 4 will be held May 25 at Blessed Mary Angela Church Parish, St. Hedwig’s location. Mass will be held at 9 a.m. with breakfast to follow at the Kosciuszko Club.

Learn the basics about Alzheimer’s, dementia at Dunkirk Library

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a progressive and fatal brain disease that is the most common form of dementia.

“The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alz-heimer’s Disease” is a free class, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter, for anyone who would like to know more about the disease and related dementias. The class is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Dunkirk Free Library at 535 Central Ave.

Attendees will learn symptoms and effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, how Alzheimer’s affects the brain, causes and risk factors, how to find out if it’s Alzheimer’s disease, benefits of early detection, treatment and resources in your community, including the Alzheimer’ Association WNY Chapter

for book talk today about Western New York steelmaking

The history of Western New York Steel will be discussed at a book talk today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Japanese Garden Room in Reed Library.

SUNY Fredonia alumnus Spencer Morgan will discuss his recently published book, “Western New York Steel.” As a former curator for the Steel Plant Museum of Western New York, he will talk about the history of Western New York steel and reflect on the process of writing and assembling the material from his book.

Morgan graduated from Fredonia in 2008 with a degree in history.

Walking trails in Westfield

There are five measured walking trails in the Village of Westfield. They are pictured on signs in Moore Park and the Welch Field. The trails are marked with color coded signs. Maps are also available at the Village of Westfield window in the Eason Hall.

WACS Drama Club presents ‘The Princess and the Pauper: Manhattan’ today

On Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m., the Westfield High School Drama Club will be presenting an original play “The Princess and the Pauper: Manhattan” by senior Lucy Knappenberger in the Westfield School auditorium.

The story is a contemporary re-telling of the “Prince and the Pauper” fable and switches the lives of two young women Angie, a poor kind hearted girl, and Evangeline, a spoiled rich brat. As well, there is a bit of intrigue, counterfeiting and spying. The entire production from direction to set and lighting design has been done by Westfield students. The author and director, Lucy Knappenberger, is a senior at Westfield and has been accepted into the SUNY-Fredonia BFA program in acting. Admission is free.

Spaghetti and meatball benefit Saturday

for Mark Swanson

A spaghetti and meatball benefit for Mark E. Swan-son is scheduled Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Sinclairville Fire Hall, 30 Main St., Sinclairville. Swanson suffered a stroke in February that required emergency brain surgery.

The fundraiser has been organized by the Open Door Baptist Church of Cassada-ga. Dinners are $7 for age 13 and older, $4 for age 12 and under, and $7.50 for takeout.

Silver Creek Fire Department open house Saturday

The Silver Creek Fire Department will hold an open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire hall, 172 Central Ave., Silver Creek. Anyone thinking about being a firefighter, with questions, or who just want to look around is welcome to attend. There will be demonstrations of firefighting activities.

‘A FanTableous Fete’ reception and auction Sunday in Fredonia

The Fredonia Opera House “A FanTableous Fete” reception and auction will be held at The White Inn, 52 E. Main St.. Fredonia. Fourteen uniquely designed maple corner tables will be auctioned off. Bids on the tables will be accepted before the 5:30 p.m. Sunday reception/auc-tion as well as at the event.

To place an advance bid, bidders should email their name, phone number, name of the table they are bidding on and the bid amount to operahouse@fredopera.org. The bids are updated daily.

If bidders cannot attend the FanTableous Fete auction, the Opera House will make arrangements for them to attend and bid via telephone or for a proxy bidder.

Ferguson and Wise to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Jason Ferguson and Scott Wise as the guests on Saturday’s television program. Ferguson and Wise are with the Chautauqua Star. Revitalize Dunkirk will welcome city residents and other interested parties on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, main conference room, 214 Central Ave. in Dunkirk. The agenda will comprise updates of projects pending or underway including “Complete Streets” legislation for the city of Dunkirk, multi-use pathway extension, the “Main Street” grant, the Spoke Folk bicycle kiosk and community gardens.

Burkholder benefit

A benefit will be held for Iona Burkholder at the Stanley Hose Company Fire Department in Sherman on Saturday. Doors open at 1 p.m. and an Italian Pasta Bar will be served from 2-7 p.m. The Red Cross will be there to hold a Blood Drive in Iona’s honor. Each donor will receive a free tee shirt and gift card to Tops.

Iona was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January of this year after being rushed to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She will need to continue with chemotherapy treatment for the next 2 1/2 years. All proceeds will go to her family to help with medical and transportation costs.

Local bands donating their time to play at the benefit include: The Bogarts, Uncle Claud’s Band, and the Kingsfield Family Band. There will also be a special performance for the children by local artist Lindsey Hinger. There will be raffles, silent auctions of artwork and other items. Children’s activities are also scheduled. A special “Iona’s Army” T-shirts will be available to purchase at the benefit.

Support group for Alzheimer’s Caregivers in Jamestown

The Alzheimer’s Associa-tion Western New York chapter sponsors a Caregiver Support Group in Jamestown, which meets monthly. The group is designed to provide emotional and social support for caregivers and help participants develop methods and skills to solve problems. The groups encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical, and emotional health, as well as optimally care for the person with dementia.

The Gowanda Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house at its fire halls on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Main Hall at 230 Aldrich St. and the Hidi Hall on Beech Street will be open for the public to visit.

This is in conjunction with the 2014 statewide open house program organized by FASNY, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. This is their “Recruit New York 2014” program to recruit new members for the volunteer fire departments.

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 3.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.79/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.62/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m. CJC provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

The Academy will accept young adults age 16-24 who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Humane Society receives grant for pitbulls, pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has received a grant from PetSmart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

Dunkirk library seeks donations for sale

Donations are being accepted now until June 2 at the Dunkirk Free Library for the annual Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library summer book sale, to be held on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Gently-used and pre-loved books, magazines, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and cassette tapes will be appreciated. No textbooks, newspapers or encyclopedias can be accepted.

All proceeds from the book sale will be used for library programs and improvements.

Safety Village Easter Carnival Saturday

Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village presents its annual Easter Carnival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Children’s Safety Village, 2695 Route 394, Ashville (next to BOCES Hewes Education Center).

The Easter Parade will begin at noon. There will also be food and drinks for sale, candy and prizes including a grand prize drawing for a bike, face painting, kettle corn, a free child ID workshop, train rides, a silent auction, children’s crafts, cotton candy, carnival games including a corn hole playoff, nerf target shoot, ping pong toss and more.

The Easter bunny will make a visit for pictures with the children.

The cost of admission is $2 or free for children 2 and under.

Dayton to host dog enumeration

The town of Dayton will be conducting a dog enumeration from Monday through June 30. The dog enumerator will visit all town residences in the town of Dayton and village of South Dayton to identify the number of dogs at each residence.

In the event a dog is found to be unlicensed, the owner will be required to license that dog within 20 days of receipt of notice. Dogs found to be unlicensed or having an expired license during the enumeration period shall be subject to an $8 enumeration fee in addition to the regular license fee.

To license a dog, bring a current rabies certificate and proof of spay/neuter, if applicable, to the town clerk’s office at 9100 Route 62, South Dayton. Any questions contact the town clerk at 532-3758.

Fredonia church to sponsor 3,000 Easter egg hunt Saturday

Two years ago, Christ Community Church held a 1,000 Easter egg hunt. Last year the church increased that to a 2,000 egg hunt. Now this year, as part of its Easter celebration, the church, located at 219 Berry Road, Fredonia, will hold a 3,000 Easter egg hunt on the church grounds Saturday.

The egg hunt, which will take place at 11 a.m., is open to all children in the community fifth grade and under. Younger children will have their own area for the egg hunt.

Children will also get the chance to make a craft and get a snack.

Children should dress appropriately for the weather. If necessary the hunt will be moved indoors.

Fredonia church to sponsor 3,000 Easter egg hunt Saturday

Two years ago, Christ Community Church held a 1,000 Easter egg hunt. Last year the church increased that to a 2,000 egg hunt. Now this year, as part of its Easter celebration, the church, located at 219 Berry Road, Fredonia, will hold a 3,000 Easter egg hunt on the church grounds Saturday.

The egg hunt, which will take place at 11 a.m., is open to all children in the community fifth grade and under. Younger children will have their own area for the egg hunt.

Children will also get the chance to make a craft and get a snack.

Children should dress appropriately for the weather. If necessary the hunt will be moved indoors.

Safety Village holds Easter Carnival Saturday morning

Chautauqua Children’s Safety Education Village presents its annual Easter Carnival Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Children’s Safety Village, 2695 Route 394, Ashville (next to BOCES Hewes Education Center).

The Easter Parade will begin at noon. There will also be food and drinks for sale, candy and prizes including a grand prize drawing for a bike, face painting, kettle corn, a free child ID workshop, train rides, a silent auction, children’s crafts, cotton candy, carnival games including a corn hole playoff, nerf target shoot, ping pong toss and more.

The Easter bunny will make a visit for pictures with the children.

The cost of admission is $2 or free for children 2 and under.

Reed fundraising numbers released

Tom Reed’s campaign Tuesday released its final fundraising numbers for the first quarter of 2014. Reed received more than $392,000 from January through March, bringing the total raised in the cycle to almost $1.9 million.

The campaign’s first-quarter report shows almost $1.9 million raised in the cycle and over $1 million cash on hand.

Humane Society given grant for pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has re-ceived a grant from PetSmart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed. On-ly residents of Dunkirk, Fre-donia and Jamestown can receive grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

Jazzy Derby Party May 3

The Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity will hold a Jazzy Derby Party Saturday, May 3, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Samuel Cimino Silver Creek VFW Post 6472.

Hydrant flushing starts today in Westfield

The Village of Westfield Water Department will flush hydrants within the water district from today through May 2 (Monday-Friday) from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. They will be starting at the highest point (south) and proceed to the lowest end (north.)

The water will be slightly discolored and caution should be taken with regard to washing clothes. Despite the color, the water at no time will be unsafe to drink. Family Martial Arts Center offers self defense classes free

With the overwhelming demand for self defense, the Family Martial Arts Center has decided to host the free service so the community has the opportunity to learn techniques that will not only help them to feel safe but also allow them to be more confident in many choices.

The class will be offered Monday, April 14 and 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 and 23 from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and Saturday, April 19 and 26 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. for children ages 6 to 18. Registration will take place today from 9 a.m. to noon and Monday prior to class.

All students will receive equal attention and will be taught the fundamentals of the martial arts. In today’s world there is experiencing a higher percentage of peer pressure, bullying and crime. Family Martial Arts Center’s program is designed to help increase preparedness and awareness to escape these situations. And with the summer approaching, children are looking for activities. The program is designed to keep children active and yet educated in a disciplined sport. At the end of the program if they are interested in registering the center will offer a promotional package which includes a rate discount and a free uniform. FES to hold chicken dinner for pediatric cancer today

The Fredonia Elementary School will hold a benefit chicken dinner event today in the elementary cafeteria from 4 to 7 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit childhood pediatric cancer research and will help defray medical expenses for two students’ siblings that have been fighting pediatric cancer for several months, as well as a beloved elementary school teacher that has been diagnosed with cancer and has been out of school since Winter Break.

‘Noah’ – Jewish and Christian discussion Friday evening

Traveler advisory

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion said construction is scheduled to resume next week on the Route 5 & 20 bridge over Cattaraugus Creek in Erie and Chau-tauqua counties, and the Cattaraugus territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Motorists should expect to encounter a lane shift on Routes 5 and 20 in the vicinity of the bridge over Cattaraugus Creek. This shift is necessary to begin paving operations on the Chautauqua County side of the bridge. This work is expected to last for approximately 8 to 10 weeks, but may be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society has extended the deadline to register for its Family History Research Seminar. The reservation deadline is now April 15.

The event, believed to be the first of its kind for local residents, will focus primarily on free online resources and library databases. Featured speakers include research specialist Rhonda Konig from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and Norman Carlson from the Fenton Historical Society in Jamestown.

Hydrant flushing to begin in Westfield

The Village of Westfield Water Department will flush hydrants within the water district during the weeks April 14 through May 2 (Monday-Friday) from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

They will be starting at the highest point (south) and proceed to the lowest end (north.)

The water will be slightly discolored and caution should be taken with regard to washing clothes. Despite the color, the water at no time will be unsafe to drink.

The Water Department is sorry for any inconvenience that his may cause residents.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 0.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.73/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.55/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 9.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are unchanged versus a month ago.

The national average has increased 7.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 3.1 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Gowanda Board of Education petitions due April 21

Candidates wishing to run for office to fill three three-year terms on the Gowanda Board of Education must file a petition with the district clerk.

Each petition must be signed by a minimum of 25 qualified voters of the district and be filed with the district clerk by April 21.

Petitions may be filed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

$1,000 scholarship to be awarded

The Chautauqua County Fair has announced that 10 scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to current New York state high school seniors and also students enrolled in college.

The New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarships.

The qualifying students must be active at the Chautauqua County Fair. All applicants from Chautauqua County must submit their application through the Chautauqua County Fair no later than Tuesday.

Sheridan Historical Society Spring Auction and Basket Raffle Fundraiser Saturday

The Sheridan Historical Society is preparing for its Spring Auction and Basket Raffle Fundraiser to be held Saturday at the Town of Sheridan Community Cen-ter. Regional College Fair will be held at SUNY Fredonia Wednesday

SUNY Fredonia and the New York State Association for College Admissions Counseling will host a NYSACAC Regional College Fair on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

The event is free and high school students are especially encouraged to attend. College students, community members, faculty and staff are also welcome.

Representatives of more than 60 colleges will be attending and there will also be a financial aid presentation during the event. The event is planned to serve as a helpful source to start planning for college.

CCWA was formed pursuant to Resolutions 211-13 and 246-13 of the Chautauqua County Legislature to evaluate water supply needs in northern Chautauqua County and recommend to the County Legislature the creation of County water district(s) as may be necessary in the best interest of the people of Chautauqua County.

The purpose of this meeting of CCWA is to present options for the regional water system implementation plan followed by discussion and potential action for option selection.

Free dresses available today and Sunday

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon, Urban Valet Dry Cleaners and Performing Arts Dance Academy announce the dates for the 5th annual Prom Dress Drive Shopping Days.

Local high school girls are invited to attend the shopping event to find a free gown for prom or other special event from 3 to 6 p.m. today or noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, at Performing Arts Dance Academy, 206 Lake St., Hamburg.

Thanks to the generosity of the community, hundreds of dresses have been donated. The gowns were cleaned thanks to Urban Valet Dry Cleaners to be ready for the big dance or event.

A variety of sizes, colors and styles will be available. All high school age girls are welcome to attend to choose one gown each. Attendees will be allowed into the shopping area on a first-come, first-served basis. Handmade beaded earrings, jewelry and shoes will also be available, for free.

The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will host a seminar focusing on researching Family History on April 26. The event will help people learn more about various free, online resources that can be used when researching their own family history. It will also provide important things to know when doing online research. Featured speakers include research specialist Rhonda Konig from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and Norman Carlson from the Fenton Historical Society in Jamestown.

The daylong event will be run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Dunkirk on April 26 and will include morning refreshments and a lunch buffet. Regional College Fair will be held at SUNY Fredonia on April 9

SUNY Fredonia and the New York State Association for College Admissions Counseling will host a NYSACAC Regional College Fair on April 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Steele Hall Fieldhouse.

The event is free and high school students are especially encouraged to attend. College students, community members, faculty and staff are also welcome.

Representatives of more than 60 colleges will be attending and there will also be a financial aid presentation during the event. The event is planned to serve as a helpful source to start planning for college.

The Sheridan Historical Society is preparing for its Spring Auction and Basket Raffle Fundraiser to be held April 12 at the Town of Sheridan Community Center. The society is seeking donations of furniture, collectibles, tools, household and other items of interest (no appliances or clothing.) $1,000 scholarship to be awarded

The Chautauqua County Fair has announced that 10 scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded to current New York state high school seniors and also students enrolled in college. The New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and the New York Showpeople’s Association sponsor the scholarships.

The qualifying students must be active at the Chautauqua County Fair. All applicants from Chautauqua County must submit their application through the Chautauqua County Fair no later than April 8.

TCC Celebrating National Public Health Week April 7 to 11

For nearly two decades, public health professionals have united communities nationwide each April to celebrate National Public Health Awareness Week. DFD March run report

The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 155 runs in March, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 126 emergency medical service runs resulting in 35 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 12 still alarms, 15 box alarms and two mutual aid calls.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 0.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.73/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.53/g.

on Access Channel 5

David Brooks’ Chautau-qua lecture “Moral Genius-es” will be shown on Access Channel 5.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on April 11.

MaryAnn Spanos to appear on Senior Report Saturday morning

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have MaryAnn Spanos as the guest on Saturday’s television program.

Dr. Spanos is director for the Chautauqua County office for the aging. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out.

The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cas-sadaga, Chautauqua, Fre-donia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forest-ville, Hanover, Irving, James-town, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19.

The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned.

Programming from Access Channel 5 (channel 21.4 on a QAM digital TV) is also aired each evening in the Town of Hanover on cable channel 12 (channel 98.3 on a QAM digital TV).

County Water Agency will meet on April 10

There will be a meeting of the Chautauqua County Water Agency on April 10 at 7 p.m. at the Silver Creek Central School High School Cafeteria, 1 Dickinson St., Silver Creek.

CCWA was formed pursuant to Resolutions 211-13 and 246-13 of the Chautau-qua County Legislature to evaluate water supply needs in northern Chautauqua County and recommend to the County Legislature the creation of county water district(s) as may be necessary in the best interest of the people of the county.

The purpose of this meeting of CCWA is to present options for the regional water system implementation plan followed by discussion and potential action for option selection.

Humane Society given grant for pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has re-ceived a grant from Pet-Smart Charities to spay/-neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

Forestville kindergarten, pre-school registrations

Forestville Central School has set its kindergarten roundup date for April 24 at 1 p.m.

Children who will be 5 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 are eligible for kindergarten. Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 are eligible for pre-school. At this time, any parent who has not yet contacted the district, and has a child who falls into either of these categories, should call the elementary office at 965-2742.
