Training series for tutors scheduled

Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County is offering a new training series for tutors. The series of classes will take place on June 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Many adults in Chautauqua County need help to increase their literacy skills and better their quality of life. Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County provides free, one-on-one adult literacy tutoring services. In order to do this important work, tutor volunteers are needed.

Anyone interested in tutoring should stop at the Literacy Volunteers bookstore at 21 E. Second St. (Washington Ave. entrance), Dunkirk on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. to pick up an application or to get more information.

Food handler class set for June 16

The next Chautauqua County certified food handler class will be held Monday, June 16, at Jamestown Community College North, Room 119, 10807 Bennett Rd., Dunkirk.

Registration and sign-in is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Preregistration is required. Call 753-4693. The cost for the class is $35 for profit/$20 non-profit organizations.

DHS Class of 1954 luncheon Tuesday

The Dunkirk High School Class of 1954 will hold its monthly luncheon meeting at Applebee’s Restaurant, 3908 Vineyard Drive, Dunkirk on the first Thursday of the month, June 5, at 11:30 a.m.

Bike safety part of June 7 event

Spring is fast approaching and shortly there will be bicyclists through Dunkirk and Fredonia. Hopefully those bicyclists are riding with the traffic flow, obeying all traffic laws, yielding to traffic when it’s appropriate, being predictable and alert, watching for parked cars and looking before they are turning.

Last year the Putnam Record Insurance Agency teamed up with numerous community partners and presented their first annual Safety Saturday. Rich Goodman from Spoke Folk educated participants on bicycle safety and the tradition will continue on June 7 at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds Floral Hall Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join the Putnam Record Insurance Agency and their community partners for a fun educational community event. There will be hourly giveaways, hot dogs, juice and numerous demonstrations.

Valley Historical Society to hold meeting

The next regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be June 3 at 7 p.m. in the museum at the corner of Lestor and Main streets in Sinclairville.

Catherine McAllister, Director of Empire State College, will present a program on the Brotherhood of New Life, a religious organization based in Portland in the 19th Century.

Attic & Seller Days deadline nears

The 20 Miles of Attic and Seller Days will be held June 6, 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Signups begin at Chau-tauqua County Chamber of Commerce, 10785 Bennett Road, Dunkirk; Fredonia Chamber of Commerce, 35 E. Main St., Fredonia; and the White Inn, 52 E. Main St., Fredonia during normal business hours. The fee is $5, which includes a listing on “THE MAP” and 2 posters for the sale. Participants may list 5 specific items of interest for an additional $1 per line, with a limit of 25 items. The deadline is Saturday. Late registration is $7 with no guarantee of map listing.

Yard Sale/Plant Sale Friday in Ripley

Lakeshore Humane Society Pet Adoption Day/Open House

Barker Library Open House/Reception Saturday in Fredonia

The D.R. Barker Library will hold an Open House/Reception at 7 Day St., Fredonia, on Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon. The event will welcome Sara Hart, the new library director, and Casey Casser-ta, new children’s librarian.

There will be opportunities to register for summer children’s programs and visit a surprise addition to the children’s room. Re-freshments will be served.

Fredonia History Days set for July 18-19

Festivals Fredonia has announce its first festival of 2014 – Fredonia History Days on July 18 and 19.

All area historical agencies and historians are welcome to host a booth in the local history tent on July 19 at no charge to help share history with visitors. All that is required is to contact Fredonia History Days chairman Todd Langworthy at 679-9436 or by email at todd.langworthy@excite.com by July 1.

New this year will be a local author’s tent on July 19, which is designed to give all local authors of historical books the opportunity to share their work with the public. They will also be given the opportunity to be a part of a Saturday morning lecture on a topic of their work. Local historical authors are invited to participate at no charge in an effort to help share history with festival visitors.

Authors should contact Langworthy as well to reserve their spot and set up a lecture if they wish. The preliminary schedule for the Fredonia History Days weekend is available at www.festivalsfredonia.com. Festivals Fredonia is also on Facebook, so top by and give it a “like.”

Kernal Kirisci’s Chautau-qua lecture “Is Turkey Still a Model for the Middle East?” will be shown on Access Channel 5.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on June 6.

Terri Kindberg to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report will have Terri Kindberg as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Kindberg’s topic is the Children’s Safety Village. The program will be hosted by John Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. Senior Report was conceived by Reed Powers and has aired on Access Channel 5 since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy informational session this morning

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga today at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training is available in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

CJCA will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Towel Bingo Night Friday in Forestville

Hydrant flushing on Berry, Chestnut roads

The village of Fredonia will be doing hydrant flushing beginning tonight and ending Friday morning on Berry Road and Chestnut Road. This will affect the residents in these water districts that are in the town of Pomfret. Residents may ex-perience water discoloration and low pressure, among other possible issues.

Gas price unchanged

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.80/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 1 cent per gallon in the last week to $3.63/g.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester in the past week, prices Sunday were 9.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 3.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has fallen 2.0 cents per gallon in the last month and is 2.1 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Lifeguard

re-certification class scheduled

The Dunkirk City Pool is sponsoring a Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification course on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The course will cover lifeguarding re-certification, CPR/AED and first aid. The class size will be capped at 10 participants.

Participants will need to bring a breathing barrier and are to be prepared for classroom instruction and pool instruction.

Participants need to meet in the Dunkirk Pool foyer area no later than 8 a.m.

The cost is $35 cash and will be paid the day of instruction.

OSC representatives will be at Hollywood Happening

Representatives from State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office will be at the annual Hollywood Happening on Friday and Saturday at the Hollywood Theater, Main Street, Gowanda.

Residents will be able to find out if they are owed some of New York state’s $12.5 billion in unclaimed funds.

Representatives from DiNapoli’s office will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

Regional Economic Development Council meeting Thursday

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote economic development and community engagement in the region, SUNY Fredonia’s Division of Engagement and Econ-omic Development will host the Western New York Regional Economic Devel-opment Council’s regular meeting followed by a New York State Consolidated Funding Application workshop.

The dual events are scheduled for Thursday in the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia.

The public is invited to both events, and preregistration is requested for the NYS Consolidated Funding Application workshop.

The Fredonia and Dun-kirk Chambers of Com-merce will host Attic and Seller Days in the village of Fredonia and the city of Dunkirk on June 6, 7 and 8.

To be part of the program, you will need to contact your local Chamber office at 679-1565 in Fredonia (Team Era Office, Eagle and Main Street), and 366-6200 in Dunkirk (JCC North).

To register, fill out the form indicating your address to be listed, and any additional items you want listed in the ad at an additional cost.

The basic listing cost is $5, and $1 per line for additional items. Deadline is Saturday.

Also fill out what days your sale is taking place, your name, phone number and any other information requested.

You will be given an Attic and Seller Day Sign to be placed at the location of the sale, besides being listed on the map.

Maps with all sale addresses will be on sale at the Chamber offices starting Wednesday, June 4 at a cost of $2 per map.

Veterans are invited to march during the Memorial Day parade, which begins at 11 a.m. today, in the city of Dunkirk.

For all veterans able to walk, Dennis Mulkin, commander of American Legion Post 62, has recommended one combined unit/honor guard, to be referred as “All Veterans Honor Guard” to lead our 1st Division.

All veterans unable to walk and wishing to participate, transportation will be provided by C.A.R.T.S. during the parade and returning them to Memorial Park at the completion of the parade.

If you are able to join us, please contact Jack Sievert, commander DJVC, at 366-4082. He will need your full name and phone number.

Please specify if you can walk the parade route in our Veterans Honor Guard or need to be driven in provided transportation. Every veterans organization is working the council to support this event.

Silver Creek CSD announces pre-k and kindergarten registration dates

Pre-kindergarten registration for children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2014 and live in the Silver Creek District will be held on Thursday and Friday.

Kindergarten registration and screening will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday for children who are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2014.

Students currently en-rolled in this school year’s Universal Pre-K Program do not need to register.

ZUMBATHON set for Saturday

Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 will host a ZUMBATHON on Saturday in the St. Hyacinth’s gym on Lake Shore Drive in Dunkirk from 1 to 3 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Zumba instructors Lisa Maslak, Sue Chaffee, Janet Kozlowski, Jean Sutton and Ricky Cooper will lead the Dance Against Cancer.

Presale tickets are $8 and $10 for tickets sold at the door. Tickets may be purchased from any of the above instructors, any Lucky 777 team member or by calling Janet at 366-1366. There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing.

All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Cassadaga Valley kindergarten and pre-k enrollment underway

Enrollment is under way for the District’s Kinder-garten and Universal Pre-Kindergarten 2014-2015 programs at Sinclairville Elementary School.

The UPK Program is available to children who will be four years old on or before Dec. 1, 2014. Parents/guardians of children who meet this age requirement should have received the enrollment forms in the mail. If you have not received the enrollment forms, please call one of the contacts below. There are no income eligibility restrictions for families residing within the school district.

Parents/guardians of children eligible to start kindergarten in the fall, who are not currently enrolled in our UPK program, are encouraged to register their child for school as soon as possible. This applies to children who will be five years old on or before Dec. 1, 2014.

Information and enrollment forms can be picked up or mailed by contacting Mrs. Warsitz in the High School at 962-8581, ext. 158, or Mrs. Gierlinger at the Elementary School at 962-5195, ext. 304.

Dunkirk Memorial Unit #62 Poppy Days proclaimed

Dunkirk Mayor Anthony J. Dolce has proclaimed Dunkirk Memorial Unit #62 Poppy Days in the city.

“WHEREAS, members of Dunkirk Memorial Unit #62 are striving to aid the rehabilitation of veterans and their children; and WHEREAS, this unit is raising funds for this worthy cause by selling poppies to the public on May 23rd through May 25th; and WHEREAS, the poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain,” Dolce stated in the proclamation. “WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary has pledged to remind American’s each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered,” .

The Poppy Days run through Monday.

Retreat for women living with breast cancer diagnosis

The Sisterhood Wellness Center, Inc., an organization for those women living with a breast cancer diagnosis, will accept applications postmarked no sooner than May 30 and no later than June 21 for the 27th weekend retreat Sept. 26-28. This is a 2-night, 3-day (including meals) stay at Holiday Valley’s Tamarack in Ellicottville. The program includes fitness, crafts and other activities. Participants will enjoy the many facilities, pampering and the programs. Fees are based on a sliding scale according to income.

The mission statement of SWC is to provide an environment for breast cancer survivors to promote physical, emotional and spiritual healing through recreation, association and education. Forestville to host human trafficking presentation tonight

The Forestville Central School District will host a presentation on human trafficking tonight at 7 p.m. The presentation will take place in the High School auditorium. The presentation will feature a video from Hope International and presentations from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, an FBI agent working with Homeland Security and a local teen who has experienced the “grooming process” for trafficking first hand. The event is open to the public.

Two roads reopened

According to the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities, two roads have been opened.

Stow Road (CR631) in the town of North Harmony, between Open Meadows and Morley Roads is now open.

Kabob Road (CR342), between Route 380 and Waterman Road in the town of Stockton is now open.

Humane Society has grant for pitbulls,

pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has received a grant from PetSmart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 1.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.80/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.62/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 12.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 1 cent per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has not moved during the last month and stands 5.0 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Fredonia-Dunkirk Chambers of Commerce annual Attic and Seller Days June 6-8

The Fredonia and Dunkirk Chambers of Commerce will be hosting Attic and Seller Days in the village of Fredonia and the city of Dunkirk on June 6, 7 and 8. To be part of the program, you will need to contact your local Chamber office at 679-1565 in Fredonia (Team Era Office, Eagle and Main Street), and 366-6200 in Dunkirk (JCC North).

To register, fill out the form indicating your address to be listed, and any additional items you want listed in the ad at an additional cost. The basic listing cost is $5, and $1 per line for additional items. Deadline is May 31. Also fill out what days your sale is taking place, your name, phone number and any other information requested. You will be given an Attic and Seller Day Sign to be placed at the location of the sale, besides being listed on the map. Maps with all sale addresses will be on sale at the Chamber offices starting Wednesday, June 4 at a cost of $2 per map.

Water line work today

The Dunkirk Public Works Water Maintenance Division will work on the water leak at the southwest corner at the intersection of Route 5 (Lake Shore Drive East) and Route 60 (Main Street) this morning.

Traffic lanes will be closed and traffic redirected for several days. Motorists are advised to use caution in this area, which will be marked with flashers and have safety zones.

Forum on high

volume horizontal hydrofracking June 10

The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County cordially invites the public to attend a forum on high volume horizontal hydrofracking at 7 p.m. on June 10 in room 105, Fenton Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

While the League of Women Voters has a position in favor of continuing the statewide moratorium, it believes that the public should form its own opinion based on a presentation of the facts, controversial though they be.

The forum on June 10 will consist of a balanced group of presenters. David Colli-gan is an independent lawyer from Buffalo who specializes in energy issues. John Holko and Tim Hull are energy company executives. Kim Sherwood is an hydrologist working in Chautauqua County, and Glenn Wahl represents Cattaraugus-Chautauqua for Clean Water. The forum will be moderated by Professor David Rankin, Chair of Political Science at SUNY Fredonia.

Admission is free and open to all. There will be opportunities for the panelists to question one another and to answer questions from the audience.

Fredonia Fire Dept. March run report

The Fredonia Fire Department has released its run report for the month of March.

Crews handled a total of 147 calls, with 85 of those calls in the village of Fredonia, 34 in the town of Pomfret, 19 at SUNY Fredonia, seven mutual aid calls and two calls at the New York State Thruway.

Breaking the calls down by type, 106 were for rescue and emergency medical services, 19 false alarms, eight good intent calls, six fires, four service calls, three hazardous conditions with no fires and one rupture/explosion with no fire.

Fredonia Mayor declares Annual Firemen’s Fund Drive Weeks

Fredonia Mayor Stephen Keefe issued a proclamation declaring the Annual Firemen’s Fund Drive Weeks to be May 23-30 and June 7-12.

Keefe urges businesses during the week in May and citizens of the village during the week in June to support the Fredonia Fire Department’s annual fund drive.

“These firemen give their time and efforts unselfishly for the protection of life and property within the village,” the proclamation states. “Citizens of the village of Fredonia owe a debt of gratitude to the volunteer fire department of this village. The village of Fredonia takes great pride in its exceptionally fine fire department.”

Detour to begin today

The City of Dunkirk Public Works Department has been notified by the contractor for Millennium Parkway that beginning today, South Roberts Road between Talcott Street and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks will be closed for one to two weeks.

Chautauqua Institution to hold ‘sneak peek’ program at Incubator

Chautauqua Institution invites area residents to a 2014 season sneak peek program at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator.

The Rev. Robert Frank-lin, new director of Chau-tauqua’s Department of Religion, will introduce him-self to the broader Chautau-qua community and share his vision for religious life at the Institution.

John Shedd and Ryan Kiblin, directors of facilities and grounds, will provide an update on the Institution’s $33 million Amphitheater project and efforts to protect Chautauqua Lake.

The program will close with an invitation for Chautauqua County neighbors to visit Chautauqua Institution this summer, sharing five great ways to partake in Chautauqua’s 2014 program and initiatives.

A reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvres begins at 5 p.m. The hour-long program, with Q-and-A, follows at 5:30 p.m.

Walk MS Day May 18 in Fredonia

Village of Fredonia Mayor Stephen Keefe has officially proclaimed May 18 as “Walk MS Day.”

Residents will gather in the village, and participate in the Northern Chautauqua Walk to raise funds for multiple sclerosis, which affects over 3,800 individuals in western New York.

Fredonia to begin picking up yard waste Monday

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning Monday.

Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once.

Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m., Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material at this time.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place leaves and grass into the street at any time.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice. Please remember to empty your bags.

Fredonia to begin picking up yard waste Monday

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning Monday.

Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once.

Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material at this time.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place leaves and grass into the street at any time.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice. Please remember to empty your bags.

The cooperation of residents is greatly appreciated.

Mother/Child Dinner at Laona

The Laona United Methodist Church will be holding their annual Mother/Child dinner on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Laona Church on the corner of Wilson Road and Porter.

Food Express Truck change this month

The Brocton-Portland area has announced that there is a change of location for the Food Express Truck this month. For May only, the food for eligible participants will be distributed at the Portland Fire Department located on Route 20. Food will not be distributed at the West Portland Baptist Church this month. Detour set to begin Monday

The City of Dunkirk Public Works Department has been notified by the contractor for Millennium Parkway that beginning Monday, South Roberts Road between Talcott Street and the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks will be closed for one to two weeks.

Detour signs will be posted and motorists are advised to use caution.

Stockton Townwide Cleanup this weekend

The Town of Stockton is having its 10th Townwide Clean Up this year on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. Deliver trash to the Highway Department Storage Building at 4696 W. Railroad Ave. Appliances, trash, and junk only; no garbage, liquid waste, paint, oils, batteries, computers or appliances containing freons will be accepted. Only Stockton or Cassadaga Residents can participate. Cassadaga Job Corps will have 10 children helping in groups of three. This is their fourth year getting involved in townwide cleanup.

WNY Outlaws acquire SubZero All-Stars

The WNY Outlaws All-Stars cheerleaders, who established themselves locally during the 2013-14 season with the addition of WNY Outlaws “West” team in Fredonia, are pleased to announce that as of May 1, their program has expanded to include the addition of the SubZero All-Stars based in Lancaster. SubZero All-Stars will adopt the WNY Outlaw All-Stars signature black, red and white as a result of a recently finalized acquisition agreement. The Lancaster facility will be renamed WNY Outlaw All-stars and will begin rebranding all merchandise, signage and other collateral.

This will represent the third location in the Buffalo/Southern Tier area for the Outlaws, complementing the Clarence Center and Fredonia gyms.

Both the Clarence Center and Fredonia locations have grown to over 270 athletes this season and sent two level 5 teams to Cheerleading Worlds. All three locations will continue under the direction of the WNY Outlaw All-Stars owners and board of directors.

The WNY Outlaws West program is currently based in Fredonia and will hold signups at 183 E. Main St. (in the back of the Infinity Dance building) on the following dates: Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m.

Fredonia Farmers’ Market begins 11th season Saturday

The Fredonia Farmers’ Market begins its outdoor season on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. offering an abundance of locally grown and produced vegetables, fruits and herbs, meats, baked goods, maple syrup, honey, jams and jellies, as well as artisan quality craft goods. The market is located on Church Street adjacent to Barker Common in downtown Fredonia.

Newly incorporated as an independent, not-for-profit organization, the Fredonia Farmers’ Market works to feature local family farms, artisans, and other entrepreneurs as well as feature entertainment and educational opportunities for the community each Saturday morning May through October. Local family farms opening the market season include County Line Farm, DeGolier’s Maple Products, Gong Gardens, J.M. Joy Farms, Lamberton Hollow Farm, Roo Haven Farm, Seybold Stand, Small Meadows Farm and Busti Cider Mill, Someday Maybe Farm, and Toboggan Hill Farm. Craft vendors opening the season include Ceres Farm, Lake District Baskets, Designs by Ginger and Zosias.

Northern Chautauqua Walk MS Sunday

The Northern Chautauqua Walk MS will be held Sunday at Russell Joy Park, 105 Howard St., Fredonia.

Registration and check-in starts at 9 a.m. The walk steps off at 10 a.m.

Choose from a 1-mile accessible route, a 3-mile, or 5-mile route. Face painting and costume characters will entertain the kids.

Music will be provided by Brian Boedo of B.B. Entertainment. Gary Damico of P&G Foods will be cooking hot dogs donated by Sahlen’s for a picnic lunch after the walk. A silent auction is planned to benefit the Independence Fund at the Upstate New York Buffalo office for use in the Northern Chautauqua community.

Prizes will be given out to the top three fundraisers and the two people who wear the most orange; the official color for MS, in the most creative way to raise awareness of the disease. Sheriff’s Employees Benevolent Association taking applications for scholarship award

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Employees Benevolent Association is taking applications for its 2014 scholarship award in the amount of $500. This scholarship is available to any high school senior who is planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field and is limited to law enforcement only. You must be a resident of Cattaraugus County to qualify for the award.

Any interested person should contact the guidance office in their school for an application and further information. The applications should be postmarked no later than June 2.

Chang Hu Park cleanup

The village of Gowanda will clean up Chang Hu Park Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed and should bring gardening tools with them. Volunteers should meet at Chang Hu Park at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided thanks to a donation from La Via Pizzeria. If the weather is nice, flower planting will take place the following weekend.

Walk for Life June 8 in Gowanda

The Tri-County Crisis Pregnancy Center of Gowanda will hold its annual Walk for Life on June 8, beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the Gowanda Free Methodist Church in Gowanda.

Walkers of all ages are invited to participate and ask their friends, relatives and neighbors to sponsor their Walk for Life.

All funds received will be used to continue the work of the center in reaching out to women with crisis pregnancies. The center’s free services include peer counseling, pregnancy testing, pre-natal vitamins, baby clothes, baby furniture, project Rachel, and referrals for additional services.

Fundraiser for ‘wheels’

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for “Anthony’s Wheels” will be from noon to 5 p.m. on June 8 in the Masonic Lodge on Main Street. The event benefits 16-year-old Anthony Shuart, who suffered a traumatic brain injury at birth, causing a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

In an effort to keep An-thony at home, “Anthony’s Wheels” is hoping to raise $18,000 for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

Wheels for Anthony fundraiser tickets currently on sale

Tickets for a fundraiser for a local teenager to be held in June are on sale. Tickets for a spaghetti dinner on June 8 from 12 to 4 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, East Main Street, Fredonia are on sale at Coughlan’s Pub, 47 W. Main St., and Cutting Crew, 9 Eagle St., in Fredonia and Main Wine and Spirits, 174 E. Fourth St., in Dunkirk. Tickets are $10 and a chance to win a door prize is available with pre-sale tickets.

All proceeds will benefit 16-year-old Anthony, who was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Since Anthony is growing, it is nearly impossible for him to be transported into and out of a vehicle so a new wheelchair van is needed.

The dinner will include spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread, ice cream and a beverage. There will be a silent auction including an autographed CJ Spiller of the Buffalo Bills photo and an autograph hockey puck by Alex Sulzer of the Buffalo Sabres.

The speaker will be Dr. Andrea Zevenbergen, associate professor in the psychology department from SUNY Fredonia. She will present parent-child shared reading to improve language skills of children with receptive and expressive language delays. Also discussed will be modifications to meet the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.

“Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia. The next program will feature guest Bob Fritzinger. Fritzinger is the director of the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator and brings over 20 years of business experience in the creation, development, day-to-day management, financing and sale of multiple high-technology companies to the position.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 1:25 p.m. and 7:25 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on May 23.

Crafters sought for ‘Fly-In’ event

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga Thursday at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training is available in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

CJCA accepts young ad-ults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

The League of Women Voters will hold a Meet the Candidates Night on Thursday at 7 p.m. for the three people running for two Fredonia Board of Education seats. The event will be held in Fredonia’s high school library.

Incumbent R. Thomas “Tom” Hawk, Cristina Gegenschatz and Daniel Ihasz are running in this year’s election.

Habitat for Humanity will hold a Donation Day Saturday

Habitat for Humanity will hold a Donation Day for ReStore, a retail outlet that resells all donations in order to raise money for Habitat’s homebuilding efforts for working families in need of decent, affordable housing. This donation drive will take place at Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church, 64 Buffalo St., Silver Creek, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Items that will be accepted include large and small appliances (good working order and less than 10 years old), furniture, building materials, hardware, electrical materials and fixtures, housewares, plumbing fixtures and supplies, windows and doors, landscaping materials and equipment.

Dunkirk library seeks donations for sale

Donations are being accepted now until June 2 at the Dunkirk Free Library for the annual Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library summer book sale, to be held on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gently-used and pre-loved books, magazines, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and cassette tapes will be appreciated. No textbooks, newspapers or encyclopedias can be accepted. All proceeds from the book sale will be used for library programs and improvements.

Humane Society receives grant for pitbulls, pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has re-ceived a grant from Pet-Smart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dun-kirk, Fredonia and James-town can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call 665-2209 ext. 205. Time and funds are limited, so those wishing to take advantage of the grant funds should schedule as soon as possible.

Support group meets Wednesday

The Parents for Parents support group will meet on Wednesday, May 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Connections North Center, 10825 Bennett Road (Route 60) Dunkirk. The speaker will be Dr. Andrea Zevenbergen, associate professor in the psychology dept. from SUNY Fredonia. She will present parent-child shared reading to improve language skills of children with receptive and expressive language delays. Also discussed will be modifications to meet the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. The regular support group will meet following the presentation. New members are welcome. County Route 47 (Touring Route 93) Silver Creek-South Dayton Road between Route 39 and James Road in the town of Hanover is now open to all traffic. The road was re-opened on Friday.

Chang Hu Park cleanup scheduled

The village of Gowanda will be cleaning up Chang Hu Park on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed and should bring any gardening tools with them. Volunteers should meet at Chang Hu Park at 10 a.m. Lunch will be provided thanks to a donation from La Via Pizzeria. If the weather is nice, flower planting will take place the following weekend. Rep. Tom Reed’s staff will hold office hours Friday, May 16 in the city of Dunkirk. Art show set

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m. CJC provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.83/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.64/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 15.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 10.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 9.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 13.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Dayton Town Board meeting change

Lighthouse Ghost Tours begin Saturday

Several Ghost Tours will be held at the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum this summer sponsored by the Fredonia Ghost Hunters. Crouse 5K Challenge

Everyone is welcome to join The Chautauqua Hik-ing Club for a get out and stretch hike. This will be a relatively short hike, about three miles.

LWV hosts Horrigan on Tuesday

On Wednesday, County Executive Vincent Horrigan will speak to the League of Women Voters on the economic future of the county and the steps he plans to take in furthering it. The occasion is the annual meeting of the League, a gala dinner to be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the White Inn in Fredonia. League members will vote on the budget and program priorities for the coming year and for members of the board.

There will be an award presentation for Leaguer of the Year, this year shared by Paula Coats and Laura Sarek. A basket of local products and artifacts will be raffled.

The public is cordially invited to attend the dinner or to come after dinner to hear Horrigan, who will be speaking at about 7:45 p.m. After his presentation, Horrigan will answer questions from the audience.

Dayton Town Board meeting change

The Dayton Town Board will change its regular meeting date for the May monthly meeting. The board will meet on May 7 at 7 p.m. There will be no meeting on the regular date of the second Wednesday.

DFD April run report

The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 148 runs in April, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 122 emergency medical service runs resulting in 45 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 16 still alarms, seven box alarms and three mutual aid calls.

Dunkirk library seeks donations for sale

Donations are being accepted now until June 2 at the Dunkirk Free Library for the annual Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library summer book sale, to be held on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gently-used and pre-loved books, magazines, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and cassette tapes will be appreciated. No textbooks, newspapers or encyclopedias can be accepted. All proceeds from the book sale will be used for library programs and improvements.

Italian-American Scholarship deadline today

Assemblyman Joseph Giglio (R,C,I-Gowanda) is reminding residents the last day to send applications for to apply for the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators scholarship is today. The conference will select four students to receive $2,000 scholarships, two based on academic achievement and two for athletic talent. Winners will be invited to an award ceremony held in Albany in June.

Giglio will select one applicant from each category to be included in the final statewide selection process. Applicants may be any current student, high school through graduate school, planning to attend college in the fall. Eligibility requirements include students GPA, an interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in their local community and individual financial need.

Interested students can receive an application by contacting Giglio’s office at 373-7103 or by email at giglioj@assembly.state.ny.us. Applications must be received in Giglio’s office, 700 W. State St., Westgate Plaza, Olean by 5 p.m., on Friday.

Fredonia for St. Jude to collect cans Sunday

Fredonia for St. Jude will host Cans For Cancer on Sunday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Returnable cans and bottles will be collected with proceeds being donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital has a daily operating cost of $1.9 million, so every donation counts. St. Jude is committed to ensuring no family ever receives a bill. Crouse 5K Challenge May 9

The 15th annual Crouse 5K Challenge is scheduled for Friday, May 9. The time for the 5K is 6 p.m. A 1/2 mile fun for children and a tot sprint will follow after the 5K is finished. Participants must pre-register by May 5 to receive a shirt. Entry forms can be received through the website: gtownfit.com or contact Jennifer Gernatt (cell 860-8782) or email jengrnot@yahoo.com. On the day of the race, registration and packet pickup starts at 4:30 p.m. at the Gowanda American Legion. The 5K is a U.S. Track & Field certified course. Proceeds from the Challenge benefit the Gowanda Central School Dennis Crouse Sr. Scholarship, Blue By U. (youth track club) and the Gowanda Sports Boosters.

Chicken BBQ Sunday

The Ellery Center Volun-teer Fire Dept, 4400 Dutch Hollow Road, Bemus Point, is having a chicken BBQ Sunday from noon until sold out.

This dinner is a takeout dinner only. To pre-order, call 386-5381. Delivery can be arranged in the town of Ellery. The cost is $8 for adults and $6.25 for 12 and under.

Dinner will include chicken, potatoes, apple sauce, coleslaw, dinner roll and dessert.

National Day of Prayer today

Spring Rummage Sale planned this weekend

The Trinity Episcopal Church Women will hold their Spring Rummage Sale Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. This semi-annual sale helps the women’s group support various outreach efforts as well as helping to support needs within the church itself. This year, the bulk of the proceeds will be used to support the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry which touches many lives in the County.

This sale has the reputation of having items that are clean, in good working order and fairly priced. We invite everyone to come down and take a look around, who knows what treasure you might find.

Red Cross responds

to two fires

Members of the South-western NY American Red Cross Disaster Team re-sponded to provide disaster relief following fires in Brocton and Busti.

Disaster Team member Mary Walker responded to provide initial disaster assistance for two families following a fire in Brocton on Sunday night. Chris Tracey and John O’Hagan responded to assist a family of three following a fire in Busti on Tuesday afternoon.

Temporary housing, clothing, and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs. The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the individuals and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

United Senior Citizens meet on May 12

On May 12, the United Senior Citizens will hold their regular monthly luncheon meeting at the Fredonia Beaver Club at noon. The menu for this month is meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, bean casserole, bread, mixed tossed salad, coffee and dessert. The cost is $8 per person. For reservations, call Charlie St. George or call 672-4432 by Monday,. A representative from the Red Cross will be the guest speaker.

Westfield Little League opening day parade Saturday morning

On Saturday, the Westfield Little League with have its opening day parade followed by opening ceremonies.

The parade starts at 9 a.m. and all players, managers, coaches and volunteers from the T-ball, Minors, Majors and Softball team are to meet at Tops Friendly Market parking lot in Westfield at 8:45 a.m.

The parade starts at Tops and will travel west on Route 20 and conclude at the Little League Field. Followed by opening ceremonies and two baseball games.

City brush pickup set to begin on Monday

The city of Dunkirk Public Works Department announces that brush pickup will begin on Monday in District A.

District B will be picked up the week of May 12, District C will be picked up the week of May 19 and District D will be picked up the week of May 26.

Brush must be at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the Monday of the respective collection week but no earlier than the previous Saturday. City crews will collect each area only once. Brush placed at the curb after the crews pass by will not be collected and will be ticketed as a violation of the City Code and property owners will be prosecuted.

Brush should be bundled with string or twine no more than 4-feet long, diameter of no more than 18 inches and shall weigh no more than 65 pounds. Bundles should be placed between the sidewalk and curb but should not be placed near any posts, trees, water or sewer boxes, etc. which could be damaged during removal operations. Brush placed on city property other than the area fronting the respective residential property will be ticketed.

City residents may also drop brush at the Public Works facility on Lucas Avenue. Please refer to the 2014 Curbside Collection Schedule for further information.

Forestville school board meets Saturday

The Forestville Central School District Board of Education will hold a special meeting Saturday at the Forestville Wesleyan Church Fellowship Hall at 9495 Prospect Road at 10 a.m.

It is anticipated the board will go into executive session to discuss the employment history of a particular person. No board action will be taken.
