Revitalize Dunkirk Beautification Committee to meet

The Revitalize Dunkirk Beautification Committee will meet Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at Tim Horton’s to clean up the beach behind the Steger Hi-Rise Apart-ments. All citizens are welcome to come and help.

Dunkirk-Fredonia Center for Peace & Justice seeks donations for Nicaragua

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Center for Peace & Justice is continuing its program for humanitarian donations for poverty-stricken residents of Nicaragua. CPJ is doing this in conjunction with Ann Marie Zon, a Catholic social worker from East Amherst, who has spent more than three decades in assisting Nicaraguans.

The following items will be collected: summer clothing, footwear, household items (dishes, pots and pans, small appliances, no coffee makers) linens, sewing items, personal care items, school supplies, medical supplies (anything over the counter), religious articles (no prayer books), shelf-stable foods, toys and coloring books (no war toys). No bicycles.

Monetary gifts are also accepted. Make checks pay-able to Nicaraguan Mission. Leave the checks when you bring items (or send them) to Rodney Houck, 146 Central Ave., Fredonia.

The CPJ 2014 collection begins Tuesday and runs until Aug. 2. Items are to be brought to the Houck garage. Call the Houcks at 673-9258 before coming.

Valley Historical Society meets Tuesday

The regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Museum, corner of Main and Lester streets in Sinclairville.

The program will be “Patriotic Moment” by Albert Olmsted and include a birthday celebration with cake and ice cream provided by John and Susan Sipos.

The agenda will cover progress at Bicenten-nial Park, the Garden Walk, Historic House tour, drug activity, Yards of the Week, code enforcement and other neighborhood concerns and projects. The meeting is open to the public, but organizers especially urge residents of all the bird-named streets and cross-overs between Central Avenue and Robin Street, Third Street to Lucas Avenue, who wish to improve our streets and build community.

New Horizons Band rehearsals start today

The New Horizons Band of Western New York will begin its four-week summer session today. Rehearsals will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The first two sessions will be held at King Concert Hall in Rockefeller Arts Center. The last rehearsal will be on July 23.

The band will perform three concerts: July 17 in Brocton, July 19 in Mayville and July 30 in Fredonia. The director of the New Hori-zons Band is Dr. Kate Levy.

Dr. Windmueller is the author of “The Quest for Power,” an exploration of the elements, real and imagined, that have shaped and defined Jewish power, politics and practice throughout history.

During his appearances at the Everett Center, Dr. Windmueller will discuss the interplay between identity politics and American life. His lecture today, “From Tea Party to J Street,” examines the reinvention of American Jewish political behavior from its inception in 1654 to present day voting habits. On Tuesday, Dr. Windmueller will address the evolution of American Jewish institutional life and what it means for 21st century Jewry with his lecture “The American Jewish Revolution is Underway.” An author Q&A and book signing will follow both events.

Audubon Center and Sanctuary holiday opportunity Friday

The Audubon Center and Sanctuary at 1600 Riverside Road in Jamestown has a free holiday opportunity. On Friday, the Nature Center and Blue Heron Gift Shop will be closed, but the trails will be open from dawn until dusk as usual. Guests can visit Liberty, the bald eagle, as well as a native tree arboretum and several educational gardens.

Infant-parent aquatics this summer in Brocton

The Brocton Central School’s brand new pool will be the setting for an infant-parent aquatic program this summer.

The program will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 6:30 p.m. starting Wednesday and ending Aug. 6. The cost is $20 for a swimmer from 6 months old up to 5 years old, and a parent or guardian. Payment is due the first night of classes.

Ham radio club Field Day

CCAFMA Ham Radio Club will be conducting Field Day at the garage behind the Emergency Operations Center (formerly the high school) in Mayville, this weekend, June 28-29 from noon Saturday to noon Sunday.

Anyone with an interest in Ham Radio, Emergency communications, Public service or technology is encouraged to attend.

There will be equipment set up, and participants will be capable of communicating all over the U.S., Canada and beyond.

There will be information available for those interested in getting their Ham License, too.

Rural Ministry to hold workshop Sunday

On Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Friendly Kitchen, 131 Central Ave., Dunkirk, the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry will be offering a workshop titled “Going Local: How to Eat and Drink Local Year-round in Chautauqua County.”

This workshop will provide Chautauqua County residents with a chance to learn about the local food system, sample food grown in the north county, and learn how to store in-season food for the colder months. Hannah Farley of the CCRM Gleaning Project will be hosting this event.

All workshops hosted by the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry are free and open to the public.

Cassadaga Beach opens to public Saturday

Cassadaga Lake will be ready for the public on Saturday at noon. Village Trustee and Manager of the Beach Josh Slaven has hired three lifeguards, and four gatekeepers/recreation attendants. The gates will be open at the end of the basketball court for people bringing canoes and kayakers the same hours as the beach. “We are working on qualifying gatekeepers with CPR classes, and making them Red Cross certified,” Slaven said. “That is very important.”

“Wanted: The Bon Jovi Tribute Band” will be rockin’ the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce Music on the Pier Stage tonight.

Two years ago, Wanted played in front of an estimated 3,500 people for Wreck & Roll. Coming all the way from Cleveland, Wanted plays your favorites, including “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Bad Medicine,” “Runaway” and “Have a Nice Day.” This week’s sponsor is the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce.

Like last year, food will be available as well as beer.

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold its 10th Annual Pat McGee Memorial Dog Walk-a-thon on Saturday at Point Gratiot in Dunkirk. Registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. with the walk to begin at 10:15 a.m. This event is named in honor of the late New York State Senator Pat McGee who worked to fight animal cruelty and supported Buster’s Law, also known as the Felony Animal Cruelty Law.

Participants can register on-site, or registration forms can be downloaded from the LHS website. The cost is $15 for each registration. Each dog must have proper I.D. on a collar, be on a leash at all times, and have an up-to-date rabies shot certificate to present at registration.

There will be contests for dogs in various categories, as well as refreshments for sale. Also, the winning ticket for the Lakeshore Humane Society barbecue grill/meats raffle will be drawn.

This is a fun activity that helps the efforts of the Lakeshore Humane Society. (The rain date is Sunday, with registration 1 to 2 p.m., and walk to begin at 2:15 p.m.)

exercises Saturday

Dunkirk Senior High School commencement exercises will be held in King Concert Hall on the campus of Fredonia State University Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Please allow extra time for parking due to construction. A ticket will be required for admission.

Students will participate in the traditional courtyard procession and bell ringing ceremony that will begin at the Dunkirk High School at 9:15 a.m.

New Horizons band begins summer

session Monday

2014 ARRL Field Days on Saturday, Sunday

The Pioneer Radio Op-erator Society, Cattaraugus county Amateur Radio Exam Team and Catt. Co. ARES will join forces for the 2014 ARRL Field Days on Saturday and Sunday.

This is a 24-hour event to establish emergency communications in the field. This field can be anywhere that radio communications are needed.

The Allegany State Park will be the location for this year’s event. Hams will be handling traffic and making contacts throughout the world.

The Summit Ski area will be the location. Organizers will even have a “Go” station for those who do not have a license or have been licensed in the last two years.

“This is an open family event and is always a good time,” said Gary Tillinghast KB2YAA Catt. Co. ARES EC. “There is even a way to make more points when you have a local government official stop by and if a local paper does a story about Field Days.”

Collins to host 4th annual Liberty Fest

The 4th annual Liberty Fest will be held in Collins Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m.

Activities include face painting, a craft tent, scavenger hunt family games with fireworks by Sky-lighters of New York at 9:45 p.m.

Other activities include a parents vs. kids pickup softball, T-ball and volleyball games to take place at 5, 5:30 and 7 p.m., respectively. A magic show will be performed from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a street dance with music by Paul Zittel and Pure country will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Summer recreation sign ups, Kan Jam, badminton, basketball and corn hole will also be featured.

Ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers will be available throughout the evening. All activities take place at the Collins Town Park on School Street.

Fredonia Fire Department releases May run report

The Fredonia Fire De-partment has released its run report for May.

During the month, firefighters responded to 129 calls. That number breaks down to 99 rescue and emergency medical service calls, 13 false alarms, nine good intent calls, five service calls, two hazardous conditions without fire and one fire.

In regards to location, 81 of the calls were within the village of Fredonia, 21 were in the town of Pomfret outside village limits, 21 were at SUNY Fredonia and six were for mutual aid.

Hugh Butler to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Hugh Butler will be the next person featured on the first show of the second season of “Chautauqua Peo-ple.” The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on July 4.

Hugh and his wife Marsha learned about Chautauqua Institution when they came across large crowds attempting to enter through the old railroad station while traveling down Route 384 in 1988. They stopped and asked why there was so much activity in a relatively remote rural area, were told about the institution and subsequently permitted to step inside for a look without purchasing a gate pass. After this visit the Butlers immediately canceled their reservation at a local hotel and moved onto the grounds while completing a business project nearly. The Butler family were soon regular summer visitors and eventually year-round residents of the Institution.

Hugh serves as President of the Chautauqua Property Owners Association. In this capacity he represents the interests of nearly 1,500 property owners to the Chautauqua Institution administration and participates in the Trustees’ activities. He played a key role in developing the Shared Space Initiative based upon his academic background in urban planning. He is active in the Mayville Chamber of Commerce and other community activities.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television (channel 21.4) that has been recently autoscanned.

Senior Report will have Vicki Westling as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Westling’s topic will be the “State of Affairs.” The program is hosted by Doc Hamels. Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 2.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.81/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.68/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 13.5 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 1.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 4.6 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 10.9 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Dunkirk BOE executive session today

The Dunkirk Board of Education will hold an executive session today at 7 a.m. in the small conference room at the administrative building to address a specific personnel matter. There will be no action taken at the conclusion of the session.

Waterfront lifeguarding course starts on Friday

The Jamestown YMCA will offer the American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding course starting on Friday. The class will run Friday and Monday thru Thursday, ending on July 3.

Classes will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on June 27 and will run 9-5 all other days and include both classroom and water skills.

To aid in a smooth running class, all participants will need to successfully complete the pre-test to be permitted to take the course. The pre-test includes a 550-yard swim, recovering a brick, collecting submerged rings and treading water.

Class size is limited, so preregistration is encouraged. The cost for the class is $235 for YMCA members and $285 for potential members. Class cost covers all supplies and certification fees.

Upon successful completion of this class, students will be certified in American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding 2012, First Aid, CPR-PR and AED. Students must be at least 15 years of age by the final day of class.

This is the final certification class the Y will offer until spring of 2015.

Fredonia pickups begin

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning today.

Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once. Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than four feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material at this time.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place leaves and grass into the street at any time.

Residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time.

The dropoff area will be available until further notice. Remember to empty your bags.

Reg Lenna Center to show ‘The Wind Rises’

Japanese animation legend, Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, “The Wind Rises,” shows at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts in Jamestown tonight and Wednesday July 2 at 8 p.m.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, it fictionalizes the life story of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of two planes used by Japan in World War II. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. It is rated PG-13.

Water customers could experience shutoff June 30 in Brocton

The Town of Portland announced during a recent Town Council meeting that water customers residing at Ellicott Estates Trailer Park in Brocton will have their water service shut off due to non-payment of an existing water bill.

The shutoff is slated to take effect during the morning hours of June 30 unless payment arrangements are made with the Portland Town Clerk’s office.

Residents are encouraged to contact park management with concerns, and according to Portland Town Supervisor Dan Schrantz, certified notification has been made to the owner and management of Ellicott Estates, as well as Department of Health officials.

Traffic alert issued for Saturday near D&F Plaza

The Dunkirk Police Department has issued a traffic alert reminding motorists of a 5K race Saturday at about 9 a.m. in the area of the D&F Plaza. Police are asking those in the area at that time to be aware of traffic pattern changes and heavy pedestrian traffic. Police also remind motorists the D&F Plaza speed limit is posted at 5 mph.

Underground Railroad Talk at Cattaraugus County Museum

On Saturday, the Catta-raugus County Museum’s Cultural Series of programming will continue as archivist Karen Livsey will be on hand to give a talk on the Underground Railroad and its impact on our region, with an emphasis on Chautauqua County.

Livsey, the archivist at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown, is a native of Chautauqua County who studied at JCC and SUNY Albany. Having been involved in genealogical research for over 40 years, it was this pursuit that led her to an interest in the history of the Underground Railroad and its local ties.

The program will take place at 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The Cattaraugus County Mus-eum is located in the Stone House, 9824 Route 16 Machias. Feel free to call 353-8200 with questions.

Primate sanctuary

to be at fest

The Primate Sanctuary is one of several exhibits that will be at the Great Lakes Experience Festival at Mem-orial Park in Dunkirk from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

This exhibit will entail an interactive presentation with a total of five monkeys for the audience to see. Both new world and old world monkeys will be shown, ranging from 8 ounces to 10 pounds. This educational experience will provide an opportunity to explore the unique characteristics of these primates.

The Primate Sanctuary, formerly known as “Monkey Business” is a non-profit organization.

The Sanctuary is dedicated to the well-being and placement of unwanted primates. It is considered a permanent safe haven for all species of primates.

Many of the primates were given by private owners, veterinarians, SPCA’s and medical labs or zoo’s located throughout the United States.

The Sanctuary’s goal is to provide quality care and to ensure a non-stressful living environment for the primates through proper funding and management.

Forestville water report

The village of Forestville released a water report for 2013. The report states the village met all state drinking water health standards. It also mentions the work on the on the waterlines and the conversion from spring water to well water in April.

A chart shows the only violations in the village’s spring water were from turbidity (microbiological contaminants) from soil runoff from two tests in November. The turbidity is due to the nature of surface water, which can contain bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Also included are tips for saving water and a reminder to residents the lines from the curb box to the meter are residents’ responsibility and replacement of lines should be done to village specifications. A list of these specifications and a copy of the water report can be found in the village clerk’s office.

A used clothing dropoff shed has been placed at 18 Chestnut St., Forestville (parking lot). This is sponsored by the Forestville Fire Department.

Items accepted include all clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, blankets, pillowcases, drapes and stuffed toys (your donation will not be cut up or shredded). Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga Thursday at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training is available in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

CJCA will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

“Chautauqua: Charting a Life in the Arts” follows four students from Chautauqua Institution Schools of Fine and Performing Arts through their auditions, practices, and performances during the summer of 2013. The story focuses on violinist Ade Williams, singer Jean-Michel Richer, and sibling dancers Colby and Christina Clark as they sharpen their already impressive skills with world-renowned masters at the state-of-the-art facility.

Produced by PBS affilliate WQED in Pittsburgh, the program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on June 27.

The Dunkirk Rotary Club seeks crafters and vendors interested in being part of its annual Fly-In Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon July 13 at the Dunkirk Airport.

The annual Fishing and Casting Derby for Kids will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westfield Fish and Game Club on Ogden Road. (Fish any amount of time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) The derby is for all children in the area, ages 5 to 12.

There is no charge and lunch will be provided. A parent or guardian must be in attendance. Participants should bring a pole and bait (no minnows). Zoomobile returns

to great Lakes Festival

The Buffalo Zoomobile will return to the Great Lakes Festival again this year. The festival will be held at Memorial Park in Dunkirk from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Zoomobile was a popular exhibit at last years festival. This year’s exhibit will feature an assortment of live animals, both domestic and wild. Visitors will also see and interact with biofacts such as pelts, bones, and other items representative of the animal kingdom.

The mission of the Buffalo Zoomobile is to educate all audiences about nature and conservation using live animals and biofacts. They offer a wide variety of programs, both lecture and informal, to educate and inspire. The Zoomobile programs are available to classrooms, daycares, summer camps, senior homes, and clubs, as well as large public events like the Great Lakes Experience Festival.

Fredonia to offer stroke/head injury support sessions

Group support meetings for stroke and head injury survivors and their family members will be offered at the Henry C. Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders at the State University of New York at Fredonia on Tuesday and July 15 at 3 p.m. in E148 Thompson Hall.

A typical group session includes activities to help stroke/head injury survivors use compensatory strategies to improve communication skills as well as opportunities to socialize and share experiences. Educational information will also be provided. Light refreshments will be served.

Camp Gross signups begin today

The Dunkirk Youth Bureau has announced that Summer Better Than Others Day Camp at Camp Gross signups will begin today.

Scholarships available for summer youth

programs at JCC

A limited number of scholarships are available for summer youth programming offered at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Programs include Kids’ College, youth sailing, Jr. Kids’ College and Innovation Academy.

Scholarships for 50 percent of tuition are available for up to two children per family, on a first come, first served basis.

Students must be eligible for the public school free or reduced price lunch program to receive a scholarship, and eligibility verification from the child’s school must be presented at the time of registration.

Water customers could experience shutoff June 30 in Brocton

The town of Portland announced during a recent town council meeting that water customers residing at Ellicott Estates Trailer Park in Brocton will have their water service shut off due to non-payment of an existing water bill.

The shutoff is slated to take effect during the morning hours of June 30 unless payment arrangements are made with the Portland Town Clerk’s office.

Residents are encouraged to contact park management with concerns, and according to Portland Town Supervisor Dan Schrantz, certified notification has been made to the owner and management of Ellicott Estates, as well as Department of Health officials.

Fredonia Fire Dept. run report for April

The Fredonia Fire Department has released its run report for April.

Firefighters were called out to 143 incidents. That number breaks down to 80 calls in the village of Fredonia, 29 in the town of Pomfret outside village limits, 24 at SUNY Fredonia, eight mutual aid and two on the New York State Thruway.

Broken down by type of call, there were 113 rescue and emergency medical service incidents, 15 false alarms, eight good intent calls, five fires, one service call and one severe weather/natural disaster incident.

The Pomfret Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall to consider the appeal of Kathy Campola of 19 Lakeview Ave., Fredonia.

The ZBA will consider a special use permit for property located at Route 60, Cassadaga.

The property is described as two parcels to be combined and the request is based on the denial of a building permit to build a pavilion and the need for a special use variance for the number of buildings located on the combined property.

Humane Society gets grant for pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has received a grant from PetSmart Charities to spay/neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners.

The grant also includes a microchip for the dog and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and Jamestown can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until Sunday.

Promoting walking as a form of exercise in Westfield

The Westfield Wellness Walkers are a group of community people interested in walking as a form of exercise once a week during the summer months. The walks occur on Thursday evenings starting this week and will continue through Aug. 14. There is a bonus walk on Aug. 21 for those who have built up their endurance and want to challenge themselves with a 5-mile walk around the town.

The group will meet in the Westfield Family Physicians parking lot at 6:30 p.m. each Thursday.

All are welcome and the only qualification is to show up in comfortable clothing and shoes. Walks will center around a theme and cover a distance of 1-2 miles. Participants are encouraged to walk at their own pace and stop prior to the 1-2 miles if they aren’t ready to finish that long of a distance when they first start out.

This is the second year of walking for this group and it is organized by Westfield Family Physicians staff personnel. Water will be provided and each week there will be a drawing of a Tops gift card for those who participate.

Tri-County Crisis Pregnancy Center gives thanks

Tri-County Crisis Preg-nancy Center would like to thank all those who braved the elements to Walk for Life. About 30 people participated. Some shortened their walk, due to the lightning, and others completed the 2-mile walk despite the weather. The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga Thursday at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma.

Training is available in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

CJCA will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Red Cross responds

to Fredonia fire

Members of the Southwestern NY American Red Cross Disaster Team responded to provide disaster relief following a fire on West Main Street in Fredonia Monday evening.

Disaster Team members Georgiann Leone and Mary Walker responded to provide initial disaster assistance for a family of six. Temporary housing, clothing, and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs.

The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the individuals and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

All disaster assistance offered by the American Red Cross is complimentary and made possible by generous contributions from the American people and residents of Chautauqua County.

Lecture to appear on Access Channel 5

Christine Cassel’s Chau-tauqua lecture “Innovation in Achieving Affordable Care” will be shown on Access Channel 5.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on June 20.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sher-man and Westfield areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. ‘Dialogues’ to air on Access Channel 5

“Dialogues” is the name of a half-hour television program produced by Mark Kiyak from SUNY Fredonia. The next program will feature guest Steve and Julie Rockcastle. The Rockcastles are the organizers of the Great Blue Heron Music Festival. This is the 23rd year of the festival held in Sherman and some of the topics covered include the history of the fest, what activities there are for adults as well as children, who’s performing this year, and how to help through volunteering.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 1:25 and 7:25 p.m. each day beginning saturday with the last airing on June 20.

A meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council Personnel Committee scheduled for Monday at 3:30 p.m. in city Hall was canceled due to the lack of a quorum. Councilman Adelino Gonzalez chairs the committee and was the only member able to attend the meeting. Councilmen Michael Michalski and William J. Rivera are the other two members of the Personnel Committee.

Red Cross annual meeting June 19

The American Red Cross of Southwestern New York has announced that the Annual Meeting of the Chapter will be held June 19 at the Olean Elks Club, 209 W. State St. in Olean. Anyone who has donated time, money, blood or any service to the Red Cross during the time period of July 1, 2013 through June 19, 2014 is invited to attend. Camp Gross signups begin Monday

The Dunkirk Youth Bureau has announced that Summer Better Than Others Day Camp at Camp Gross signups will begin Monday. City residents will be allowed to sign up their children ages 5-11 (5-year-olds must be graduates of kindergarten) beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the Youth and Recreation Office, 338 Central Ave., Suite 210. Non-residents can sign-up June 23 at 12:30 p.m.

Summer Better Than Others Day Camp will begin July 7 and run through the week of Aug. 4-8. Fees will remain the same, $40 for city residents and $50 for non-city attendees. On Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., Boy Scout Troop 267 will host its annual Chiavetta’s Chicken BBQ fundraiser at the American Legion Post 59 at 156 E. Main St. in Fredonia. This yearly fundraiser helps fund all of the troop’s activities and needs throughout the scouting year and helps offset costs to families and their scouts.

The chicken BBQ dinner consists of 1/2 chicken, roll, baked beans, potato salad and ice cream for dessert.

to discuss possible Route 60 pavilion

The Pomfret Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on June 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall to consider the appeal of Kathy Campola of 19 Lakeview Ave., Fredonia.

The ZBA will consider a special use permit for property located at Route 60, Cassadaga. The property is described as two parcels to be combined and the request is based on the denial of a building permit to build a pavilion and the need for a special use variance for the number of buildings located on the combined property.

The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County cordially invites the public to attend a forum on high volume horizontal hydrofracking at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in room 105, Fenton Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

While the League of Women Voters has a position in favor of continuing the statewide moratorium, it believes the public should be enabled to form its own opinions based on a presentation of the facts, controversial though they may be.

The forum on Tuesday will consist of a balanced group of presenters. David Colligan is an independent lawyer from Buffalo who specializes in energy issues. John Holko and Tim Hull are energy company executives. Kim Sherwood is an hydrologist working in Chautauqua County, and Glenn Wahl represents Cattaraugus-Chautauqua for Clean Water.

The forum will be moderated by professor David Rankin, Chair of Political Science at SUNY Fredonia.

Admission is free and open to all. There will be opportunities for the panelists to question one another and to answer questions from the audience.

Literacy Volunteers book sale Saturday

Literacy Volunteers will hold a book sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 21 East Bookstore, located at 21 E. Second St., Washington Avenue entrance, Dunkirk.

Paperbacks will be available for $.50, hardcovers $1, children’s books $.25 as well as some specially priced books.

Humane Society given grant for pitbulls and pitbull-mix dogs

The Chautauqua County Humane Society has re-ceived a grant from Pet-Smart Charities to spay/-neuter 146 pitbulls and pitbull mix dogs at no cost to the owners. The grant also includes a microchip and a rabies vaccine if needed.

Only residents of Dun-kirk, Fredonia and James-town can partake in grant funding. This grant is valid until June 15.

Training for tutors

Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County is offering a new training series for tutors. Classes continue Tuesday plus June 17 and June 24 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Many adults in Chautauqua County need help to increase their literacy skills and better their quality of life. Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County provides free, one-on-one adult literacy tutoring services. In order to do this important work, tutor volunteers are needed.

Spring is fast approaching and shortly there will be bicyclists through Dunkirk and Fredonia. Hopefully those bicyclists are riding with the traffic flow, obeying all traffic laws, yielding to traffic when it’s appropriate, being predictable and alert, watching for parked cars and looking before they are turning.

Last year the Putnam Record Insurance Agency teamed up with numerous community partners and presented their first annual Safety Saturday. Rich Good-man from Spoke Folk educated participants on bicycle safety and the tradition will continue on June 7 at the Chautauqua County Fair-grounds Floral Hall Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be hourly giveaways, hot dogs, juice and numerous demonstrations.

Fundraiser for ‘wheels’

A spaghetti dinner fund-raiser for “Anthony’s Wheels” will be from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Masonic Lodge on Main Street. The event benefits 16-year-old Anthony Shuart, who suffered a traumatic brain injury at birth, causing a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

In an effort to keep An-thony at home, “Anthony’s Wheels” is hoping to raise $18,000 for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.

Silver Creek Fire Department report

Between May 6 and June 2, the Silver Creek Fire Department responded to 42 calls. Twenty of these calls were within the village, 15 of which were emergency related and one each for fire, accident and hazardous material related calls. Nineteen calls were in the town of Hanover, 13 of which were emergency related, four fire, one accident and one hazardous material. The department also responded to two mutual aid calls in the town of Sheridan for a fire and an emergency call and responded to one call for mutual aid for a hazardous material related incident in the village of Falconer during its flood.

Train display to be open Saturday

Roy Davis of the Dunkirk Historical museum will be joining in the Safety Saturday activities at the Alco-Brooks Locomotive.

The Brooks/ALCO Railroad Display is located at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds on Central Avenue in Dunkirk. It features the former Boston & Main 444 Locomotive, donated by the Fletcher Granite Co. of West Chelmsford, Mass., in 1986.

The locomotive was constructed at the American Locomotive Co.’s Brooks Works in 1916, builder’s 56532. Also at the site are the Delaware & Hudson wood sided boxcar 22020, a New York Central wooden caboose 19224, and various other local railroad artifacts.

Safety Saturday is sponsored by the Putnam Record Insurance Agency.

After visiting the locomotive, visit the various areas of Safety Saturday including the car seat safety check, finger printing and fire safety and indulge in popcorn, juice and hot dogs available free of charge to Safety Saturday participants.

Red Cross responds to Jamestown fire

Members of the South-western NY American Red Cross Disaster Team re-sponded to provide disaster relief following a fire on McDaniel Avenue in James-town on Monday afternoon.

Disaster Team members Phil Baker and Jeanie Shiffer responded to provide initial disaster assistance for a family of three. Temporary housing, clothing, and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs. The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the individuals and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

All disaster assistance offered by the American Red Cross is complimentary and made possible by generous contributions from the American people and residents of Chautauqua County.

The American Red Cross is a United Way Community Partner.

Rally for Irving hotel/water park Monday

Hanover residents are organizing a rally to support the proposed hotel/water park development on Beebe Road in Irving. The rally will take place at the Hanover Town Board meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in King Road Park, 601 King Road, Forestville. Supporters are encouraged to make their own signs with a positive message to make sure the development goes forward. Petitions are also available at Aunt Millie’s and the Garden Cafe.

Front entrance of Fredonia School closed

The front entrance off of Route 20 to Fredonia Central School will be closed for repairs Thursday after 3:30 p.m., all day Friday and throughout the weekend. All cars and buses must use the back entrance (off Lakeview Avenue) for drop-offs and pickups on Thursday after 3:30 p.m., all day Friday and all weekend.

Fredonia Village Board meeting canceled

The Fredonia Village Board special meeting scheduled for this past Tuesday was canceled due to no quorum present. The meeting will not be rescheduled.

The next regular meeting is Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Village Hall.

Included were 134 emergency medical service runs resulting in 45 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 19 still alarms, 11 box alarms and three mutual aid calls.

Juneteenth weekend

at Memorial Park

A Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Memorial Park, Dunkirk. A variety of cultural events and activities will be held. This event, sponsored by a group of local citizens, is celebrating its 19th anniversary.

Kiwanis Club chicken barbecue dinner Sunday

The Northern Chautau-qua Kiwanis Club will hold its annual chicken barbecue Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dunkirk Mem-orial Post 62, 211 Central Ave. Chicken comes with two sides, bread/butter, coffee/juice. Desserts will be provided by the Fredonia Key Club. All proceeds stay in the local community. Tickets are $9. Walk for Life Sunday in Gowanda

The Tri-County Crisis Pregnancy Center of Go-wanda will hold its annual Walk for Life Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the Gowanda Free Methodist Church in Gowanda.

Walkers of all ages are invited to participate and ask their friends, relatives and neighbors to sponsor their Walk for Life.

All funds received will be used to continue the work of the center in reaching out to women with crisis pregnancies. The center’s free services include peer counseling, pregnancy testing, pre-natal vitamins, baby clothes, baby furniture, project Rachel, and referrals for additional services.

T-shirts are awarded for walkers collecting $50 or more. All participants are eligible for door prizes. Refreshments for all. Corwin’s Chautauqua lecture to air on Access Channel 5

Steven J. Corwin’s Tues-day morning Chautauqua lecture will be shown on Access Channel 5.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on June 13.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman and Westfield areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. Programming from Access Channel 5 (channel 21.4 on a QAM digital TV) is also aired each evening in the town of Hanover on cable channel 12 (channel 98.3 on a QAM digital TV).

Barrie Yochim

to appear on Senior Report Saturday

Senior Report will have Barrie Yochim as the guest on Saturday’s television pro-gram. Yochim is the execu-tive director at Meels on Wheels and a candidate for the NYS Assembly. The pro-gram is hosted by John Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individ-uals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout out. The program is rebroadcast daily at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Senior Report was conceived by Reed Powers and has aired on Access Chan-nel 5 since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Assessment roll

City of Dunkirk Assessor Thomas Mleczko has established the tentative assessment roll for the current year and will make them available for review today through Saturday at various times in the assessor’s City Hall office. Hours today are from 6 to 10 p.m.; Wednes-day and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon; and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Board of Assessment Review will meet June 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m. in City Hall to hear all complaints in relation to assessments.

Road closed

County Road 90A (Tour-ing Route 89) – Angell Road – between Hanover Road and Alleghany road, Town of Hanover, will be closed to through traffic on Wednesday until the barricades are removed. County crews will be replacing a cross pipe and a detour will be posted.

Lakeshore Humane Society holds Pet Adoption Day/Open House Saturday

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 431 E. Chestnut St. in Dunkirk.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga Thursday at 10 a.m.

CJCA provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training is available in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

CJCA will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Westfield Monday Night Club event

The Westfield Monday Night Club is holding its 20-family lawn sale. All proceeds are donated to local causes and charities.

Silver Creek water bills to be sent soon

Silver Creek water customers will received their bills within the next few days. The village of Silver Creek apologizes for the delay, which was caused by a glitch in the billing system.

Silver Creek brush sch-edule different for June

Silver Creek residents should be advised due to an error on the village’s June calendar, brush pickup has been scheduled for June 9 and 23 instead of the usual first and third Mondays. The schedule will return to normal after June.
