Nerds Gone Wild make their MOP debut tonight

Dunkirk, get ready to relive the ’80s era as five of the most lovable and charming geekazoids make their Music on the Pier debut as Nerds Gone Wild.

Sponsored by the Dunkirk Falcon Club, Nerds Gone Wild bring authenticity with the taped glasses, pocket protectors, bowties, flood pants and some nerdy dance moves thrown in. These geeks are sure to combine veteran musicianship and pure energy for an evening of entertainment & contagious fun.

Again, food will be available as well as a beer tent.

Silver Creek Villagewide yard sales Saturday

The 22nd annual Silver Creek and area villagewide yard sales will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sales will take place rain or shine. Maps will be available for 50 cents each in the park and at 29 Oak St. starting at 8 a.m. The purchaser of each map will be entered to win $25 Chamber of Commerce Gift Checks. Winner need not be present.

Reduced rates will be offered at designated homes from 3:01 to 5 p.m. Those homes will show a circle on the map. There are many homes outside the village limits so the those who buy the maps can locate the many sales and have a chance to win the gift checks.

This is the annual fundraiser for the Hanover Community Chamber of Commerce. All profits will be used for community enhancement.

Game Night Mondays at Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek

Come to the Anderson-Lee Library the first Mondays of the month at 6 p.m. for Game Night, to play board/card games with family and friends. Red Cross lifeguard certification course at Dunkirk Schools pool

The Red Cross New Lifeguard Certification Course will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The course will cover New Lifeguarding certification, CPR/AED and First Aid. The class size is capped at 10 participants. Participants will need to bring a breathing barrier and should be prepared for classroom instruction and pool instruction. Participants are to meet in the Dunkirk High School Pool foyer area no later than 8 a.m.

Cherry Creek Fire Auxiliary rummage sale Saturday at fire hall

The Cherry Creek Fire Auxiliary will hold its annual rummage sale Saturday at the Cherry Creek Fire Hall from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

A bag sale starts at noon for $2 per bag.

Donations of items will be accepted and can be brought to the Fire Hall the day of the sale.

Silver Creek High School Class of 1948 mini reunion Sunday

Plans are well underway for a mini reunion for the Class of 1948 from Silver Creek High School to celebrate 66 years. The event will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Colony Restaurant.

The Valley Historical Society will hold its annual quilt show Saturday and Sunday at the society’s museum at Main and Lester streets in Sinclairville.

The museum will be open for the show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Each year the society attempts to display dozens of quilts never displayed in previous years.

There is no charge to attend the show.

Anyone wishing to display a quilt at the show should contact Betty Jean at 962-2309.

Last Safe Boating Class of the season Sunday

The last Safe Boating Class of the Season is Sunday. Safe Boating Classes meet all the requirements for the New York Safe Boating Program.

The class will be held at Chautauqua Marina, 104 W. Lake Road, Mayville.

Course is for adults and children ages 10 years of age and up.

Course fee is $45 and materials fee is $5. For pre registration call 753-3913 or 753-0409.

Mothers of Twins and Triplets to meet Monday in Dunkirk

There will be a reunion picnic of the Northern Chautauqua County Mothers of Twins and Triplets Club Monday at 6 p.m.

The picnic will be held at the home of Tina Butryn, 49 N. Roberts Road, Dunkirk.

Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass and any old photographs of the group.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.76/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.51/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 8.3 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 6.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 16.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 11.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Priests to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Fathers Douglas May and Poulos Ishak Youssef will be interviewed on the next edition Chautauqua People. The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday, with the last airing on Aug. 8.

Father Doug is a native of Boston, N.Y., and a product of Hamburg High School. He graduated from Univer-sity at Buffalo following service in the United States Air Force. Afterward, he was employed in the Middle East and graduated from the Maryknoll School of Theology on Ossining. Nearly the entirety of his ministry has been spent in Egypt where he currently serves as the only American, native-English-speaking Catholic Priest.

Father Paul is a Coptic Catholic Priest in Egypt. He studied philosophy and was ordained following graduation from Saint Leo the Great Seminary in Egypt. He currently serves as a parish priest to a congregation of 3,000 Coptic Catholics.

Fathers Doug and Paul will be interviewed by John Viehe, Producer of Chautauqua People.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas. Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter or on a digital television (channel 21.4) that has been recently autoscanned.

Peterson and Zimmer to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Greg Peterson and Phil Zimmer as the guests on Saturday. Peterson and Zimmer will talk about “Defenders of Freedom.” The show will be guest hosted by Doc Hamels.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. The guest is subject to change.

Chautauqua Sunrise is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chau-tauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville. ‘Cooking with Nick’ to air on Access Channel 5

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns this week with a show is entitled “Asian Flavors.” The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3:00 and 9:00 PM each day, beginning August 2, and ending on August 8. Rizzo makes roasted pepper soup with crumbled bleu cheese, Asian flavored chicken and vegetable packets, citrus and greens salad and almond chai ice cream.

Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

The cable program is carried in the following communities: Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield.

All cable viewers in the mentioned area can receive Access Channel 5, which is now digital, at channel 5 on a converter, or channel 21.4 on a flat-panel TV with no converter.

Access Channel 5 programming is also aired each evening in the Town of Hanover on Cable Channel 12 or Digital Channel 98.3

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction and soon the security industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma.

Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse. Starting soon the Academy will also offer a security and protective services program.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Dunkirk Town Board Special Meeting tonight

The Town of Dunkirk Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 6 o’clock tonight at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road.

The board will hold a joint workshop with the zoning and planning boards to review proposed changes to the zoning law and conduct any other lawful business to come before the Town Board.

Garland Room sets summer hours

The Garland Room at the Barker Museum and Library in Fredonia will be open additional hours this summer through Aug. 28.

Hours will be: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday 4 to 8 p.m.

Volunteers will be on hand to help with visitors with genealogical research.

Cornell University Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardeners in Cattaraugus County will offer two back-to-back programs on “Selecting the Right Rose” by Master Gardener Maggie Smith, and “Creating Fairy Gardens” by Master Gardener Nan Miller, on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nannen Arboretum, 28 Parkside Drive, Ellicottville.

Fredonia to perform watermain

The village of Fredonia Department of Public Works will be doing maintenance of the watermains on Temple Street beginning today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The work will continue throughout the week until the work is completed.

Residents of Temple Street, between Main Street and Maple Avenue, in addition to Terrance and Day streets and Central Avenue may experience of periods of little or no water during this time.

Pine Valley looking to fill Board of Education vacancy

Due to a resignation, Pine Valley Central School has a vacancy on its Board of Education.

Information on school board membership is available from Debbie Hooker, district clerk, in the district office at the elementary school.

The Portland highway superintendent will close Bliss Road from the Chau-tauqua Town Line to Plank Road and Plank Road to Felton Road today from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Seymour Memorial Library holding summer

The Mary E. Seymour Memorial Library will hold its summer reading program on Fridays through Aug. 15.

The Stockton sessions will be held in coordination with the town recreation program, meeting at the park at 11:30 a.m.

The Cassadaga Branch will welcome children at the library at 1 p.m. The theme for this year is “Fizz Boom Read” and stories, games, crafts and snacks will explore scientific concepts. Pre-K through 3rd-grade boys and girls are encouraged to come and join the fun.

The Summer Reading program will end with prizes, refreshments and a special concert by Nan Hoffman.

Westfield residents reminded of permits

The village of Westfield reminds residents that permits are required for lawn sales, dumpsters and building projects.

Summer is a time for cleaning up, yard sales, and taking care of your properties. The village of Westfield would like to remind everyone that building permits are required for all construction projects (including interior work and roofing) with the exception of replacement windows (same size as existing windows), painting or siding.

If you are planning on having a garage, lawn, or neighborhood sale you will need a permit. The permit is free of charge and can be obtained at the village offices. You are allowed up to three sales per year.

Dumpster permits are also free and needed for temporary use.

Chautauqua Music camps accepting on-site registrations

The Chautauqua Music Camps will be accepting on-site registrants for the 2014 camp, according to Director, Peter Lindblom. Since the mail-in registration date has passed, interested students may apply in-person on the first day, Aug, 11 at 8:30 a.m. It will take place at McKnight Hall on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. Student can get directions at either the Turner or Main Gate entrance to the grounds.

The Chautauqua Music Camps is open to all band and orchestra instrumentalists who are in at least 5th grade. All information, including schedules, applications, and pictures, is available at the CMC website chautauquamusiccamps.org

The first Forestville Community Family Picnic will be held Aug. 16 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Forestville American Legion on Cedar Street. Residents of all ages from the Forestville School District are invited to attend. Hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, silverware and paper products will be provided. Residents are asked to bring a dish to pass. No alcohol. There will be games for all ages and the movie “Frozen” will be aired. 40th Antique Equipment Show to be held Aug. 15-17

The Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association will holds its 40th annual show of antique engines, farm tractors, autos, models, and other mechanical equipment Aug. 15, 16, and 17 on its grounds on Cemetery Road, Stockton. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For a $5 donation, the public can see the equipment in operation and on parade. There is a flea market, ample free parking, food, and permanent restrooms all on the grounds. There are demonstrations and events throughout the day as well as special events at posted times. Children under 14 are admitted free. Senior citizen admission Friday is $3.

VBS set for Laona U.M.

Vacation Bible School will be held at the Laona U.M. Church from Aug. 4-7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme this year is “Discovering Jesus Expedition.” There will be the Bible story, crafts, games and snacks. The program is about discovering Jesus in many ways and in many places. “Souls to Reach” puppet team will help with the program with the main character being Laona Lou. Dunkirk Lakefront 5K Walk/Run Aug. 9

The Dunkirk Lakefront 5KWalk/Run will begin and end at the Dunkirk Clarion Hotel, 30 Lake Shore Drive East, on Aug. 9. This 5K starts at 9 a.m. runs along the shores of Lake Erie. Fees are as follows: for the run: $20 pre-registration, $25 race day registration. For the walk: $10 registration, free for under 14 with a registered adult. Age groups are 14 & under, 15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69, 70 to 79 and 80 & above. Food and drinks will be provided to all registered runners and walkers. Guests may enjoy the festivities and food for $4 for adults and $2 for children. Permits required for Westfield lawn sales, dumpsters and

building projects

The Village of Westfield would like to remind everyone that building permits are required for all construction projects, including interior work and roofing, with the exception of replacement windows (same size as existing window), painting and/or siding.

If you are planning on having a garage/lawn/-neighborhood sale, you will need a permit. The permit is free of charge and can be obtained at the village offices where you pay you utility bills. You are allowed up to three sales per year.

Also, you need a permit for a temporary dumpster. Dumpster permits are also free of charge.

Pie time in Westfield

The Westfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will have its pie booth at the annual Westfield Arts and Crafts Show in Moore Park on Friday and Saturday. A vast array of pies will be available each day from 9 a.m. until sold out. Patrons may sit and enjoy a slice or take a whole pie home.

Straight out of Buffalo, the Nickel City Pimp Choir returns to Dunkirk for one of the most entertaining shows of the year. These “funkmasters” bring the beat of R&B and soul classics of Al Green, James Brown, Otis Redding and the Blues Brothers. Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Sam Genco as the guest on Saturday. Genco’s topic will be cemeteries around Chautauqua Coun-ty. The show will be guest hosted by Randy Burt.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out.

The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Silver Creek High School Class of 1948 plans mini reunion

Plans are underway for a mini reunion for the Class of 1948 from Silver Creek High School to celebrate 66 years. The event will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Colony Restaurant.

‘Cooking with Nick’ to air on Access Channel 5

Nick Rizzo, a local chef from Mayville, returns this week with a show titled “A Delicious Casserole.” The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day, beginning Sunday, and ending on Aug. 1.

Rizzo makes greens and fennel salad, baked spaghetti with vegetables, parsley pesto cheese toasts and Italian rum cake cups.

Chef Rizzo stresses that the meal can be prepared in about one hour.

The cable program is carried in the following communities: Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman and Westfield.

All cable viewers in the mentioned area can receive Access Channel 5, which is now digital, at channel 5 on a converter, or channel 21.4 on a flat-panel TV with no converter.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Academy provides training to begin a career in the healthcare and construction industries as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse. The Academy will accept young adults, age 16 to 24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Erie County Legislator John J. Mills announced that his 8th annual Hot Dog Roast Fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Collins Public Library, 2341 Main St., Collins. The event will feature Primate Sanctuary from 11 a.m. to noon and the Friends of the Library Bake Sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chautauqua Tobacco Asset Securitization Corporation board meets Friday morning

The Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Tobacco Asset Securitization Corp-oration will meet at 7:30 a.m. Friday in the CTASC meeting room in the main terminal at the Chautauqua County Airport-Jamestown, West Oak Hill Road in Ellicott. CTASC was formed by the county in 2000 to securitize its share of the settlement proceeds of tobacco-related litigation involving numerous states and local governments and the tobacco industry. The agenda for the meeting will include authorizing bond counsel and a financial advisor to assist in the potential refinancing of a portion or all of the CTASC bonds to take advantage of current market conditions.

The Red Cross New Lifeguard Certification Course will be held Aug. 4 through Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bill Karslake to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’ on Saturday

Bill Karslake will be interviewed on the next edition Chautauqua People. The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on Aug. 1.

A native of Kenilworth, Illinois, he graduated from New Trier High School and Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He spent his childhood and college summers at Chautauqua Institution. Chautauqua contacts led to a career in the furniture industry based in Hickory, North Carolina.

Bill joined the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees and subsequently served as its Chairman. During his tenure he oversaw cleanup of the Chautauqua waterfront, acquisition of the Turner School complex, and reorganization of the Trustees’ Committee structure.

Karslake will be interviewed by Chautauqua People Producer John Viehe.

Silver Creek and area villagewide yard sales Aug. 2

The 22nd annual Silver Creek and area villagewide yard sales will be Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sales will take place rain or shine. Maps will be available for 50 cents each in the park and at 29 Oak St. starting at 8 a.m. The buyer of each map will be entered to win $25 Chamber of Commerce gift checks. Winner need not be present.

Reduced rates will be offered at designated homes from 3:01 to 5 p.m. Those homes will show a circle on the map. There are many homes outside the village limits, so those who buy the maps can locate the many sales and have a chance to win the gift checks.

This is the annual fundraiser for the Hanover Community Chamber of Commerce. All profits will be used for community enhancement.

Back-to-back programs in the Arboretum series

Cornell University Coop-erative Extension’s Master Gardeners in Cattaraugus County will offer two back-to-back programs on “Understanding Your Soil and Using Compost to Improve It” and “Low Maintenance Turf Care” on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Nannen Arbore-tum, 28 Parkside Drive, Ellicottville. The programs will be hosted by Cornell University Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Lyn Chimera.

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 1.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.81/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. The national average has fallen 3.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.61/g.

Miller to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Douglas Miller will be interviewed on the next edition Chautauqua People. The program will air at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on July 25.

Miller is a documentary filmmaker and photographer of immense skill and technique. He has produced dozens of documentaries for the History Channel, Discovery Channel, A&E and other important TV outlets. From “A History of Fenway Park” (home of the Boston Red Sox), to a documentary on “Small Farms in America,” Miller has helped to create some of the most fascinating records of American life. A native of small town Ohio, he and his wife live in Studio City (Los Angeles), Calif. Miller is a member of a three-generation Chautauqua family.

He will be interviewed by Ira Cooperman.

Healthy Landscaping, Healthy Waters

Healthy Landscaping, Healthy Waters has scheduled its second event for Thursday at the Hewes BOCES Center in Ashville from 7 to 8 p.m.

University arts center seeking usher corps volunteers

The Michael C. Rocke-feller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia is seeking new members for its usher corps.

Ushers volunteer their time at various performing arts events, which run throughout the year. In exchange for their time, ushers earn punch cards that can be exchanged for tickets to specific events at Rockefeller Arts Center. Duties include taking tickets, distributing programs and directing patrons to their seats for events in King Concert Hall, Marvel Theatre and Bartlett Theatre. Daytime and eve-ning assignments are available. Training is provided.

Summer Day Camp at Children’s Safety Village

The Chautauqua Child-ren’s Safety Education Village will host its second annual Summer Day Camp July 28-Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Safety Village, 2695 Route 394 in Ashville, next to BOCES. Children from K-6th grade will participate in fun, safe activities that vary each day and include kayaking, biking, team building, fishing, hiking, scavenger hunts, crafts and much more.

The Pomfret Town Clerk’s office will be closed today since the town clerk will be attending a conference. The office will reopen on Wednesday for normal business hours.

Lifeguard certification course begins Aug. 4

The Red Cross New Lifeguard Certification Course will be held Aug. 4 through Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dunkirk City Schools pool

The course will cover new lifeguarding certification, CPR/AED and first aid. The class size is capped at 10 participants. Participants will need to bring a breathing barrier and should be prepared for classroom instruction and pool instruction. Participants are to meet in the pool foyer area no later than 8 a.m.

Healthy Landscaping, Healthy Waters

Healthy Landscaping, Healthy Waters has scheduled its second event for Thursday at the Hewes BOCES Center in Ashville from 7 to 8 p.m.

The series is co-sponsored by Jamestown Audubon and the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy and focuses on ways each resident can improve the health of Chautauqua Lake through landscaping choices.

Josh Cerra of Cornell University’s Landscape Architecture Department will give the presentation. Participants will take home designs for their own yards.

Fredonia History Days horse-drawn Trolley Tours tickets on sale

One of the biggest parts of Fredonia History Days are the horse-drawn trolley tours given both Friday and Saturday night with Town Historian Todd Langworthy.

Each year, the tour changes to give visitors a new route with new stories of Fredonia’s past. This year, there will be a number of the early homes on the tour, including information on Fredonia’s earliest settlers. The tour will also visit the Fredonia Normal School and hear about its tragic history, as well as its place in the history of local education. The tour will also feature some interesting information on the street names in the village and where many of them came from.

The tours take place each night at 7, 8, 9 and 10 p.m. and the cost is $10 per person. The tour lasts close to an hour and is full of information and fun while guided by Langworthy, in the character of Fredonia’s own Gettysburg hero, Captain Alonzo Cushing.

Tours sell out quickly, so it is best to purchase them ahead by visiting the Lady of the Lake located at 29 W. Main St. in Fredonia daily from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are also sold as space is available each evening at the information booth in Barker Common, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tours depart from the information booth on the hour with the trolley and horses from Cracker Jack Farms.

Rare World War I medal on display during Fredonia History Days

A medal awarded to returning veterans from World War I nearly 95 years ago will be returning home, giving area residents a rare chance to see a truly unique item.

The town of Pomfret awarded its returning veterans a special medal, honoring their service in Europe during the Great War. No local medals have been seen, but New York City resident Daniel Lyon and his family will be traveling to Fredonia for this year’s Fredonia History Days to be a part of a special ceremony to showcase the medal that was awarded in the fall of 1919.

Lyon has been in contact with Town Historian Todd Langworthy to learn more about the medal he owns and agreed to bring the medal to Fredonia for display during Fredonia History Days. The story of the medal will be told during a special ceremony on Saturday in the Gazebo at 1 p.m. during the intermission of the Fredtown Stompers Jazz performance. The medal will be part of a display after the ceremony in the local history tent in Barker Common until 6 p.m.

Summer reading program continues

The Mary E. Seymour Memorial Library will hold its summer reading program on Fridays through Aug. 15. The Stockton sessions will be held in coordination with the town recreation program, meeting at the park at 11:30 a.m. The Cassadaga Branch will welcome children at the library at 1 p.m. The theme for this year is “Fizz Boom Read” and stories, games, crafts and snacks will explore scientific concepts. Pre-K through 3rd-grade boys and girls are encouraged to come and join the fun.

The Summer Reading program will end with prizes, refreshments and a special concert by Nan Hoffman.

Annual Cruise Around the Lake Saturday

The Southern Tier Classic Chevy Club will again be hosting its annual “Cruise Around the Lake” this Saturday.

The cruise-in begins at 4 p.m. at Wing City Grill on Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood and will be formed up to leave at 6:30 sharp.

Thought by some to be this county’s longest parade-style event, it has had more than 100 classic, antique and special interest cars, trucks and motorcycles, and is often 2 miles long.

This rain or shine event is open to anyone wishing to travel the route and will end at the 50’s Grill and Diner on Washington Street in Jamestown.

Sunset Bay Fire Department Auxiliary Sunday

The Sunset Bay Fire Auxiliary held its first breakfast of the season on Father’s Day. Over 160 were served. The auxiliary wishes to thank the community for its support in these events. Dennison Road in Hanover closed

Dennison Road (County Route 89) in the town if Hanover, between Forestville-Silver Creek Road (County Route 85) and Overhiser Road is closed to all traffic due to highway repairs. A detour has been posted over Bennett State Road (County Route 85) and Stebbins Road (County Route 86). This closure will remain in effect until the detour signs are removed.

DHS Class of 1984 walk

The DHS Class of 1984 is asking classmates, families, friends, teachers and alumni to join them in a 3-mile walk starting and ending at the front entrance of Dunkirk High School on July 12 at 10:30 a.m. The $5 donation will go toward the purchase of a tree to be dedicated at noon (following the walk) in memory of deceased members of the class of ’84. to get permits before construction

Portland Town Zoning/-Code Enforcement Officer Signe Rominger would like to inform all owners of real property in the town of Portland that before they start any construction and/or alterations on their property or change the use of their property, they must secure a building/zoning permit from the zoning officer.

The property owner is responsible for obtaining the permit, even if the contractor is scheduled to do the work.

Please note that installation or reinstatement of all solid fuel burning appliances and associated chimney and flues requires a permit.

Failure to secure a building/zoning permit prior to commencement of the work may result in legal action being taken to stop the project, to remove any structure and/or a fine.

Remember, the permits are required in order to protect the interests of all property owners in the town of Portland.

‘Cars’ playing Monday at Russell Joy Park

The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will hold its first Community Movie Night of the summer Monday at Russell Joy Park.

“Cars” will be shown on the recreation department’s inflatable movie screen in the outfield of the Russell Joy Park baseball field beginning at dusk. People are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for their comfort.

The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department would like to recognize the Fredonia Beaver Club, whose generous donation made it possible to purchase the equipment used for this community event.

Villenova Burial Association meeting scheduled for July 15

The Villenova Burial Association meeting scheduled for July 15 at 7 p. m. will be held at the Villenova Town Hall on Butcher Road. Please note the change of location.

Harbor Cruise-In Sunday at Point Gratiot

A Harbor Cruise-In will be held Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk. All cars are welcome: hot rods, race cars, trucks, antiques and classics. Music will be provided by the Untouchables and D.J. Gould. Food, drinks and restrooms are available.

The event will include a chicken barbecue by Mike Porpiglia, vendors, a 50/50 raffle and door prizes all day. Donations will benefit Hailey’s Honeys for the Arthritis Foundation and the Chautauqua County Veterans Endowment.

Land Bank meeting July 9 in Jamestown

The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development will hold a regular meeting of the Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the CCIDA Board Room, 200 Harrison St., Jamestown. This meeting of the CCLBC is being conducted to discuss business associated with the potential sale of a property currently owned by CCLBC and other official business as required (agenda will be provided at the meeting). The press, public and other stakeholders are invited to attend.

Persia road closing Monday for repair

Broadway Road (County Route 4) will be closed in the town of Persia starting Monday. The road is being closed by the Cattaraugus County Department of Pub-lic Works for the replacement of three culverts damaged by a recent flood. It is estimated the road will be closed for approximately two weeks and a detour will be posted during the construction repairs.

Free lunches start Monday at Forestville Elementary School

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about keeping children healthy while school is out. Forestville Elementary School provides free lunches to all children 18 or younger during the summer. This is an open site so children do not have to be students from the district.

This summer, meals will be served at the Forestville Elementary School cafeteria, Monday through Fridays beginning Monday and ending on Aug. 15. Lunches will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. In addition, a snack will be available at 3:30 p.m.

Fredonia BOE meeting to have second

location in Colorado

The next Fredonia Board of Education meeting will have two locations for its proceedings.

Not only will the Tuesday meeting be held in the high school library, but one board member will be present through the video conferencing computer program Skype. The board member will be located at the Rocky Ridge Music Center, 465 Longs Peak Road, Estes Park, Colo.

This is being announced for the purpose of satisfying requirements of the Open Meetings Law.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. for the purposes of reorganization, with the regular meeting to follow.

Seymour Memorial Library summer reading program starts July 11

The Mary E. Seymour Memorial Library will hold its summer reading program on Fridays from July 11 through Aug. 15. The Stockton sessions will be held in coordination with the town recreation program, meeting at the park at 11:30 a.m. The Cassadaga Branch will welcome children at the library at 1 p.m. The theme for this year is “Fizz Boom Read” and stories, games, crafts and snacks will explore scientific concepts. Pre-K through third-grade boys and girls are encouraged to come and join the fun.

The Summer Reading program will end with prizes, refreshments and a special concert by Nan Hoffman.

COI to host health and wellness fair July 8

Making the right choices is a vital component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes you’re not aware of all the services available to help you make those choices. Chautauqua Opportunities understands the importance of making strides toward creating a healthy lifestyle. That’s why it is hosting two health and wellness fairs during July. The first fair will be held July 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 10825 Bennett Road in Dunkirk, and the second will be held July 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holy Family Center at 1135 N. Main St. in Jamestown.

The focus of the fair will be centered on health and safety education, providing valuable resources, and promoting healthy living through making the right choices. There will be door prizes, free samples and free healthy snacks for those who attend. The event is free and open to the public.

Women’s One Stop Screening Clinic at Brooks Hospital July 9

There will be a North County Women’s One Stop Screening Clinic at Brooks Memorial Hospital July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clinic is for women ages 40 and up, who are in need of breast and cervical cancer screenings. If the cost of the screening is a barrier, Cancer Services Program is able to help women with no insurance or a high deductible. Karen and Roy Harvey to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

Chautauqua Sunrise debuts Saturday with Karen and Roy Harvey as the guests. The Harveys will discuss “filming the issues.” The new program is hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. Chautauqua Sunrise replaces Senior Report, which ran in this time slot for 19 years. The guest is subject to change.

Chautauqua Sunrise is shown live Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forest-ville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek, the program is on Channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in May-ville. All swimming activities through the Fredonia-Pom-fret Recreation Depart-ment’s programming are canceled this week. There is an apparent maintenance problem with the Fredonia High School pool that is taking longer than first expected to fix.

Committee for 60th reunion of Fredonia High holds final meeting

The committee for the 60th reunion of Fredonia High School held its final meeting recently at the home of Carl Privateer. On July 11, class members will meet at the home of Russell Joy for a picnic featuring Carl’s Italian sausage from a secret family recipe. DFD June run report

The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 163 runs in June, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 138 emergency medical service runs resulting in 45 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 16 still alarms, six box alarms and three mutual aid calls.

DHS graduation rebroadcast today

The Dunkirk High School graduation ceremony will be rebroadcast today and Thursday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Cable Access Station 12, which is Channel 12 for people with a Time Warner digital set top box or Channel 98-3 for cable customers without a set top box. The Walter Rutland Show will air today live at 4:30 p.m. on Cable Access Station 12.

Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 1 cent per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.82/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.68/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 17.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 2.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 3.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 17.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Laura Damon to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Laura Damon will be interviewed on the next episode of Chautauqua People. The program will air at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing July 11.

Damon is the Convener of North Lake Informed Cit-izens and serves as a member of the Executive Com-mittee of Chautauqua Prop-erty Owners Association. She regularly attends board meetings of local governmental agencies and has made numerous inputs to governmental actions leading to greater efficiencies while saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

Damon was born and raised in Buffalo. She graduated from Smith College, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, and re-ceived a master of arts in teaching from Yale Univer-sity. She has taught English at the University of Georgia and Niagara University. Upon retirement from Nia-gara Community College in 1998, she relocated to Chautauqua.

She will be interviewed by John Viehe, producer of Chautauqua People.

Mayville’s July 4th parade will be televised live on Friday for many cable viewers in the area. Coverage begins at about 10 a.m., weather permitting.

Rebroadcasts are scheduled for July 5-11 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.
